Hi! I lived in Husum for nearly ten years and frequently visited Sankt Peter Ording. Weather changes can be abrupt! Once I was there with three other female friends and a seven year old niece. We were experiencing gorgeous sunny weather on the nude side of the beach, when we were suddenly overwhelmed by a violent COLD rain storm. It rained so hard that we didn’t even have the possibility to get dressed, but ran to our car naked, arriving thoroughly drenched with our rather soggy clothes clutched to our chests. (Plus, of course, beach blanket, towels and our picnic.) We were all laughing hysterically. THEN we had to get dressed. Imagine five naked bodies packed into a car attempting to dress from the skin out, all with chattering teeth while constantly bursting into gales of laughter! I still laugh whenever I remember this incident.

This kind of weather is more common in the winter. I love it. The wind feels like its blowing all your worries away and purifies your soul. Also it is so calm. It’s just you and the stormy sea. There is nothing better to come back from a windy walk on the beach and warm up with hot chocolate or tea.

You seem to have had bad luck with the weather. Yes, the weather can be like you experienced but it can also be sunny and warm and calm. Especially in July or August.
But you need to be prepared for rain and cold and wind, too. It is always windy at the Nordsee. But if you have 30 degrees in summer it is a very welcomed breeze...
Just cling to what we locals always say: " there is no bad weather, just wrong clothing " 😉.

The begining of June too wasnt it? I dont remember. I wouldnt expect summer to hit before June 21st each year thats a pretty safe bet for planning vacations :D May is also not a summer month here so I wouldnt expect a lot of sun in May. Best regards

In the last two decades, the weather has become clearly "unstable" for all to see. Today you can expect three days temperatures around 15°C and wind and rain and the following four days temperatures around 25°C+ with sun and or thunderstorms.
In the previous decades, times tended to be more constant, with changes in the weather occurring more in a 14-20 day rhythm. And yes, on the coast itself there can be quite abrupt weather changes.
      (Similar to in the mountains)
Between 2010 and 2012 it got really cold in the north for the last time.

summers have been pretty great in Germany, at least for the last 50 some years i remember. i think the ocean has a lot to do with the different experience between North and South in Germany. The south has overall better weather i think. Here in the US we are looking at temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit right now. roughly 40 Celsius. AC is a must. no need for beanies :) My recommendation for friends asking when to visit Germany, i always recommend end of August through September. Nice reliably warm weather, not super hot which sucks without AC, and you can tick off Octoberfest at the end.

North Sea and Baltic Sea have an entirely different character. One is flat coastline, rough open sea - despite the wadden sea - cold and strong winds, sudden weather changes, really cold water. The other one hilly landscape with cliffs, chilly but rather mild, with a fresh breeze, water temperatures between cold and warm depending on the season and weather. You should still go to one of the smaller islands in the North Sea! The weather is usally a little better out there. More than once you could see heavy clouds over the mainland but the wind blowing towards the mainland kept them there. I spend the first 10 summer vacations of my live on Baltrum starting as with age 0 (about 4 month). But even on the islands you can get bad weather. Guess who was sent out in the rain to get the paper and fresh bread rolls, poor little me once I was old enough with 4 or 5: đŸ€Ł Btw Baltrum is one of the car free islands and the smallest of the East Frisian Islands.
Best time to go there is probably from mid July til the end of August, which is also peak season on the islands. You will have to start looking for an accomdation really early. Some families here in NRW make their reservation for the next year when they check out.

Römö is the southernmost danish island in the North Sea. But you can go by car, too. Maybe you rent a van and take the campsite at the beach. That’s what most of the people do. So you have to book in advance.
In my experience late summer is the best time for sunny weather at the North Sea. Wind is one of the reasons to go there 😁. But it varies. The water will be warmer in the end of summer, too. Even if it’s overcast: you should use sunscreen!

These beaches are practically a dune. And I remember very well how you can literally get sandblasted if there is wind like that...
But you also get big waves from the open sea, as there is no flat or island in the way there. Can be very fun, IF it's warm enough to swim. (And that's by everyone's own definition ;) )

We were vacationing on different east frisian islands. First time it was mid to end of August and before we were in the hills of middle Germany and it was quite warm but on the island the weather changed and I had definetley packed not enough warm clothes. I only had sandals and I ended up buying winter boots because it was just too cold. But we also had two great weeks in mid July. Very sunny and warm.

Oh, I'm a little jealous! You were there where we always vacation in the summer. We love the North Sea coast and the North Frisian Islands, especially the island of Amrum. You were on the neighboring island, Föhr. I once did a guided mudflat hike from Föhr to Amrum with our daughter (16 years old at the time), quite extraordinary! And it was hot, very hot! Without wind! But you always have to reckon with rapid weather changes on the coast. The weather can change from rainy to sunny and clear skies, and vice versa, within 15 minutes. But that's normal. And it's never wrong to take a good rain jacket (Goretex or similar, not plastic) with you. We've seen and experienced so much along the coast, including seals (not the same), and there's always something new to discover. Hopefully we can spend a vacation in North Friesland again next year, even if everything has become more expensive. Let's see. For tent - camping we are already too old. Our daughter is now 18 and doing her "own thing" in the summer. And that's just as well!

Hi! My family had a summer house a bit north of Vadehavet, at SĂžndervig in Denmark, where I spent every summer holiday growing up.
Weather conditions are largely the same, although the weather changes faster near the English Channel.
So I’ve had summers where I look like a negro on photos from a deep tan and lots of sun and bathing, but also one summer where it rained constantly the entire vacation.
The lower parts between the dunes became little lakes, but even that was an adventure, because we could sail our model boats and walk right along beside them, not risking difficult salvaging maneuvers like on real lakes, when a boat got stuck and the water was deep and muddy

Whereabouts would you guess you would hit North America if you were to follow NL 54Âș westward?
It may surprise you, but you’d hit north of the US, in Groswater Bay, Newfoundland, Canada! 😊 That’s how far north you are geographically. Luckily an arm og the warm Golf-stream runs through the English Channel and up along the Danish west coast

When our kids were young the favorite place to go with toddlers was the island Pellworm. there is only a ferry, no bridge, so there are (nearly) no day tourists. and it doesnt have much sand, but mud around, which is fun for kids. and it has fenced little places beyond the dike, so the sheep wont interfere, and the kids cant run away. inside theres a little playground and some strandhuts. great for relaxing. if you rent a room in a farm, your kids can see when the animals are fed, maybe even help.

  • @Flugkaninchen

I think Sank Peter-Ording ist mostly popular with the locals because it's the only sand beach on the North Sea that can be reached by car, so that it's suitable for a spontaneous day trip!
I've experienced all kinds of weather there from more than 30°C to snow on the beach, with kids sleighing down the dykes do to lack of hills.
You can spot the locals easily, by the way. They usually walk barefoot from Easter to October and wear Wellies in the winter. Combining beanie hats, hoodies and rain jackets with shorts or jeans with rolled-up legs is not uncommon. 😁

Nice to see to North. I never been there in St.Peter Ording. But I was more than 3 times on the Island "Amrum"(North Frisia) . Very peaceful place with wide beaches etc... And the Weather...well... I think you had a bad weather weekend. Weather in June itÂŽs sometimes not very stable(not every Year). I think you have more and longer"best Weather Phases" in July,August. But itÂŽs expensive because itÂŽs vacation time and you have to book early. Heads up and maybe you have another chance to see the North in a sunny, warm day.... Best wishes to you all

No, it is not always like this :D But it can be... You can also have days where you have 30 degrees + sun and it changes to 18 degrees + wind/rain within minutes. Trust me, if youÂŽll be there on a sunny day, you dont need to go to Spain, Greece etc.
If you really want to visit a German Island, I would highly recommend Amrum. Weather is kind of the same lottery, but the beach is amazing. Google it and youll see what I mean ;)
If you stay for a few more days in Schleswig-Holstein, try to visit Husum, Flensburg and Haithabu/Hedeby. Beautiful places.

It always depends on the season and also the year. This year's June was extremely sunny and hot in the south and central parts of Germany, but surprisingly rainy in the very North. In some years it might be the opposite, or rainy everywhere etc. But in July and August it mostly warm. Wind is not a season, it just depends on the day. There are windy days in all season, and there is sunny weather in every season

I recommend Mount Lusen & Dreisessel. Rachel, Arber and Osser are also nice. But get here before October or it gets to cold. (Over 2m of snow is common in the winter). "Buchberger Leite" in Freyung gives of some rainforest vibes. The area also has some very good wellness hotels

Dear fam, we have been to SPO last year around Oktober and the weather was fine. Wind is always a thing (that is why we Germans build this wind turbine parks into the North Sea). But the cold and rain we not yet have experienced. But we'll take a lot to read with us coming September/Oktober and there is the Bath-Center, where you can get warm again. There is a joke about the sheep and their fur AND the sheep need the wind, because they would topple over without, they are a bit lopsided. GRIN, stay safe and warm, South German Greetings.

If you want warm sunny summer weather and kinda warm water, you’re better off going to the Baltic Sea. At least in summer you can get very warm weeks up there and it’s in general not as windy as the North Sea. But it’s still not super reliable oc. My experience is, it can get rainy, but it always clears up fairly quick whole year around
