@@lovelyMissInna Nobody knows better. You can't know better there's not a single shoe on earth actually worth 1000 dollars but that doesn't stop hundreds of people from spending that. Nobody is credible in the world of fashion because it's a bunch of sheep following trends leading other sheep following trends (that's what payless proved here)

The marketer shot himself/herself in the foot because this is the crux of marketing, developing a brand. Soon the slippery slope will prove brands useless to the consumer eye and all the hard work the brand took into developing products will be imitated by knock offs. The term brand is more than a company, it is a reflection of an entity (e,g. Country)

Key word here is influencers. They're not fashion designers, or even stylists. These people shouldn't be in the fashion industry if they couldn't tell a top designer shoe from a Payless shoe. Payless shoes are not well made. I tried shopping there, but the shoes looked smelled like plastic. Maybe they've changed these days, but I'm sure they stepped up the quality and look of their shoes for this experiment. David Argenal welted vs cemented soles, last quality/use of a last, stitching quality, finishing quality, leather quality (genuine vs full grain, different staining processes). There's definitely super high over-the-top markups on designer shoes, but they are of a higher quality. If you like the style, though, and don't care about the quality, go to somewhere like shoeless by all means. I like the message that this 'social experiment' was sending, in that cheap things can be stylish too. However, that doesn't change the fact that the way brands are perceived, as well as the actual quality of the shoes, do play into the market price.

High quality leather, not plastic. These "influencers" clearly don't know what they're talking about.

      For example cole haan shoes.
Ive noticed 3 tiers of quality
      1) made with higher quality leather, nailed etcc priced over $120
      2) a look alike shoe but made with lower quality leather and glued on sole etc.. Priced under $80. Same exact look just made cheaper.
      3) the cheap shit Ross and Marshalls store sells that is laughable at first glance, don't even have to touch it to know its super cheaply made

Thing is that the "influencers" may actually recognize they're cheap. But they also know brands won't want to work with them and they won't get invited anywhere if they actually tell the truth. You'll be hard pressed to find any "influencer" that doesn't do anything but sing a brand's praises. I used to run a fashion blog and initially worked with several brands but they started dropping when they realized I was giving very honest reviews. Brands won't work with people who will point out anything negative. Similarly with Payless, I seriously doubt they'd show anyone who potentially pointed out just how crappy the shoes are. Assuming they even put out crappy shoes...I'd be willing to bet Payless had higher quality one-offs made just for this experiment, which is another thing brands tend to do (you really think Walmart has that perfectly marbled steak at their stores that they show in the ads??). Basically put, so much deception all around.

Perhaps PAYLESS should change their name to PALESSI?
PAYLESS is a terrible name and brand.
    HERE is WHY...
"Of the nearly 400 Payless ShoeSource stores that are closing in the U.S., the most -- 66-will be in Texas, according to a list released by the footwear retailer on Thursday. California is losing 49 stores, New York will have 22 store closures, and 17 Payless stores are closing in Florida, the company announced."
    SOURCE: MARKETWATCH
"Reuters Payless ShoeSource said Tuesday that it has filed for bankruptcy and will immediately close 400 stores in the US and Puerto Rico. ... Payless has been in talks with its lenders for months over a restructuring plan that at one point included closing as many as 1,000 stores, or a quarter of the company's locations."
    SOURCE: RUETERS
If Payless wants to become the SEARS of Shoes then they should carry on, but I can tell you their opportunities are limited with this model. Notice I didn't say they were going to "go out of business". Why not tap all of the market? High-end market with "paylessi deep discounts". This elevates the discount perception. Design is all about perceived value. "PAYLESS is a terrible brand." You can have a profitable business and a terrible brand. A terrible brand works against everything you're working to accomplish.

It all depends on the shoe, the materials used and the craftsmanship. If you know shoes you can tell if a shoe has leather uppers and soles. Many are handmade. If I pay a lot of money for a pair of shoes it’s going to be a pair that will last with quality craftsmanship.A shoe made like that will last for years because you can bring them to a cobbler and have it re soled and repaired/refurbished for next to nothing. My ex sister in law worked for a cobbler and this is the only worthwhile thing I learned from her lol. They obviously didn’t know the difference between the materials and the craftsmanship. I have shoes from Payless and shoes made by Gucci and Christian Louboutin. If I buy high end then it’s going to be a classic shoe or boot I can wear for the next 20 years with the proper care. Classic leather goods aren’t frumpy either. If it’s a trendy shoe that may be in style for a year or two I visit Payless, Shoe World or even Walmart for that matter. Dillard’s and Macy’s also carry shoes with leather uppers and soles that you can buy for 75%+ off during their end of season sales. I’m not brand loyal but materials and craftsmanship I am. I also shop upscale consignment stores for shoes that can last 20+ years. People don’t take the time to have quality shoes re soled or repaired-even the ones that can be so their loss is my found. Same with handbags. You can’t go by where the shoe is made either. It may say Made in Italy but Asian manufacturers have gotten crafty-they purchase warehouses in Italy, staff it with their own workers and their own materials then stamp the Made in Italy on the shoe or handbag. There’s quality leather goods made by Asian manufacturers as well I just typically don’t spend much on those because it is hard for me to tell the quality of the leather. Anyway, they could have learned a lesson the hard way luckily they got their money back.
