Very impressive, but I'd like to see them do this on a car with 40+ years of rust and grime.
Daryl Martin Lol this car DID have 40+ years of grime! Obviously cant see much on TV
+EyeWarnedYouB4 15 years is enough if the car has actually been used. Depends on the car of course, some handle rust a lot better.
yeah
rules only said that it had to drive up on its own. didnt say it had to have everything connected and tight lol
I think the Beetle was designed to allow one person to exchange an engine in one hour, so if you are doing it in 30 minutes you are doing very well. Good work.
A machinist I knew was driving his vw from Amarillo tx to Lubbock Tx and the engine valves burned up. He took the engine out the engine apart hitched a ride into town got the parts went back to the car and did a valves on the side of the road. He drove the car years after that.
One of the greatest vehicles ever designed
That'd be like epic prank on somebody...take their engine out and place it on the passenger seat of their car...
While theyre paying for their gas
@@marnixprovoost7961 LMAO
Or dismantle the entire car and put it together again in their bedroom while they are sleeping.
easier to take a vw engine out than in a lawnmower lol. gotta love the simplicity
I put the engine into my Baja in 34 minutes today on my lunch hour, then removed it after work in 12:45. Fair enough, remember this is a Baja with no bumper or rear shroud, but, yes, very easy. By the way, the only tools I used were one 17 mm wrench for the engine bolts and my leatherman tool's flat screwdriver blade to disconnect the fuel line and throttle cable.
Still got a Baja?
. . . back in the day @ O.C.I.R. ca. this contest was done at annual " Bug In " events there 70's-thru 80's except it was a (2) man crew and participants were required to drive the bug forward 1st, showing it ran , then remove and replace the motor without any pussy ramps and had to tighten the four mounting points with tools . . .
lolahavasuaz I actually hold the record for the engine pull along with Don Schenk
I remember that from Hot VW's magazine when they featured those events back then. Wasn't there a guy named Fred Simpson competing at those events? Remember the "California Caravan?" I never participated but it was insane. I think they got up to 400 vehicles one year, that's a lot.....anyway, there was the engine pull, the engine blow, etc etc. I think life was much cooler back then. Time really slips by. See ya'
I'm sure the factory service manual called for more than " finger tight" on the engine studs.
Try this on an audi... will have to be a marathon show!
Good luck if it's quattro.😂
Impressive. I wonder what the record is for an "unprepared" engine swap in a car that's driven 100,000 miles - Rusted screws in the fan shroud and all. Plus reconnecting everything properly, like the accelerator cable and the alternator cables.
Of course there's no standard way to test that, but I'll bet it could still be done in 10 minutes by experienced guys.
2 weeks and a Bucket loader to slam it back in during -10 F temps did it
I like it when it dumps its oil and fluid at about 3 mins.
This is exactly like when you catch and release birds, thy do a big crap as they fly off..
Because then you'll end up with teams putting anti-seize on the bolts and other trickery that the officials may have a hard time spotting. "Being able to move under its own power" is something that is easy to verify and impossible to fake.
Wow if it was only that easy with other cars
Thats insane !
@casemods Cheers for that!
i love old vw's! =)
very impressive
well yeah, its an old school VW beetle, they was designed to have the engines replaced with ease.
wow awersome video!
hey wel done Steve and gang it was good to watch
Nicely designed
@LolEYEHasFun It's a '76 so it should be a 1600cc.
If you were trying to go for the record, which engine would you have in it? The 1200 is obviously lighter.
@gtrefghuk Theyre normally under 3-4 clamps so you can service it within 2-5 minutes
Hell you cant hardly change an air filter in 15 minutes on a modern car !
For the previous record there were two cars and they swapped the engines between them.
@222billp Can a person even change an air filter in a modern car without a mechanic, or without voiding your warranty
I'd imagine it's easy to do as your lifting the motor back in... but I do agree. I've had to replace a cable twice so far I hate it! I just hope my clutch cable holds up.
It's not necessary remove the starter. I think they only use two of the four main bolts in the case.
impresionante.......
I do hear the engine start up, but look on the floor on the driver side. I see FUEL!!!
How would you get the body looking that shiny on an old beetle?
same deal though i never have to worry bout the heater cables cause i never run them on the buggies i make
Seen a video where it was made in c. 27 seconds:
4 men sits inside car, car drives inside 15 metres area, car stops, men out, loose engine, move it 1 metre, engine back, men inside, car out. 27,29 seconds.
man that is so true it takes us about a day to repair one engine like that this car only has very few wires to the engine bout 5 wires and the accel. wire
@TechTipsForYou
Do it, the strange vibration is the road btw....
Would never pass the crash test standards. Still think they should be allowed to, let the insurance figure out how much additional risk there is and insure the cars appropriately.
Yes there are costs to having cheap cars that don't do well in crash tests, there are also benefits. Poor workers are more mobile and thus have more job options. Risk vs Benefits.
Also think about how you're safer in any car with seat belts than on a motorcycle.
estos tipos la tienen re clara
Somewhere I have a video I took of the same when they did it in Helsinki Ice Hockey Arena. It must have been around 1986 and time from memory was under one minute! I got to dig into my archives to get some proof.
This is in Finnish. If that translates it says it was under a minute. tekniikanmaailma.fi/keskustelu/aihe/t280/
Were all the bolts hand-tight to begin with?
it be so cool if they brung back the old style beetles in 2013
@222billp
you could do it in like 5...you just pop the hood, unclip the stock air intake housing and replace the filter
This makes me want to get a vw bug. Lol
VW should take a 60s beetle, modify it to comply with modern safety laws for manufacturers without changing the look, and start manufacturing them with said car as the prototype.
They didn't drive it 5m away, they started the engine and pushed it down the ramp.
they have the throttle set to a certain point so they dont use the accelerator cable
@garagecrap try taking one out of a fiberglass dune buggy. i think i could do it in under a minute by myself.
I see SOMETHING on the floor. I do hear the engine start up, but look on the floor on the driver side. I see a stream of FUEL!!!
and the alt/generator wires but I guess it doesn't need them to run so long as the battery is charged
Hehe, I've got a feeling that the guy who went underneath the bug had loose nuts.
back when I was a kid, I could change one in about 20 min.
Is the Type 3 fast back as simple as this??
@ 222billp: Because the garage wants some money too when customers come to them ;)
It’s like one guy a bolt !
cool
beetle will never go extinct!
did they have to loose/fasten the top engine bolt
Dude what is the top speed of a beetle of this year model?
I see SOMETHING on the floor. I do hear the engine start up, but look on the floor on the driver side. I see FUEL!!!
Crazy!!! but cool !!!
@TayouJin I know...
why...?
@TayouJin Its a crapping shame, it was so well made...
Now thats a proper race car. Just when the engine is failing pulling it into the box old engine out new one in and of you go agin :D
@gmd1417
What? Fuel line, throttle cable, ignition wire to the coil, two voltage regulator wires, you're gone......
The fact that I didn’t hear any curse words
Peep that Snap-on box
Whats with the audience being behind the bullet proof glass, in case they shoot the mechanics?
lol what?
It need more time to take off my pants than these guys need to replace an entire engine... xD
And they always say it takes a day if I bring the car in for inspection ...
I think I saw a trail of oil in the floor, after the car drove, did you?
Uploader: lookup CZcams tags for stretching to proper aspect ratio
to remove a volkswagen engine, 4 bolts, 1 wire to the coil. 1 fuel line, throttle cable.
Dude... you still have to turn the crank main bearings, do the rod bears and the bushings... brand new pistons and jugs will do nothing without the rest...
OK Steve and Adrian. How fast can you put a Chev 6.0 Litre V8 in an RX-7 FD3S that currently has a 13B wanker motor?
wow, i ned their help restoring my 73 superbeetle
Someone should let these guys know they could shave even MORE time off thier record if they used the new hydraulic jacks that pump upwards with both the up and down action of the handle. Not just the down pump. You can buy them at most any autoparts stores these days. It jacks upward when you lift the handle AND when you pump down on the handle.
the best machine germani
JA desmontei o motor do meu mais rápido e montei mais rapido!
They should have shown that the car actually worked BEFORE the record attempt.
@MyLifeRSC
?
i have to take my 1300cc vw bug enguine out soon ... i dont think it will be that quick unfortunatly
Holy shit
the bottem 2 are usually studs.
LoL, the engine mount bolts wasnt tightened.
No tools? How tight are those bolts exactly....
ok thats cool for a motor that only had hand tight bolts but why dont they set the record with a daily driver with all the bolts tightened to spec
Vicesat alguien?
thast just insane O.O
not one bolt removed or installed
@TayouJin agree with you mate!.... now on some cars you have to disassemble half engine just to get to the starter and replace it :S Heil Volks Wagen!
Суперррр!
Ok, now if only Chrysler, Ford, or Chevy would take this concept, and I don't know.....ACTUALLY USE IT... Instead of it taking a FULL weekend to change a freakin' motor!!!!
you'd be fine (;
*brought
2022... COMO??? Y MI MECANICO TARDA 3 DIAS :(
I've got a Crown school bus with a blown...
When I was young and had a VW beetle and a split window bus I did it alone without any help within 20 minutes. That is the normal time doing a good job tightening all bolts in a correct way, connecting all tubes and gasoline line and everything else, just doing a perfect job to leave for a 500 miles trip after that wqithout trouble. Its a nice joke to "hang" in the engine and just roll down from a ramp, but just a joke, "nuts", nothing else.
que lo hagan con toda la tornilleria apretada!!!
