  • Power Rangers is a very successful and popular entertainment franchise dating back to the mid-90s. Spanning many seasons of television, millions of toys sold, and a very passionate fanbase; it's no surprise Power Rangers have had a handful of movies in their time. But one of the most interesting is the most recent. Power Rangers (2017) was an attempt to start a cinematic universe for the Rangers but ultimately failed. Why is this and was the movie any good? Find out in this video today!
    Power Rangers is a 2017 American superhero film based on the franchise of the same name, directed by Dean Israelite and written by John Gatins. It is the third installment in the Power Rangers film series and is a reboot that loosely adapts the show's pilot episode. The film features the main characters of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers television series with a new cast, starring Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin, and David Denman, featuring Bill Hader, with Bryan Cranston, and Elizabeth Banks.

    Dude - Rita being the former Green Ranger perfectly explained why the hell the original '93 Rita just happened to have the green power coin in the first place. That never made sense to me as a kid, but this film completely rectified it with that connection.

  • @Tarikkb
    @Tarikkb Před 2 lety +171

    This movie was actually a stable starter for a potential franchise , it had everything for a realistic power rangers movie , it’s depiction of random teens finding the coins was great ,it was dark enough to be enjoyable , it was really cinematic , especially the world building at the beginning was really on point , it was intriguing and could create future storylines , it was a nice blend of old school and new school , it had almost everything to build a franchise creatively , wish it would continue , a lot of the things people complained about were things that could’ve been fixed with future movies , this was supposed to be the introduction, people hated on it just because “we don’t want another dark teenage angst movie “ but tbh it kinda fit this story

      Oh yeah, and I grew up with the original Rangers, into I think it was 5 iterations before I stopped watching. I liked this one way more than the one from the 90's with the purple dude. It made more sense to me and I really wish they would continue the franchise with this cast.

    The main reason why they made Rita the Green Ranger was because in the show, they never explained how she got the Dragonzord coin. So this movie was to explore that mythology.

    I honestly enjoyed this movie. Yes, the action fighting scenes could’ve been more, but what does it for me is that it’s character driven and the development each of the rangers go through. At least the 2017 film tried to go in a different direction with a darker tone. Yes, it’s not a great movie but it definitely doesn’t deserve the hate it gets back then. I think this movie is misunderstood by many people. My favorite character out of all the rangers is actually Billy.

      @CuffAnimationStudios Před 2 lety +7

      i think most the hate is on the visuals used. what's up with the spider mastodon? you need to make iconic characters recognizable like Goldar. there are clear weaknesses in the story with the biggest is the pit simulation being the team building exercise. maybe they should have set it up saying that had to retrieve the power weapons that got lost in the battle in the prehistoric past.

  • @Dervis128
    @Dervis128 Před 2 lety +13

    I've been a lifelong Power Rangers fan, but this movie was so divisive in the fandom. Its like they were trying so hard to make a "dark and gritty" movie that they forgot to make a Power Rangers movie. My biggest issue is that they failed the characters in almost every way. We barely know anything about them by the end of the movie. We know their problems, but we don't know them as characters. Most of their problems aren't even resolved...they're just a back drop. You could have renamed them "Daddy Issues," "Mean Girl," "Sick Mom," "Maybe Gay," and "Socially Awkward" and saved us so much time. They also barely mentioned the zords, and the suits were awful to look at. They really got nothing right about the Power Rangers in this reboot.

  • @TheJokesterSCR
    @TheJokesterSCR Před 2 lety +47

    It's kind of a double edge sword. On one hand we definitely could have used more of the Power Rangers. On the other hand, if they got into it too quickly then people would have complained that we didn't get enough character development and that it felt too rushed, etc. It's tricky to find the right balance in a movie like this.

    It looks like they wanted to go for a "well meaning misfits" band together and become heroes angle, but maybe focused too much on the misfits part.
    It might have been better if they found the morphers early on but had not met Zordon yet, so they want to protect the city but don't really have any guidance. You could have Rita trying to tempt them to join her. They might consider it for a bit given the bad experiences they've had in the past, but decide they don't want to be like her and band together to fight her back. They could even start setting up Tommy by having him be isolated from others which makes it easier for Rita to convince him to join her. That would make a good cliff hanger for the sequel. Just some random brainstorming.

    Say what you will about the original Power Ranger movie, it had theme's and ideas, it committed all the way to them, it just wasn't very good for the most part. The problem with this movie was that it got too crowded, wasn't good at conveying its themes and ideas, but on top of that, it felt like it was too embarrassed to embrace the campiness from it's source material. Because of this, we get a film that's not only confused, but also bland, forgettable, and, at times, pretty boring. Does that make it one of the worst movies ever made? No. Honestly, I wouldn't even call it one of the worst superhero movies ever made. It has some cool action and good acting, but you always know where its loyalty lies: to franchise it. You can franchise a series fine, but you have to be committed to a good story and ideas first. And those simply aren't in this one. It's too bad. I really like the 2017 Power Ranger cast and would like to have seen where this series would have gone if they had gotten more competent writers behind it, as well as a studio that focused more on getting one film right instead of the next five. So... (sighs) despite it giving some good scenes, Power Rangers (2017) just wasn't very morphinominal. Let's just hope Hasbro can do a better job with this franchise

I believe the Director send her back story was revealed then she be completely unlikable. They really should’ve tried to establish a friendship with her and Trini. In a scene that was in the trailer but was deleted, Trini is shown in front of her locker that has hurtful words on it. It’s sad but Kimberly quickly tries to cheer her up. It’s a simple thing but it establishes much more character development. This movie has a lot of deleted scenes that should’ve been kept. Everyone will have their opinions on this film, but here is my take: I genuinely enjoyed and loved the film. Yes it has its flaws and things could of been much better but I definitely had a great time and wished we could of got the sequel. Toy sales definitely could of been better, and the box office flop was majorly due to bad release timing. During the month of March in 2017, Kong Skull island, Beauty and the beast, and Logan were all out before the release. And overseas Fast and furious 8. So forsure people saw those movies before wanting to see Power rangers. And I'm sure die hard fans were the first ones in theatres. From a movie standpoint it's a pretty great film, from a Power Ranger standpoint it was good but could of been better. The cast was great, Rita was awesome. And the acting was fantastic. Nice too how they made it so young people could connect to the rangers and gave them real life teen issues and identities. The idea they went with for making this an origins film I see it and it makes sense why the rangers didnt get their powers till the third act. It's more realistic especially since in reality I'm sure teenagers getting power like that wont get ahold of it right away. Especially being strangers and not knowing how to work as a team. What would of been better is the rangers getting their armor after meeting Zordon and we seem them training and trying to get used to the powers and working as a team. Definitely would of pleased the fans more seeing more of the suits. Even the fight with rita would.of been better of she made putties and we get a morphing sequence to see how the rangers adjust in real battle and teamwork. Longer battles definitely would of been better too, they felt so short especially the megazord battle, but they still were entertaining and well choreographed. Little details would of been great such as the communicator, the rangers teleporting instead of walking all the way to the command center, Zach doing hip hop Kiddo since that's part of his character in the show. And a explanation as to how they know Martial arts whereas in the graphic novel it says both Jason and Trini knows martial arts. Things that definitely would of pleased fans forsure would of been an entire morphing time sequence and legit morphers they use. As well as all rangers having their weapons and not just jason. The suits designs were great imo, but the helmets definitely should of resembled their dinosaur more. It would of been nice too having Zordon explain each of their colors and dinos too instead of just knowing they are a specific color. The zords didnt all look so bad minus the mastodon. I get they went for alien looks but they still could of made it resembling a mastadon better. And the megazord could of honestly looked better and more ideal to the OG. We definitely could of gotten more ideas of what the zords can do and how they differ ability wise. Even the putties seemed cool too without the goofy aspect. And golder definitely deserved a redesign. They could of done the whole blue faced ape look. But end of the day it is what it is sadly, I still wish for a sequel. Bringing in Tommy was definitely a interest. Guess we shall see what's coming next.

    Honestly I’d hire you to make a Power Rangers movie but with a couple catches.
    1. I’d want to work with you on the script of the story.
    2. I’d be giving only $75M dollars for the production budget so I can save up another $75M for marketing
    3. You would have to do it the Christopher Nolan Style, meaning No CGI.
    And I’d give you from May 9th, 2025 to September 7th, 2025 to film and the rest of September all the way up to November 14th, for reshoots.
    And the film would have to come out on this release date:
    June 4th, 2026.

    I liked it fine but the biggest problem I had with the 2017 movie was they Rangers didn’t morph until the last 15 minutes. It made the same mistake as the Turbo movie. When they reboot it again, they should build up to the Shattered Grid story, make Lord Drakken the Thanos of that franchise.

    I only watched the full movie once and while its nowhere near great it's still watchable and that's more than i can say for the Power Rangers movie on Netflix. Knowing this franchise was supposed to have a total of atleast 7 movies and this one mainly focused on Jason, I always thought the second would focus on Kimberly, the third would focus on Billy, the fourth on Trini, the fifth on Zack, the sixth on Tommy, and the last one on theme defeating Rita Repulsa once and for all.

    They spent so much time trying to get the power rangers to simply morph into the suits. Whyyy? They were already chosen.
    The focus of the movie should have been how to work as a team while actually in the power ranger suits. First major battle should have been them losing because they weren't working as a team and at the end of the movie now that they have "learned" to work as a team they win.
    Also don't get me started on the megazord. The design, while bad imo wasn't even the biggest issue it was the fact that the studio completely failed to show the megazord transform/combine. A huge omission. I get it Transformers had been out for 10 years at this point but the megazord was the final cap that sealed the fate of the movie.
    What we did get was all of the robots falling into a pit then a random grey mech emerges not resembling anything close to a megazord. Such a missed opportunity.

    I come from the opposite direction of you (Pop Screen) on this film in terms of childhood.
    I was a child mostly of the 80s (born in the late 70s, finished growing up in the 90s). I stuck with cartoons and children's entertainment longer than even most of my friends, and was willing to at least try to give Power Rangers and Pokemon a chance. Pokemon was okay, but I just could not tolerate Power Rangers.
    There was so much potential for deep storytelling and I just didn't see them trying to achieve it.
    The first thing that MUST NOT happen with a team story like this is for EVERYBODY on the team to ALWAYS agree. It just gets boring. If there's no conflict on the team, then there's no real excitement. We aren't watching the story of a team, but the story of one person with five different faces.
    I actually almost got into the comics when they first came out because there was actually some conflict on the team. It was something about one of them taking a risk to get a new power coin or something for Billy (former blue ranger) because he had lost his power at the time. Billy basically chewed the other ranger's ass out for risking the mission.
    Another thing that bothered me was the lack of parents. As I mentioned earlier, I was a comic book fan. (Still am, just don't have the time/money. Turns out full employment+responsibilities is less profitable than partial employment -responsibilities.) My absolute favorite character was Tim Drake AKA Robin III. (Actually, he's still my favorite character, but for nostalgia reasons if I'm being honest.)
    The thing about Tim in his own comics was that he actually had to deal with a parent. He wasn't an orphan like his mentors, Bruce (Batman) and Dick (Nightwing/Robin I). His mother was killed, but his father survived. His home life wasn't terrible, but it had its challenges. His father (Jack) survived the attack that killed his mother, but was left crippled. This meant Tim often had to take care of his dad, in addition to the responsibilities he'd taken on as Robin. Tim's disappearances and absences didn't go unnoticed when he constantly disappeared, stayed out late, etc. And when Jack found out what his son's "extracurricular activities" really were...
    The shit hit The Bat.
    The Rangers of the original series, however, didn't even seem to have parents.
    This also leads into my third problem with the series, though it wasn't really pointed out until a Power Rangers fan film.
    Needless to say, Jack was furious at the danger his son was put in. His 14-year old son was essentially going out at night and committing multiple crimes to fight hardened killers with nothing but a fancy suit, some throwing stars, and a stick.
    The Rangers had it even worse. There was a fan film several years back (before the 2017 film) where it was set several years after the rangers and somebody's killing the now adult rangers. It made the point that essentially they were child soldiers drafted into an intergalactic war they're not yet old enough to even understand.
    The movie managed to cover all of these points fairly well for its run time.
    The characters had their differences. They were friends, but they weren't all the same.
    Their parents were there, cared about them, and thus because of this became an obstacle to what they needed to do.
    We saw the first set of Rangers die at the beginning, establishing that what they do is dangerous.
    The movie wasn't great, but it was enjoyable. If the original series had been 1/4 as good about addressing these points, I'd have a few Rangers decorating my geek shelf now. I'd really like to have seen the film as a prime-time TV series instead of a film. The same themes and ideas, but better developed over time. It also would have left them time to show The Rangers actually learning to control their zords instead of suddenly knowing how to use them perfectly. (Which would have mad a great analogy to teenagers learning to drive.)
    Final note: I LOVED the krispy kreme thing and laughed my ass off. Best in-your-face-over-the-top-we-got-payed-bitches product placement since Darkened Skye.

    I'm not fussy. I actually liked it. I even liked the suit design (and I'm very critical when it comes to character design). My only input is that the combined Megazord could look more mechanized, rather than biomechanical humanoid thing (their individual Zord designs are fine). The enemy creature design could use some work too. Goldar as a molten gold, goo creature kinda underwhelming. Surely someone can draft a better design than that. But other than that, I liked it. The characters are likable enough too. They have their own drama but not too overwhelming. Something that can be explored if this was a series.

    As someone who lived through Power Rangers and Ninja Turtles at their heights, I wouldn't necessarily say that PR dethroned the Turtles. The Turtles had already cooled down significantly in 1994, which was PR's peak year. I'd say 1992 was probably the last huge year they had. They remained fairly popular until around 1996, when the cartoon ended, but not even close to those early heights.
    Great video btw. I skipped this movie. It looks like a valiant effort that just didn't quite deliver, which is more than a lot of other blockbuster films have done.... Looking at you Moonfall!!

    I actually liked this movie more than I ever did the original. Did not mind the wait to see them suit up. Rita was awesome and finally scary-ish as she should have always been. Honestly the only thing the original did better was the costumes. OG movie Ranger suits are still the gold standard.
