    I used this video to change the oil/filter in my cub cadet! My husband passed away a year ago and I knew it needed it. My neighbor offered to help me, but I’m pretty independent. The guy at the store told me I didn’t need a new air filter. I appreciated his honesty, but he hates blowing them out. Suggested just banging it on a hard surface. Now I need to service my Lawnboy push mower. Thank you for the help.

      Hello Elaine. I have the XT-2 Cub and it's six years old now with 120 hours on the meter. Regarding the engine air filter, the filter has a foam pre-filter on it. Remove that pre-filter and wash it with Dawn soap. Then put just a little engine oil on it and squeeze out as much as you can. Depending on how dusty conditions are, I wash and oil the pre-filter about every 10 hours. I've not had to replace the actual air filter since I bought the tractor in 2016. Just keep that pre-filter clean.

    Hey Shop Dog. Great video but as far as the blades are concerned, I also take them off but I scrape them clean, sharpen, then do a balance test

    Nice video! Tip..... When changing the oil the 1st thing to do is remove the dipstick then drain. The oil needs to vent properly and this will speed up the draining time. Next Before you close off the drain plug remove the filter as residue oil will still pass into the used oil pan. Next what you didn't show is once the dipstick level is showing full run the engine 2 or 3 minutes, this will fill the oil filter! Then check the oil level again and fill the amount required. Best regards, Jay

      Those are good tips. Another thing I always do, and this should be done on auto cartridge filters as well, is to fill the oil filter with oil before replacing it.

    • @gordbaker896
      @gordbaker896 Před rokem

      Warm up tractor before Changing the Oil. Be sure you have the correct Filter, Oil and how much oil the engine needs. Filter is horizontal and cannot be filled. May recommend NOT putting oil in the filter, although I always have. Some big companies do NOT recommend filling the filter so manufacturing debris left behind does not get into the Oil stream. Put Date and hours on Filter.

    Nice job on the video, very easy to follow and liked the stills being used where needed.
    As far as pre-oiling the gasket being personal preference…….i think not….I think if you DON’T pre-oil the new filter gasket, every previous generation that’s passed away that has taught their sons and grandsons to do an oil change would collectively spin in their graves and the earth may be tilted off it’s axis!

    If you could find a foam sleeve to put around air filter, easier to clean & last longer. Take off, clean, let dry then work in some clean engine oil. Reinstall.

      Hi, I reread the manual and it looks like the air-filter change light is supposed to go off after two hours of use. That did not happen in my case so I may just disconnect the battery and see if that makes the notice go away. @@ShopDogFabrication

      I prefer not to use it. Grass gets packed in all kinds of areas and if the water doesn’t get all the grass clean it will stay wet and rust the deck. Cleaning it with the deck off I’ve had my decks last longer. Just my opinion.

    • @jimg7318
      @jimg7318 Před rokem

      I use the deck wash. Have the blades set at the lowest setting. After that I raise it to the highest setting and run it for several minutes. My cub is 21 years old and still runs like a top. Proper maintenance is the key. I added the deck wash a couple years ago since it did not come with one. Before that I would scrape it at least twice a season.

  • @G56AG
    @G56AG Před 4 lety +1

    I'm pretty sure the XT2 has grease zerks on the front wheels, if so, you missed those, also it is important to check the balance of the blades after sharpening. If a person doesn't remove the blades they can't check the balance, so its highly recommended to remove the blades. There's enough vibration on these big mower decks we don't want to add blades that are way out of balance, they don't need to be perfect, but they should be close. The music was WAY TOO LOUD.

    • @geojohnson5613
      @geojohnson5613 Před 4 lety

    • @akbychoice
      @akbychoice Před 2 lety

    your using the wrong engine oil, you need
    small engine oil it has high zinc the oil you used will not protect the cam.

    • @ShopDogFabrication
      @ShopDogFabrication  Před 4 lety +4

      Rafael Torres the Kawasaki manual has a classification of sg, sf, sh, sj, or sl listed. And ranges of viscosity based on temp ranges. No where does it say you must use zinc additives. The oil I am using meets these classifications.

    • @G56AG
      @G56AG Před 4 lety

      Under the SAE classifications there are limits on how much zddp can be in the oil, SAE30 has the same limits as any standard automotive oil. Under SAE SG to SL you can't have more zddp unless the oil is SAE40 or above. If you use the required SAE approvals you won't get more zddp unless you are using SAE40 or above. If a SAE30 really has more zddp, then it won't meet the SAE specs required in the owner's manual. All motor oils contain zddp, but the max allowed is lower in all SAE30 and a bit higher in SAE40 and above.

    • @G56AG
      @G56AG Před 3 lety

      @@bigwilliearmitage Its interesting, a lot of oils make that same claim, but API limits the amount of ZDDP and phosphorus in the oil. An exception are SAE 40 and up, they consider that vehicles using that grade are usually older and might not have catalytic converters, so the limits are higher than the SAE 30 grade oils.
