In short, you only have to look at those schools' records against the west in that timeframe to see how bad they were. Had A&M gone to the east and Missouri to the west Missouri's record for those years wouldn't have been very good.

    I can talk to you all day long about Missouri crowds and why they no longer happen.
    It took 13 years to get Mizzou to to 62k non conference games and 68k to 72k for conference games. And only 1 year (2015) to wipe it all out. The administration and/or CoMO police cracked down on students drinking around the stadium (took away the hill) so now you don't have students attending games (future fans). 2015 insulted a large part of the season ticket holders and they were halved. So that's where we are at. Winning is attendance at this point. Making it affordable for potential season ticket buyers is essential. This is not brain surgery.

Drink, has 2 seasons. 1 with COVID and just a messed up world. Season 2 isn’t about coaching , it’s about talent and MU doesn’t have any. Recruiting is up 2x what is has been in years assuming they all sign. But come on people. With COVID, politics, kids who can’t follow coaching well enough, lack of talent and most Likely not using much of the playbook with this type of talent or lack of talent. Wait, Give this guy a chance to actually do something. Even next season won’t be a measure of his ability The recruits will be freshmen Let the 2022 class be juniors and if he gets talent like the 2022 class those years too, We should see it coming together. We aren’t and never have been Alabama Expectations are way too high at this point.

  • @richardoneal1055
    @richardoneal1055 Před 2 lety +7

    I feel your pain. I've followed Missouri for decades, and the story has always been the same. When they were in the Big 8, they usually played second fiddle to Nebraska and Oklahoma. Dan Devine did well, but it really wasn't until the Big 12 was formed that Missouri had a few good years.
    As for Odom, he deserved a chance, and he is a good defensive mind; just not much of a head coach.
    Why Drinkwitz was hired is mind boggling. He had one year experience as head coach, and several as an assistant, but he was never in a player-devolopment position. And that's where Missouri's issue begins. You can recruit a bunch of 4-stars and still suck; see Florida after Meyer left. There's two primary phases to coaching; the first is to have a head coach that can game plan and run a program. The second is player development; putting assistants in place that can develop the talent. Recruiting follows winning. Look no further than Cincinnati. Starting with a bunch of 2 and 3 star recruits, over a few years the coaching staff was able to develop their talent to the point where they could compete with schools that recruited much better, and over time, Cincinnati was able to recruit better. I should point out that it's very difficult for a G5 to compete in recruiting with any P5, but Cincinnati does so now.
    Next time Missouri has to hire a head football coach, their AD needs to evaluate the candidates better. They got lucky with Pinkel, but winging it isn't a plan for producing a winner.
    One more issue; conference affiliation. The best recruiting area is Florida, followed closely by Georgia and Texas. The best recruits from these areas are interested in playing for Florida, FSU, Miami, Georgia, Alabama, LSU, A&M, UT, and Oklahoma. No matter how good you think Missouri's recruiting is, they're not getting the level of talent of these other schools. You have to develop the players you get.

      Let’s chill on acting like Drink is already a failure. He’s had some questionable game management but he’s the type of hire a school like Mizzou has to take a risk on if they want to reach a higher level. A young up and coming coach that recruits like crazy. He was handed a team with minimal talent, if it weren’t for beating a shitty LSU team last year expectations wouldn’t have been so high for him this year. The roster is not good, particularly on both lines. He needs time to get his guys in so we can properly evaluate him. Missouri isn’t a school that can higher an established great coach and some old rehash head coach isn’t gonna take this program anywhere either. He’s recruiting at a level Missouri literally never has before, about to bring in the 2 highest rated classes in school history in his first 2 years. Give him a chance to get his guys to be Juniors and Seniors and see where we are, don’t designate him as a failed higher already just because he’s 8-10 in his first season and a half.

      @@MU_STL_FAN1 yes at some you have to develop talent you’re right but he literally has not even finished 2 seasons as HC and his players are currently True Freshman and Seniors in high school. We are Mizzou not Bama a rebuild isn’t going to happen overnight. We have a solid chance to go 7-5 even without a QB and one of the worst defenses in CFB. If before the season you wouldn’t have accepted 7-5 then you have extremely unrealistic expectations for this program at this point in time

    • @drewk2026
      @drewk2026 Před 2 lety

      @@MU_STL_FAN1 If you think this roster is anywhere in the same realm of talent as anybody else in the SEC besides USCe and Vandy you’re just seeing what you wanna see. Yes Badie, Rountree and Bolton were/are studs but that doesn’t mean the overall roster has that same talent. The offensive line is very noticeably not good. Maybe not awful but definitely not good. Until the last 2 weeks our defense looked like they would struggle against many larger high schools. You can have a few talented individuals and still be worlds behind other rosters in overall talent. If you want evidence of that look at Badie’s numbers vs. the bad teams we have played vs. his numbers against the good teams. And that’s not a shot at Badie, it’s just evidence that when our O-Line is matched up against respectable teams like A&M, Tennessee, etc. they can’t hold their own as well.
      Yes Odom Is a great D Coordinator, we also 50 balled them last year. If Odom somehow deserves the credit for the few truly good players we’ve had the last 2 seasons (only a handful or 2 of players) then let’s also give him credit for the lack of talent all over the field too. Again, Drink has had 1 full recruiting class so far. Next year his “guys” will be true freshman and RS Fr/True Soph. We want to see progress obviously but next year is not some make or break year where they have to win 8+ games or else he’s on the hot seat like you’re trying to make it seem

    The culture at mizzou games needs to change. It’s the Achilles heel to the program… while the pinkel days brought many electric crowds and great game day atmospheres. The Odom era brought back the pre pinkel era. Mediocre football, little buzz around campus. In order for that to change mizzou must have solid seasons. Whether the team improves comes down to whether Drinkwitz can weather the bad season and continue his early recruiting success. Recruiting under Odom was just not good, and his staff didn't seem to find the diamonds in the rough or develop players as well as Pinkel's staff did. Drinkwitz has built some good momentum in recruiting. To maintain that momentum, the team has to at least look competitive on the field. The UK and BC losses probably won't scare recruits away, but if we continue playing like we did against Tennessee, that might change.

    The downfall of Mizzou football begins with Pinkel abandoning TX recruiting as he moved it into SEC territory. I get expanding recruiting, but don't ever stop recruiting TX. Then Mauk's father and Pinkel himself get cancer. Then the 2015 issues that were blown out of proportion by all sides. Pinkel has to retire and no coach in the county was willing to touch Mizzou so they promote the DC, a not quite ready for HC and former player Barry Odom. Recruiting was tough and then the Purdue disaster in front of the "Tiger Ten". Only one of them signed. However, the fan base is a big problem. Even if the D is very bad it's the fan base and fan culture that doesn't meet SEC standards. You want a winning program? Show up or "show me". Meaning show the recruits. Look at TAM's stadium on game day. Most SEC programs have twice the attendance of a Mizzou game and they show up rain or shine, win or lose and they have a great time. Don't give me the old excuse of Cardinals, Blues, Royals, Chiefs. Where are the Mizzou alumni? Where are the people of mid Missouri. The New AD has to travel and see SEC tailgating and game day events and promotion and bring home some ideas.

    I can say from my personal experience that part of the problem with Mizzou's attendance is that Mizzou isn't as popular IN-STATE as many programs are like Nebraska, Ohio State, Alabama, Penn State, etc. I have some kin that live by Springfield, MO. We went to the Cabela's/Bass Pro Shop combo in Springfield and it was Fall, I only saw ONE person repping Mizzou, a ton repped Oklahoma, Arkansas, Nebraska, even Texas and Illinois, along with the hated Kansas Jayhawks. If that isn't an indication of a problem I don't know what is. I can tell you that no matter how good or bad they play, just about everywhere in Nebraska you will see a lot of Huskers stuff worn in some form or another and going to Missouri seeing the lack of Mizzou was quite a culture shock to say the least.

But Missouri fans don't like to believe it, then say "Well, it is because we have the Cardinals, Chiefs, Rams (at the time), etc." You can love them all! What aboutGeorgia? If you are in that state, you are GOING to see that G all over the place, even though they have the Hawks, Falcons, Braves, Pro Hockey, GTech, etc. There is just a CRAZE for the Dawgs, and always has been.
      But no, I just never felt the "craze" from the people for the program in this state. I am from Arkansas, and you can't drive 2 blocks without seeing a Razorback... even 2 hours away from Fayetteville in Little Rock.
      The population centers are "shared" here as well. Springfield / Joplin feels like Razorback Country, STL Shares with Illinois / Big Ten, KC is Shared with KU / KSU / Big 12, and a little Huskers. It is a challenge here it seems.

    What we have is absolutely a culture problem. Even when Pinkel was here there were times where we struggled to fill the stadium, schedules weak non cons, and lost east games even after beating teams like Oklahoma.
    Our fans aren’t the best. It just is what it is and I think it will be hard to win here. The school also doesn’t market itself very well. Basically all of northeastern Missouri is Iowa fans

      I never EVER understood why the Missouri would take a small school approach to scheduling. Some of the choices they made are beyond me. Just in my time here since 2004 I remember ROAD games at Nevada, Troy, Wyoming, New Mexico, UCF, Toledo, Arkansas State. Not much good comes from that as a power 5 school.

    Like the rest of the Mizzou fans that watched this I too bleed Black and Gold. Sadly you have hit the nail on the head. Bad decisions were made regarding our defense, which led to losses we could have and should have won. If we don't fix that we will not improve. Also you painted the picture in 3D as to why attendance and fan support is so low. My wife and I just payed $165.00 for tickets to the A&M game KNOWING full well we would lose. We attended because we wanted to go to at least ONE game for "old times sake". We had season tickets for nearly 30 years but that ended in 2016 for reasons I will keep to myself. It is hard to sit in the stadium and watch Mizzou get beat and play badly. With the cost of tickets (I also bought a $9 beer that I stood in line for 25 minutes) it is easy to see why the stands are empty. Same thing happened in the 80's and 90's. Pinkel changed that. Let's hope coach Drink can fix this.

    I’m just spitballing here but…
    Mizzou is in the center of the state but forgets it’s not the center of the state.
    Majority of the fans (and donors) showing up at a Mizzou game are driving in from STL or KC, each a 2+ hour drive. Attending a mizzou game is an all day affair-from the time you get up in the morning to getting back to STL (or KC) depending on kickoff can be an all day affair. (I’ve gotten home at 2:00 am when it’s a night game). Why should I bother? The older I get, the less I want to go through that just to watch them lose by 14 to (take your pick). It’s not the money, it’s the ‘sore lower back’ to coin a phrase. Which is a metaphor for all the ‘expenses’ outside of the actual dollar cost. In that case, Mizzou games are very expensive.

He had some of the best defensive teams in the country. They hired him to replace Dan Devine as head coach. Al had a couple of bad years. The 3rd year he figured out how to be a good coach. His last year they played with young players and lost 7 games and he got fired. The man who replaced Al had some of the best players in the country, courtesy of Al Onofrio. Pat Ivey was elite at physically developing lower rated/unranked raw recruits into all Big 12/all SEC Caliber talents. Kuligowski coached/created what became D Line Zou. Schemes/Pressure allowed the linebackers & dbs to be successful. Especially in the SEC East Championship years. I said from the start when Barry Odom turned over the staff, not retaining those 2 was his first & one of his biggest mistakes. The whole Barry Odom 3-3-5/"multiple" defense he tried to force & put into Demontie Cross hands was fuckin terrible.
