I was 17 years old when this came out. I remember myself playing Metal Slug in arcades and behind me was a projector like screen palying songs from MTV and then this clip started. I lost to the game and instead of inserting another coin to continue, just because my ears trapped to it, i remember myself staring at the screen the whole time until it ended. After that, i got to hear it everywhere during that summer.

So in case of overall bright scene with some darker areas you could not lower the power of LED and only manipulate brightness by turning the crystals in LC panel. With HDR capable LCDs manufacturers introduced many LEDs that illuminate only part of LCD panel. So you can turn off or limit some of the backlight. Problem is that you have couple million pixels and maximum couple hundred LEDs. So light leaks are smaller but still present. Imagine half of the dimming zone, so area of 1 LED, being bright and other dark. You end with the same result as old LCDs. Mini LED is the same idea but LEDs are brighter and waaaaaaaay smaller. So you have not hundreds but thousands of dimming zones. So you further reduce light leak. BTW. even with mini LEDs you need a good image processor and good software running it all.
