    the 2017 Power Rangers movie was one of the most exciting things for any fan of the franchise. but, that excitement would turn into a great sadness and the movie was roasted by critics, and forgotten by the general audience, favoring seeing a Disney movie or a new MCU film. however, five years after the movie bombed in the box office, what can we learn from it's failure, and talk about if the movie really isn't as bad as critics may say. does this movie deserve a second chance? is it underrated?

    The cast was fine but I will die on this hill and say that they should’ve been an original team from the get go. New characters, new villain, new Zords, new everything. The 2017 movie needed a “Jurassic World” reset. It was already 20 years after the Turbo movie so they could’ve set the world cinematically off of that and build upon it.

    the worst part is that they used their powers only before they morphed, after they morphed they barely used their powers apart from leaving the ship which defeats the whole reason for morphing in the first place. the other problem is that they only morph towards the end of the movie and there was not enough action in it apart from the end

Otherwise you'd have to question far to many key pillars of the show and, it collapses like this movie does.

  • @flair541
    @flair541 Před 2 lety +5

    Ultimately I think it's biggest problem isn't poor marketing or questionable toys. It's that it's a generic superhero film with power ranger trappings and window dressing. Rita looks like a Marvel villain, Goldar is a giant mute as opposed to a giant beast with skill and battle wit that actually puts the rangers on their toes. The putties have the most potential as a redesign but nothing is done with it (a separate rant) and the rangers themselves look like Warframes and Ironman suits hate banged new life into their Galactibeast-forsaken universe.
    Going back to the rangers: There's a single line that sort of implies the powers gravitated toward each ranger individually but when the powers have virtually nothing to differentiate them, it means nothing. In the original show Zordon explained what all their powers were and why the individual rangers got what they got in specific. Hell, Dulcea does that in the '95 movie. He continues this trend when they get their weapons or new whatevers half the time.
    This movie just gives the ranger characters the colors their old versions had because.... Because. Why does Jason have a sword but no one else has any kind of personal weapon? No idea. Why is all the action against CGI abominations instead of costumed people? IDK.
    Rather than make a new kind of Power Rangers, they made Power Rangers more a more generic capeflick, which made it blend into an already growing inundation of such films. And that is the core of the problem.
    I do like the film. It's very good. But that is an aspect worth talking about. Rather than lean into tokusatsu, the IP's roots, it rejected them for... What reason? Mass appeal? It probably would have appealed more if was less generic.

    I absolutely loved this movie. They did what marvel movies did back 15 years ago. They gave a true orgin story. Now they know audiences want things to move along fast. They don't want to watch an hour of them getting their powers they just want it to start with action. But that's what the sequel could have been.

    • @joshuareynolds23
      @joshuareynolds23 Před rokem +4

      It should have never been an origin story to begin with. That was a terrible idea because the whole point of the power rangers is that they are paragons of virtue who always stand up for what's right. We need more time building up the story of them taking up the power and, using it rather than a high school drama. The movie was completely devoid of the soul of power rangers akin to the fantastic four movies. They just miss the mark because they don't understand the medium.

      @@mightymorphinconspiracythe5024 I'd say its more that a very small subsection of fans want power rangers to be more adult. But, they don't mean they want it to get the dark knight treatment. They mean they want them to deal with adult themes and, discuss the fall out of being a child soldier. But, you still have to understand the themes of the thing you are adapting. Turning it into a highschool drama first and, foremost completely misses the point. That's why the original cast is so well respected they were paragons of virtue so it makes sense that they were the ones chosen.

    This Power Rangers movie feels like it is embarrassed to be based on Power Rangers. I get the desire to make Power Rangers more mature and gritty (even if that goes against the source material) but MCU films appeal to every age demo without this insistence on what counts as mature and non-cheesy. It doesn’t adapt the show it is based on. The Power Rangers 1995 movie is still a proper big screen adaptation of the Power Rangers TV show. A modern PR movie should be more like Bumblebee.

  • @benjamingomez1761
    @benjamingomez1761 Před 2 lety +9

    The problem with the movie I think is that I felt sometimes that it was kind of apologetic of being something out of PR franchise, like show me some suits, mindblowing fantastic action, colors, a Megazord that looks like a mecha and that looks like the original (have we no learned anything from Bayformers?), I mean look at Cobra Kai, that series is like an 80s movie, then feels like a parody, to then feel grounded due to the script, and its a Success, everyone would have laughed if someone told them that of all the 80s and 90s franchises that are getting remade/rebooted, (Ik its now a reboot), Karate Kid would be the succesful one, I dont have a problem with the cast or their characters though, but it really felt overly edgy sometimes, instead of being light and fun, with a ton of heart and love for the franchise they are adapting, PR has an amazing potencial with the amount of Sci Fi/Superhero content that is on demand rn, and no franchise has the team, colorful, giant machines that combine into a more giant robot, wacky carismatic villain aspect like PR

The American version released in 1993 is the 16th season of the original Japanese show called Super Sentai. When Saban released it, he used the original footage mixed with new footage filmed in the US. Saban would not have Power Rangers without Japan, just as Henry Ford would not have Ford Motors without Mercedes.

    I feel like this movie is an excellent example of the sum of its parts being greater than the whole. There were a lot of really good ideas and concepts in it, and the acting was reasonably solid (with one exception), but it needed a much stronger cohesive narrative and a better balance of action vs. character development.
    Billy was my favorite character in the movie, with Trini being a close second. I loved Billy because he just came off as such an incredible role model, and the most likely to be chosen a true hero. Trini was the most relatable to me on a personal level, as I know what it feels like to be misunderstood by your seemingly "normal" family.
    Unfortunately, Rita was the worst part of the entire movie. I liked the idea of her being the former green ranger, but Elizabeth Bank's performance was just AWFUL. It honestly came off as her not knowing whether she was supposed to take the material seriously or not. On the one hand, you've got an incredibly tense scene where she confronts Trini at her house, but then you juxtapose it with a scene of her sitting down to eat a donut. Banks is over here going "is this movie a parody, or not?" So you get this tonal dissonance in her acting, almost like she wasn't chewing the scenery enough.

    I believe whole heartily that a MAJOR reason for this movie's flopping was taking inspiration from Michael Bay's Transformers design. Bumblebee PROVED that making the Transformers as "simply" designed as the OG 80's cartoon was NOT inherently a bad thing. That Cybertron Scene in the Beginning Of Bumblebee was enough to make fans almost cream themselves on the spot. The over-complicated thousands of moving mechanical parts was just TOO much. Often you didn't even KNOW a certain Transformer was IN the movie without either Captions for their name or by sitting through the credits. I mean who could guess that the little hyper-active freak thing was Frenzy? A mini Decepticon that should have come out of Soundwave BTW.
    Using that style of Robotics was a bad decision. As was making the Zords LOOK Alien. I get that Zordon actually IS an alien, but you'd think that being on Earth and making Giant Robots resemble dinosaurs the idea in order to NOT draw attention to oneself that said Robot dinosaurs WOULD blend in. The fact that they actually LOOK like Yeagers is disgusting. Most importantly, aside from Billy, NONE of the characters have anything resembling personalities. They're all just stereotypes. And they aren't really all that decent people. Well okay maybe it's just Jason and Kimberly that are shitty people. Zack is taking care of a sick mother and Trini deals with a homophobic family who think she's on drugs. But essentially the movie lacks any kind of soul.

    I'm pretty much in agreement with you. I liked the 2017 movie, but it had it's problems. Also, one of the biggest missed opportunities was not inviting Paul Schrier (the actor who played Bulk in the show) to cameo as Ernie at Krispy Kreme. Also, do you have any plans on doing a video on the board game "Power Rangers: Heroes of the Grid?" I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

    I feel like 100% American made takes on tokusatsu and anime IP's (like Anerican reboots of British sitcoms) are hit-or-miss, and the producers can't figure out what the heck went wrong.

    There was a lot and I think you covered it well, though like you I still really enjoy the film, and bummed that we haven't gotten more. (I'm still iffy on the rumors with the next film and am like..."is this..gonna be a fanservice fest?").
    While I get the..disappointedness with the helmets open during the zord scenes, i kinda appreciated why they did that? Notably that we would still be able to see their reactions and emotions better than with the helmets on during those sequences.
    It's tough for me, because some of complaints I had waded through before felt very..."this adaptation didn't do xyz exactly like how it feels in my favorite thing"..as if it needs to be exactly the same. I've seen it with Marvel films as well, and other stuff where it feels like a change is criticized because..it was a change regardless of it's place in the story. The one Peter Parker in Into the Spider-verse still bugs me, but I'd be remiss to say that it doesn't work for the story they told. It's something I need to be careful of, because generalizations like that are not good things to do and there are valid points on some of those things.

    Whenever I tell people at work who bring doughnuts "the source all all life is buried there", I get blank looks.
    No proper Megazord transformation sequence? The only part they really needed for the first PR team was a Megazord that takes forever to stand up. It delivered that, at least. In between the good campy moments, it was a filler movie. ("Once and Always" was much, much better, even for being not at all being fun and games. Just short of camp, there's heroic fantasy, and that part was there. Not in the 2017 movie.)

    Being a fan of power rangers since MMPR came out in 93, this movie was not good. It dragged out for too long and it took an hour or more into the movie for them to be in their suits. The CGI for the Zords were poor considering the CGI in 1995 was hilariously bad

    I gotta say I definitely did enjoy it. Not just as a PR fan but as a movie lover. Seen it 3 times in theaters lol. Marketing definitely screwed with future films and the release date was just terrible. Beauty and the Beast, Guardians of the Galaxy, Kong Skull Island, and Logan. Of course people wouldnt see Power Rangers when those were out. But aside from that it was still a great film. Yes the flaws are there. Yes the best parts were saved for the last act, but I respect the fact this film was meant to be an origin and I like the mature approach while keeping it silly still. I'm sure the second film if they made it would of felt more like Power Rangers and included more action and suit time. The suits and Zord designs looked fine to me aside from the Mastadon design. The helmets needed to look more like the dinos tho. Sad we wont get the sequel I'm very curious how it would of played out. And Billy was forsure the best one. I'll always cherish this film as a PR fan.

    Billy was the heart and soul of the film which is fitting because he was in the show too. The cast was good. the product placement was awful. The tone was confusing but I got what the goal was. I would like to see the universe continue in comics because it really had a unique and good set up in its world building.
    The suits were meh the zords meh and Goldar was terrible. These things could all be fixed in a comic or sequel though.

    In my opinion, this movie tried way too hard to be realistic. Power Rangers will always have silly elements to it. It's an inevitably. When this film came out, I looked at those designs and I hated it. Power Rangers shouldn't come across as muted. It should be brighter with more humor. Seasons like In Space, RPM, and Time Force balanced being serious and funny without making everything dark, gray, and ugly. I think it was a mistake to reuse the characters from MMPR. I can't look at these characters and not picture MMPR. If I hear the name Zach, my mind instantly goes to Walter Jones. When I hear Billy, my mind goes to David Yost. When I picture Rita Repulsa, I picture a witch from space who's wardrobe would make Queen Amidala blush. Power Rangers should be over the top.

    While I not seen the film but from the sounds of it, the attempt to setup a cinematic universe with the first film was a part of its undoing, plus trying to make it more adult like, besides, I don't think the suit desgins and the zords were really helpful in getting attention, I would say the Megazord is one of the ulgiest desgins ever and I really think they should of gone with something more akin to how Power Rangers started off with, it would of likely gotten a bit more attention, of course, where they released it wasn't going to help as it was going up against a Marvel movie when Marvel was riding high!

I think another reason why i think it failed was cause a lot of adults were think it was just going to be a cheesy b movie like the first season of MMPR and were kind of thrown off by a more serious take on the show like the seasons that followed mmpr. These movie felt more like Day of the Dumpster than anything so i could forgive the lack of action for the most part but i do wish each ranger had a unique weapon rather than just a sword. Well, the movie had the potential to be a A-list. But two things stand out which were the cause of its flop
    1. There was too much emphasis on the rangers character development as normal people and not focusing on the action properly.
    2. There wasn't a proper morphing sequence which was a big mistake. But the biggest mistake was the lack of zord to megazord transformation. If that was done properly like any power rangers franchise, it could have had higher marks. All in all, the idea and concept was excellent. But the execution was bluntly terrible.

    I watched it in theaters opening weekend. I didn't like how Billy ruined one of the only 2 good parts of the movie. When they took took off in the Zords. Just to follow it up with some rap trash for the fight. Personaly they should have used the Go Go Power Rangers theme, as the Rangers were walking out of Zordon's ship fully Morphed. It was awesome to see that JDF had grown his hair out for his and Amy Jo Johnson's cameo. Too bad they couldn't/wouldn't get more of the OG Rangers to cameo. Sure I own it on DVD. Just to have it to complete the collection of Power Rangers movies.

    In China, It looked like Shady marketing practices. In Japan, All I see is confusion because Barely anyone in Japan knows what Power Rangers are. Not to mention having someone new to being a director at the time….well…That is also a flop as not only the toys felt cheap, but the Staff was as well.
    Did I enjoy it? Yeah, to some extent. As a Story-writer…I feel that it could’ve been written better to feel somewhat connected to the Main Universe, but My story in comparison feels much smoother then that train wreck movie.

    While I do think the movie has a few flaws, I thought it was still great. While my friends and family think the show is a bit stupid, I showed them this movie and they loved it. I wish the sequels weren’t canceled. We could’ve seen Dylan O’Brien, Booboo Stewart or also Howard as Tommy Oliver. I’m pretty sure the final movie would’ve adapted Countdown to Destruction and with that, it would’ve felt similar to Infinity War. I hope that the next movie successfully goes down that route because this movie had great potential.
