  • In March of 2021 we left on a plane from America to live in Germany, a country we had never stepped foot in before. With so many cultures, religions, landscapes and foods to discover, we had a goal to live internationally and learn more about the world; specifically Europe. Now we’ve lived in Germany for 10 months. It’s hard to comprehend so much time has passed as we have thoroughly enjoyed our time here! In this video we provide an insight to how our adjustment has been, what our favorite memories are, how we are learning German, and give an insider's view of what we have planned for this new year.

I just experienced the cutest thing ever. Everytime Willa turned to the Camera, my daughter (1,5 years old) was smiling and giggling maybe she was trying to communicate with Willa. That was so cute.

It's really amazing to learn how many adventures you had during only 10 months in Germany. Willa is so cute, I can't wait to see her going to KITA. She will learn German so fast talking to the other kids. My son was 3 when he went and it took him 1-2 months.

    Happy Birthday Willa!
She really is 100% adorable, it shows. Of course being a toddler now 2 years old, she has to go through that "opposition phase" (the "no!-and-I don't-know-yet-how-to-express-my-frustration-properly-yet", but it is a GOOD thing that she goes through that! And with amazing parents like you are, I am sure you will support her in the best way going through that stage and teaching her how to get over it with time and love.

Great to hear you are having a great time. Looking forward to seeing what you make of the Harz mountains, as this is where I grew up and then studied at TU Clausthal there. Planning to move back to the region eventually.
Make sure to take the Steam train to the Brocken. Maybe a bit touristy, but late January / February chances are good that it might be a Winter Wonderland up there.
Too bad the Harztower they are currently building at Torfhaus won't be open yet when you go. That will probably be a great attraction. And just one more example of how they are investing into tourism there. The Harz is kind of being rediscovered as a beauty spot by many Germans right now. In no small part due to travel restriction that make people opening their eyes to what's actually to do close to their homes.

Hehe, Willa, the star of the show. That incredibly cute smile always gets me.
Not dissing you two adults, but she really is just too adorable.
When she went really close up to the camera and totally blocked the view of Rissa, I had an 'aaawwww' and LOL moment at the same time.
Loved seeing her grow during your time here. It will be awesome to see her take up both English and German, probably a lot faster than you two adults.
She will become your little translator girl in a few years, I am certain.

The sun sets earlier in winter here, but also sets later in summer than in most parts of the Us, as far as I can see. :-) At least at the place where you live. Berlin, for example, would be a whole different thing with the sun sets happening even around 30 or more minutes earlier than where you live. Great videos, thanks for sharing them!

What you are doing is not only fun but SO SO important. To see and experience the world, and giving your daughter a fantastic start in life; to make her understand that the world is her playground. In your case, to REALLY experience another culture (Germany) and to see, feel and eat(!) other parts of Europe too. ...instead of going for a weekend to Tiuana ?!? (Nothing wrong with Mexico, but a weekend in Tiuana will not give you much Mexican experience...).

Willa is so cute, the step to the Kita is a big step that i coming. The first three months of Kita are gonna be hard due to the kids getting immunized by "sharing" all the usual stuff kids get, covid totally aside. So yeah there might be some days at home ahead. That's a rough step all parents have to go through, so I wish you guys a lot of strength and endurance and good luck :)

    Well according to Christmas trees.
first of all "a Fir tree/ in german "die Tanne/der Tannenbaum" is lasting longer inside the house than "a Spruce tree/ in german "die Fichte/ der Fichtenbaum" ...keep that in mind ....therefore a "Tanne" is a bit more expensive.
And the time you bought it wasn´t that much of a problem for a tree (no matter if fir or spruce) you cuted yourself barehanded = clearly a fresh tree...but to put it indoors that early was....when the tree is stored outside in the cold (without the net) dumbed in a bucket of plain water (but you have to get sure that there is always water in the bucket) the tree will stay fresh for weeks/over a month with no signs of loosing needles or becoming brown especially when you give him a fresh cut at the stem every 2 weeks..BUT in a warm living room it won´t.

    Hi Risa, Tanner and Willa!

If you liked that raclette Laugenbrezn you might try something at home. You can buy frozen Laugenstangen or Laugenbrezeln at about every supermarket in Germany. They just need some minutes in the oven. We love to cover them with cheeses and sometimes bacon before we bake them and they taste delicious especially when we eat them still warm (not hot).

Is Kita a thing in the US? If not and in case any American viewer is wondering: a Kita (short for "Kindertagestätte") is something like a child daycare place or maybe even a tiny bit nursery school mixed in, its mostly for the kids to be taken care of, have fun, play and learn a little.

Eggs in Edeka are indeed expensive compared to England. Why not get some chickens? I get my eggs from a woman up the road who re-homes caged hens from large poultry farms and lets them roam free outside, all day if they want. Freshest eggs often laid the same day, deep yellow yolks for £1 for six. That's about €1.20.

What really is a fun part to learn a new language is to watch animation movies in the foreign language. For example "Findet Nemo" ist gorgeous. Especially when you know the movie already you can follow the story and get the flow of the foreign language. What do you think?

You did very well and hope you will do in future as well and let us partizipate on your joy of life with your tiny family. I am sure you will do your best introducing your families into german life and cultures without any obstacles due to the corona virus. Cross my fingers for your sunshine at the Kindergarten. I am sure she will manage it because kids dont have any problems to join and play together. I am proud and glad to see you feel well here in Germany and hope this will be for the next years too.
