      I dont have wifi in my sewing room so I often take a few screen shots to help me renter what’s to do from a video. So anyone writing instructions for any type of creative project is great for me!

    Great tips! No one out there is really talking about total issues and methods. They show entire video of brushing brushing a napkin but not the problems you can face. I’m moving from a life of sewing which I have done upcycle sewing all my life to more upcycle crafting and reclaimed wood and other objects. So thrilled to hear all your tips! Thank you so much.

    I stumbled upon your channel. The one thing i noticed is you go out of your way to please your viewers and that is so sweet! You address things a certain way and give warnings of past mistakes as well! THEN you do the voice and the board writings for those muting(i mute sometimes for various reasons). It doesnt matter the length of the video. Seriously if i want to truly know what im doing im willing to spend the time. So you go girl do your thing! Thank you for the hard work.

    I have been working on Christmas gifts, and have not been doing decoupsge for long. I ran across your video about using napkins on coasters and avoiding wrinkles. I tried your method step by step, and it worked perfectly! I used the chalk paint, the decoupage glue you recommended, and ironed on the napkin. No wrinkles or bubbles! Thank you so very much!

    GREAT video.
    We did decopage back in the 70s on wooden plaques using greeting card cut outs.
    I think back then we didn't have the great variety of decopage types, either.
    Sure wish I'd known all this way back then!

    I use a cosmetic pencil brush. I really like that for "cutting" my napkins. I've got a pair of my great grandmothers's embroidery sheers. They have short tiny blades about an inch long. I love using those too, but I can see how much nicer they would be if they had a little curve in them. I may need to get me a little pair of curved scissors. Thanks for that idea! I have just started doing this but I have been using liquitex matte medium for a decoupage glue. I don't know how it's going to work because I'm just starting to use it. Before I was using PVA glue and water. But I was having so much trouble with wrinkling and ripping and could not figure it out. So I got out my liquitex matte medium and put on to napkin pieces today. So far they're looking good! I'll have to see how they dry.

    Hi Elf, I wrote you a couple weeks back about the brush I am working on but I have started another project as a gift which is one of those Mason jars. Thing is I am going to fill it with caramel sauce as a gift for my brother. (My profession is a chef but I'm recovering from surgery and cannot work.)
    My question; is there a finishing varnish or cover that would be best for something that will have a liquid in it for a while and will later need to be washed. I want him to be able to use it after the sauce is done. I have covered the lid thusfar, but not the screw ring. That will be left alone.

Yes you're right kids, house who has time for 24 coats of varnish( although I gotta say I'd rather do the 24 coats of varnish than run a house, kids etc 🤔 ha) so as a beginner I'm getting confused with glues and finishes so many different types of every thing 😝 Could you tell me as a beginner apart from emery boards, brushes, paints, and all the other stuff as a beginner what would be the best glue and finish just to start with ?
    Thank you kind regards Donna.

    • @patioelf
      @patioelf  Před 8 lety

      +Donna Fabulous! LOL Donna, I'm kind of with you-24 coats verses the 24 hours it takes to run a household with kids...If you're just starting out Donna, it's fine to use Mod Podge, it's really easy to find-I see it's even in Home Depot now. You can use any water based varnish that you find in the craft store or hardware store. Just make sure it always says "Non Yellowing" you can buy the spray or the paint on type. Satin finish is the one that isn't too flat (no shine) or too glossy. Let me know if you have any other questions. I'm happy to help!

      @patioelf  Před 8 lety +1

      +Donna Fabulous! Hi Donna and thank you! I'm betting you will be good at this...Yes I have heard of her, she's got some lovely work. There's another decoupage artist named Donna Klienman -she's my favorite. I love her work. I have used varnish but I started my book and the video's because I used to be in the Decoupage Guild where it was recommended that you typically use about 20 coats of varnish and sand between almost each coat. I kept thinking, "I still have to eat and clean my home" LOL/ So I started to use napkins more and more (though I still use other papers) and I wanted to make decoupage a lot easier. So I tend to focus on how pretty much everyone can do decoupage, with a little investment up front -I focus on up cycling...and not taking nearly as much time. I'm so happy you found my channel!

    I have a question, I have only decoupaged once with magazine paper. I think I did good for my first time, although I did have a lot of wrinkles. I have heard that some people wet their paper before adhering it to the surface. what do you think? I am buying a brayer and hopefully that with help with future projects.

    • @patioelf
      @patioelf  Před 8 lety

      +Mariana Ayala It seems to me that water makes napkins wrinkle a lot more but the more firm papers work better with paper. It also matters if you're going to decoupage over a large area or a small area. You may want to have a look at this video too Mariana and see if it helps you. :) czcams.com/video/S3iTvtsLt4I/video.html

      +Lyn Machado Hello Lyn, there's a page on Facebook called Mason Jar Madness and Decoupage. They have members from all over the world -you may want to friend them and ask if anyone there has any suggestions as to what you can use. I'm not familiar with what is available in different countries but can you find a spray paint that is made just for glass there? That also works really well. If you friend the facebook page I mentioned please let them know that Patti from youtube sent you, they want to make sure people aren't spamming them. :)

    you are so right about doing small projects first. My first projects where 3 sets of storage cupboards and drawers. The first one is a disaster! I tried working with torn sheets of newspaper soaked in tea water. Yuck!!! So I ended up covering the whole thing in modpodge and then using an iron and full pages of news paper . Yuck!!!! I did not iron it enough and when I put the top coat on it pulled up the paper where it was not stuck on enough. I am currently working on the second set now. I hope to post pictures of all of them when I am finished.

    Hi! I'm in LOVE with your videos! You're a true artist. Quick question (I feel like I should be able to do this without asking so my apologies)....how can I access your website? It takes me to "vistaprint" but it's their homepage and not your website. Do I need to open an account with them before I can access your website?
    There are some products I'd love to get from you directly since you've mentioned it's helpful for you...
    Thank you!

      Hi Caroline and thank you! It's my fault that you can't reach that old website, LOL so please don't feel like you have done anything wrong. I closed that site and opened a new one. It's still a work in progress but you can make purchases there and I'll provide the link here. Thank you for helping me out too! That is very considerate of you! One thing about the new website that I will be changing soon, in order to buy napkins you have to change the category to Kitchen & housewares. For everything else you can use the craft category. here's the link.... upcycledecoupage.com/

    Just wanted to ask if after putting modge podge over your surface I always put layers of polycrylic. Can you use polyurethane? I am thinking no cause modpodge is waterbase & polyurethane is not. Just wanted to check.

    • @patioelf
      @patioelf  Před 8 lety +1

      Hi Glenda, my understanding is that you can use oil based products over water based-but you can't use a water based product over an oil based. The reason is because it takes the oil based a lot longer to dry (or cure). As long as your decoupage glue is dry, you can add the polyurethane. :)

    • @patioelf
      @patioelf  Před 7 lety

      Hello John. Do you mean it's hard to seperate them or has some decoupage glue spilled onto them so they are stuck? If it's just that it's hard to seperate them you can dampen your thumb and pointer finger, pinch the edge of the napkin and pull apart. :)

    I'm in the process of painting my living room and when I have to set my brush down for a while I store it in a ziplock.It keeps the brush from drying out.Iv'e also let it sit over night in a ziplock.when I used it the next day, it was just as I had first started using it.Would this trick work the same with decoupage brush's??....I use the thicker ( better ) ziplocks

    • @patioelf
      @patioelf  Před 8 lety

      +joanna lanzoni Hello Joanna, I love that idea! I'm not sure if it would work with decoupage brushes because the medium is thicker-though I don't see why it would't. If you try it out with a brush that you wouldn't mind losing-maybe you can let me know how it turned out. It's a very good tip. I'm responding to my comments and questions now as I am in between coats of this weeks upcoming project and my brush is in a damp cloth -if the zip lock works I'll suggest that-thank you for the idea too. I may try it, I probably have a brush or two that is on it's last legs & I can experiment .

      With my house paint brush....A week had gone by with out me using my paint brush and I decided to wash it out.It was still soft when I took it out of the baggy.While washing it, I noticed the paint was drying near the handle and I wasn't able to get all the paint out even though I used a scouring pad.So I think for a few hours or even an over nighter with the house paint is fine,but not for a lengthy time.That is for house paint!! It will be a while before I can decoupage anything.I will try it when I do!!

      You can make your own.
      But a flat good quality paint and add Paris of plaster, or fine chalk powder.
      You can experiment on consistency.
      I just bought a clay powder.
      I’ll try to make a clay paint.

      Hi Sandie and I'm sorry for the frustration. That was my old site and I've since put a new site together. I am proud to share that link with you. Please let me know what you think of the site since I will make changes based on what I hear from all of you. One thing I will say upfront-when you purchase napkins on my site you have to make sure you select the category Kitchen & housewares. Then you can search for decorative napkins or Punch Studio napkins, what ever you are looking for. You can then go back to the craft category for decoupage glues and supplies. Here's the link Sandie & thank you. upcycledecoupage.com/

      Hi Trish, are you in the US? I sell them on my website. I'll provide a link to my page and if you don't like the selection that you see, you can do this: click on the link for the napkin (you can click on any link that is hi-lited in blue) and up at the top and enter French Themed Napkins, (that's just an example) you can also enter Hydrangea napkins- or your favorite flower. Also enter "Punch Studio" which will bring up a lot of beautiful napkins. Here is a link my site and a lovely napkin. amzn.to/2g3wMSb
