The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad operates a variety of excursions daily throughout the main operating season, including trips pulled by steam and diesel. One of the popular excursions is the Cascade Canyon Express, which is pulled by one of Durango & Silverton’s K-Class Mikados between Durango and Cascade Canyon along the Animas River. This shorter excursion offers the same excitement of the Durango & Silverton, but on a shorter schedule so that families can enjoy the other attractions that Durango has to offer in the same day. Pulling today’s Cascade Canyon Express is ex-Denver, Rio Grande & Western K-28 Class 2-8-2 “Mikado” #476 built in 1923 by the American Locomotive Company.
