  • This week I took some time to give the newest truck a good interior detail and tuned up the old 7.3 idi.

    when you turn the key on a cold idi & the wait to start light comes on, its very important to push the fuel pedal down once or twice , before you start the engine,this puts the fuel pump on high idle & changes the timing.....

      @jamesdoublet4203 Před 2 měsíci

      I wait for a couple mins before high idling does just fine

    You can push the schrader valve on top of the fuel filter housing while you jump the starter solenoid to bleed the air out

    The 4x4 problem is just the truck's way of asking for a D60 swap.

    You said you timed it as best you could without a meter. I wish you'd shared that with us. I have a 94 turbo IDI but no one has ever discovered how to time them. Shure wish you would have shared it.

    Bought some new injectors for my 92 IDI from R&D about a year ago. Been running like a new engine since.

    The “power” buttons on your new seat are for air lumbar support, not moving the seat.

    Great video budd. I have a similar truck & have not had any luck getting it running yet. Not sure what all hoses & wires are missing.

    I pulled my carpet out cleaned the floor pans toe boards inner rockers. I put sound deadening Matt's and lizard skined the entire toe board and up the back steel pannel. Put the interior back and the carpet was so nasty. I took to a car wash and soap and pressure washed it. I then rented steam cleaner and it came out like new. Put it all back in its very notable quiet and it looks and smells so much better

      I did the kilmat in my highboy, sound deadening is 10/10 worthwhile!

      @@rmaksdirtroadderelicts something worth noting I did the hood that way. I took the hood removed the insulation mat I cut to factory shape and put mats on there. You wouldn't believe the difference! New bump stops on the hood works like a charm! I like my truck quiet as possible.

    To time right, use a turn buckle hooked to the alternator bracket .

    Love the information here, a total newbie to the early OBS IDI's. I have a 89 7.3 in a E350 17ft U-Haul that my dad overheated. Any advice in advance on what to check? Any recommendations on special tools to check compression and other items? I'd really appreciate any advice on this truck. I'd like to turn it into a mobile workshop. Thanks in advance. Best Wishes & Blessings. Keith Noneya

    • @rmaksdirtroadderelicts
      @rmaksdirtroadderelicts  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Hey Keith, big thing would be how bad it was overheated, it could've blown a headgasket, or weakened the piston rings if it really got hot, checking the compression is a solid start on finding issues, these are very resilient engines so id bet its still good. If the compression is decent and it still runs I'd send it.
      I've got a cheapo Amazon compression tester that seems to work decent, it has the adapter to screw into the glow plug hole.

    I've broken the fitting on the pump adjusting the timing that way so yeah it's definitely a risk

    Been thinking about buying an old truck like this for a project. I’m pretty handy but ive never done big work to a truck. Been doing tons of research and I’m pretty confident that I’d be able to get one of these things and make it my own. I just can’t find anything that’s not been bum fkd for under a few grand where I live. Any suggestions where to look for one that’s cheap and what to look for when buying one other than the normal stuff?

    • @rmaksdirtroadderelicts
      @rmaksdirtroadderelicts  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Just gotta keep your eyes peeled for the deals, and be willing to buy as soon as their listed, every time an old idi comes up for sale around here for less than 1500 it's sold same day. Things to look for are pretty basic, I always make sure the engine and drivetrain is in good shape and go from there

      No tuner as it's a mechanical pump. You can turn the pump up with an Allen key though. There are a million videos showing how to do it.
