  • Learning how to use PREPOSITIONS in Portuguese may seem a bit challenging, but it is a matter of practice. In today's lesson, you will learn about one of the most used prepositions in Portuguese - 'POR'. You will also see the mandatory contractions it makes with the Definite Articles (when 'POR' becomes 'PELO', 'PELA', 'PELOS', and 'PELAS)'.
    It is highly recommended that you rewatch the lessons on Genders and the use of Definite Articles in Portuguese.
    Enjoy!

    I thought "even" was "mesmo" in portuguese? Could i say "pelo contrário, ele mesmo gostou dos planos"? Would that work too?
    Obrigado pelos seus videos. Eles me ajudaram muito :)

    • @PlainPortuguese
      @PlainPortuguese  Před 2 lety +2

      Olá! Fico feliz em saber que os vídeos te ajudam! 😊
      Well, among other meanings, 'even' is equivalent to 'até mesmo' in Portuguese.
      'Até mesmo' may be shortened to 'até' and also 'mesmo'.
      For example, 'Their house is always warm, even in winter.'
      1. 'A casa deles é quentinha até mesmo no inverno.'
      2. 'A casa deles é quentinha até no inverno.'
      3. 'A casa deles é quentinha mesmo no inverno.'
      'Mesmo(a/s)' is also used to emphasize that you did something yourself.
      For example, 'He cleaned the kitchen himself.'
      1. Ele mesmo limpou a cozinha.
      Thus, in the example you gave me 'Ele mesmo gostou dos planos', it sounds like you are emphasizing that he himself liked the plans. In this case, you'd better use 'até mesmo' or 'até'.
      I guess you will find the examples available on the link below useful. 😎

      Oi Uriel! Você pode usar 'por' antes de nomes de pessoas conhecidas e pronomes - 'dirigido por Walter Salles', 'escrito por Paulo Coelho', 'traduzido por mim'. 😎.
      Use 'pelo', 'pela', 'pelos', 'pelas' nos outros casos - 'dirigido pelo André (meu amigo)', 'escrito pela professora de português', 'traduzido pelos alunos'.

    Eu sempre achei que 'pelo jeito' significou 'by the way' em inglês. Eu tava tentando descobrir se 'by the way / apparently' são intercambiáveis, mas em quase todas situações eles não são. O humor e o intento são muitos diferentes oa usar os dois (pelo menos em inglês). Pode esclarecer isso?
    By the way, The kids ate the ice cream. ("By the way" is used to express a fact that the listener might or might not have known. The listener usually replies by saying "OK" because this fact is not much of a surprise)
    Apparently the kids ate all the ice cream.
    (Apparently generally is used to express a shocking or surprising fact. The listener usually replies with "Whaaaaat?" or "Woooow, are you serious?" This is because the fact was surprising, but also unexpected.)

    • @PlainPortuguese
      @PlainPortuguese  Před 2 lety +1

      Oi, Deangelo! Tudo bem?
      'Pelo jeito' pode significar 'by the way' mas não no sentido que você imaginava. Por exemplo, na frase 'You could tell he was in love by the way he looked at her' podemos usar 'pelo jeito' - 'Você poderia dizer que ele estava apaixonado pelo jeito que ele olhava para ela.'
      'Pelo jeito' também pode ser usado no sentido de 'by the looks of it', 'it seems that'. Por exemplo, 'By the looks of it, she's achieved her goal' - 'Pelo jeito, ela atingiu seus objetivos.' / 'It seems that it is going to rain.' - 'Pelo jeito, vai chover.' Nesse caso, tem a ideia de 'apparently' 'Apparently they ate all the ice cream' - 'Pelo jeito, elas tomaram todo o sorvete.'
      A frase 'By the way' poderia ser traduzida por 'a propósito' - 'By the way, my name is Beatrice.' - 'A propósito, meu nome é Beatrice. / 'By the way, the kids ate ice cream' - 'A propósito, as crianças tomaram sorvete.'
