You are the man! Been looking into doing this and you made it 1000x easier
Glad to share some info and help out. Good luck with your project, God bless
Thank you for doing this video. I upgraded my IDI alternator following your steps. It was extremely helpful. Keep building Sh$@!!
Came over from a comment you left on an idi group from fb. U are a lifesaver. Saved me a couple hundred dollars plus a few hours of research.
Glad to help out. Most of the Facebook groups just push overpriced parts from a couple companies. I try to show people how to do things and save money in the process. Doesn't make me too popular in the groups!
@@worthshop How did you re wire the tach sensor?
@Randy Dye Just cut the plastic sheathing off the wire harness, and seperate the ones you no longer need from the 2 wire tach plug. Now take the tach plug and reconnect the 2 wires that goes to tach sensor.
My truck has the dash and everything stripped out of it for circle track racing so a bit more involved!
@@worthshop got it. Thank you.
You got one hell of a handle there. Thanks for the video my 76 e150 appreciates it
No problem 👍
Hey bud just bought a lean rust free 1986 super cab f250 4x4. 6.9 idi diesel 78,000 original miles garage kept original 1st owner. He died bought it for 4k even the ac works!!!
Nice find! Hope you enjoy it, and it treats you well. God bless.
@@worthshop thanks man
Love your stuff man, 6.9 IDI is hands down my favorite truck. Thanks for the content
Great content, very informative. Thank you! Screw the facebook haters my guy. Keep doing you, sharing information that helps folks.
Thanks appreciate that. Just frustrating to try sharing content to people I know can use it to be blocked censored and deleted by admins and moderators. But my content is growing despite them.
First off, i wanted to thank you for all the info you've put out on IDI's. Its really hard to find anything on these old trucks. Secondly, i have a question for you if you have the time. Ive recently bought a 91 f250 with the 7.3 N/A non-turbo. Its been an electrical mess. Its whats led me to your channel. My voltage regulator went out and fried quite a bit of the wiring. Im having a helluva time finding any info on how to electrical work on these trucks. Could you possibly recommend some literature or a channel on here that might be a le to help someone who isnt the most savvy in the electrical realm? Any info would be much appreciated. If not, no worries and keep on keeping on! I appreciate all the info you e already put out there!!
Its nice after watching you tube videos after you tube videos of guys doing the same thing as what they watched from you tube videos from you tube videos of this conversion complicated to be exact as the original complicated factory set up and then you hit it out of the park with simple right to the point Power. thank you.
No problem! Glad you found it helpful. I put alot of thought and effort into this video.
Good Informative video, i'll be referencing this soon again!
Thanks! Glad to share info and help people out.
Great info buddy! 👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for watching, hope it helps you with a future project.
The only alternator i could find was one from the 92 E350 7.3 powerstroke or the PG 7752 do you think either of these wpuld work? I checked for the pg7777 but they arent available on amazon
I have a 1986 6.9 idi with the ats turbo kit btw
On the stock truck what 2 hot cables do you run on the mega fuse ? Where do they go both ends
One runs from the charging post of alternator to the mega fuse, the other goes from the mega fuse to the post with battery cables on the starter solonoid mounted to the passenger side fender.
Anyone know why im getting 16v on my batteries when at 1700 or so rpm after doing this swap?
Hey man! I just got an alternator and it’s the wrong pulley, I need the two slotted one like you have, any ideas how to go about this? I have a 86 F-250 6.9 idi
Take the pulley off the 1g alternator you removed
So after a year how has the 3g alternator been so far
I did this swap yesterday, and it came online and started charging for like ten seconds and then it all stopped charging. I know the batteries in this truck are old and have sat so I probably need to replace them before chasing further rabbit holes.
Any advise for good places to add grounds? This truck is kind of a basket case when it comes to the electrical system, though it seems to be coming back up to speed the further I dig into it. Thanks for your videos! Learning a lot about these old tanks.
Did you blow the fuse? That or something came loose would be my guess. Need a good ground to the engine block and frame. Trucks usually come with one on each side.
Hay Aspie, Just courios if You can delete vacuum pump or do You have to keep it? Nice ALT swap! 🙏🏻👍
Vacuum pump needs to stay on the truck, it runs the power brakes, and also controlls transmission shift points since it is an auto transmission. Thanks for watching, hope you have a good week.
@@worthshop Kool! Got it. Thanks for the update. Have a great weekend!🙏🏻👍
Bought my 88 7.3 idi, looking to do this but the previous owner add a new key ignition and seemed to cut my green with red wire short, do you know where I could get a piece to extend it?
I would just cut the plastic wire loom on the wire harness back a little bit to get to it. Add a piece of green wire, which is readily available and easy to find. Wouldn't really worry about it having a red stripe. If you really want it to have a red stripe, I would rip some wire out of a vehicle at the junk yard. Good luck with your project, and God bless.
I used a circuit breaker instead of mega fuse
Good idea.
I bet these videos sure piss off the guys running the fb idi groups. They try to sell a kit for this swap at over $350 you show us how to do it at a fraction of that price tag.
As a matter of fact yes, classic diesel designs just kicked me out of the Facebook group they run for sharing information and helping people. I will do a post and show you screenshots.
Classic Diesel Designs just copied a bunch of other people's parts, they are probably just jealous cause your youtube is actually worth watching. They post dumb shit, and get hardly any views.
Dude how did you get the pulley on without it rubbing? Just put a lockwasher behind it against the bearing?
I have done this swap several times. Never needed a washer to space the pulley out.
@@worthshop 10 4 so I need to get a different pulley. I have the original alternator that the previous owner removed. I didn't think to check it. Thank you for the quick response man. Love your videos!
Mine is doing that to what did you do to resolve this issue ?
@@Neythan2021 I ordered a different pulley. He has the part number or a link in one of the comments.
Hey aspie can you please tell me a part number for the pulley on the alternator, I bought a truck but the alternator and pulley are gone and I’m having trouble finding the double pulley for my v belt 86 IDI
Here is a link to one I just found, not sure if that same part # interchanges. You might be able to find it elsewhere like ebay or Amazon.
www.robertsandson.com/belts-pulleys-tensioners/alternator-pulleys/rs-644-10141.html
Appreciate it, shipping on that thing is 24$ 🫠
Might compare the specs on this one. Free shipping, doesn't say it specifically fits the idi trucks but free shipping though.

I’ll just go with the first one, the second one you sent said it had a 7/8” bore while the first one that says it’s for the IDI has a17mm or .669 bore
One last question what size bolt is the bottom bolt that goes to the original alternator?
I can’t find the wire harness can you commit the link
Here is a link to the plugs, no wire harness needed. You will also need the 175 amp megafuse, and 4 Guage inverter wires with 5/16ths ends about 18 inches long.

@@worthshopthank you so much
Does the 3-g alternator have the W spot to run a tachometer wire?
I do not think it does. I have tried researching that option to add a tachometer to a idi. But have not been able to find a solid answer
@@worthshop darn, that was my plan as I'm really not trying to spend a huge amount of money just to install a tach
@@worthshop Do you lose the tach with the 3G swap if you dont add an aftermarket upgrade?
@anchormanronburgandy no tach wires were shown in the video. Remove them from the alternator harness and put them back in the truck. My truck has no dash, it is a race only truck is why I lost the tach.
That pulley was loose
Ya, I have never had one pop off so easily.
If you have a factory air and factory tach truck, you have more wires in the harness. Do not just cut them...
Pretty sure I showed that. I pulled my tach wiring out to reuse later.
@worthshop most people read the comments before the videos... I'm just putting that info in their heads...
@bigloads3600 Appreciate that, and hopefully the comment saves someone the bad day of cutting the wrong wires!
@@worthshop never know.... but it's worth a shot lol
