- The collapse of society is coming. It’s inevitable. That is at least if you’ve read all the headlines about climate change, war, insurrection, nuclear tensions, the dying oceans, falling sperm counts. It’s a lot to handle. Zeke Spector travels to the Ozarks to meet with a religious community of doomsday preppers to see what it takes not to be afraid of the world.

I liked the quote "I'm not living for doomsday, I'm living for Tuesday." I think it's a much more positive outlook. Doomsday preppers are always seeming represented as these crazed loons who wish for armageddon and hate society and all that it stands for, but clearly, that is not true. They are just prepared and don't want to be caught out in the open with their pants down. I can respect that. I think when they start disassociating from society, hauled up in some bunker, thinking crazy thoughts, and being a shut-in, that is when it turns unhealthy. This approach however is a good one.
Why do you care what they do with their own life? Their decisions won't affect you at all. Who are you to judge them as crazy or unhealthy? I am glad about the rest of your thoughts on the subject though.
@@commonsence8223 I care because it's very sad to me that people would rather choose to withdraw completely from living. You are right, it doesn't affect me, but I think that it's sad when they go too far and turn down friends, family, jobs, all for the sake of some mystical apocalypse happening sometime in the future. It's no way to really live
@@colechapman6976 yes, but you don't control thier choices. For them, it's not sad. They have the freedom to choose and you should respect it and not worry about it.
@@colechapman6976 'it's very sad to me that people would rather choose to withdraw completely from living', there is also other kind of people that completely detach from reality to cater their delusions, and they are becoming more of a threat to society than these guys
I believe some preppers are really as crazed and focused on the "inevitable" downfall of society in our lifetime. This group isn't, and I agree this just seems like a way to live that they can enjoy today and also be ready. I mean this guy is still buying mutual funds lol. He's prepared for anything. But I don't think they are the overwhelming majority of what is seen as a "doomsday prepper".

"It is not physically possible for the government to take care of everybody on a large scale crisis" Hard fucking facts. No blame. No ridicule. All personal responsibility. Respect.
The government as we know it right now isn't interested in taking care of the people anyways.
They want power and control
@@rosssivertson6339 You've missed the point. We all know what you just said,
That is true to an extent as the further away you are from a military base during a SHTF situation the less likely you are to receive any form of help. The trade off for that help is effectively marshal law as the military which needs resources as well will move out into the surrounding areas to control said resources. And will provide security on a broader scale but still you would be giving up many freedoms for that security.
The reality is that the military represents at most 1% of the population. Law enforcement will also try to maintain some level of security but it would be very localized. So yeah the government can't protect you as an individual and won't bother to try.
Sometimes crisis comes from dysfunctional community that starts to panic buy. The local market near me run out of toilet papers, rice and flour in less than a day for months. Because people simply bought and stored things for no fucking reason.

Over the years we have compiled a large collection of first aid supplies and flashlights. Last weekend we sorted through it all and ended up with 2 large tubs of supplies of just those 2 things. It's a great feeling knowing we have all of it and in one location. Great video.
I live in the Ozarks and outside of any city/town 10k>, basically everyone is a "prepper" as a matter of a way of life because living off the land is what we do and we generally enjoy it. We don;t look at ourselves as "preppers" per se. Just like alot of big city folks can't fathom why anyone would want to live this lifestyle, we can't fathom why anyone would want to live in a big city (but alot could live in a big city if we wanted to tomorrow, but i don't think you could say the same thing about the opposite). And although we like to think of ourselves as independent, the fact is we have to rely on those around us sometimes w no "strings attached", so there is a strong sense of community that seems to bind people closer here than say in a large metro area. We all know our neighbors and our neighbor's neighbor like family (even though we don't always get along all the time). If one really wants to see and learn how to be self prepared, just spend some time w the Amish or Native Americans who were taught by their ancestors.
Everytime I watch a prepper mini doc it seems like the interviewer always tried to play them as “crazies” but this guy did a great job of not being 1 sided. I enjoyed this

She was the one with the most wisdom I thought and was a good educator too. I started prepping & moving towards self sufficiency when I was 25 after breaking my legs in a car accident and being out of work for a year. @@TheSlizzer348 What about "I'm not living for doomsday I'm living for Tuesday"
People in Ukraine found their world ending when the Germans arrived, AFTER the genocidal actions of Stalin. At a regional level, "worlds" end.
People are more concerned of "todays world" ending. Like how it took 300 years for the world to begin to unfuck itself after the bronze age collapse and after every empire collapse that happens rather commonly throughout history. Basically people want their family's to not suffer as much as the last group of people had to in hard times.

Really enjoyed this. Both interviewer and interviewees were really entertaining, respectful and kind. Great piece.
Actually a prepper running a business that sells survival supplies is a great idea, because at any given time you'll have a massive stock of that kind of supplies. And instead of spending money maintaining and replacing that stock, you're making money rotating it out. The people running the first aid kit supplier have a mutual support agreement with the group selling shelf-stable rations, and with the hand tool suppliers, and with the ammo distributor, etc. That alone, the array of businesses and the social network among them, means very little extra effort in "prepping" required.
But also you're recognized for having everything you... And not saying where you are isn't enough nowadays - image tracing will expose exactly where they are, who they are... Today I pumped in a video where they showed they can find a person just by a parcial photo of your hand... By veins, etc. If one wants to be anonymous it's really hard to be in a public position. Everyone who knows about you and your activity might be a traitor - enemy.
The businesses and social network will help for bartering, but in an actual SHTF situation, money, as we know it, will likely be worthless.
@@cheebacheeo5876 Will you provide a link to this video please? I'm not sure how this could be possible since there is no national database of vein formations on people's hands. Furthermore, in an actual SHTF situation, the possibility exists the Internet will not be a usable asset. I don't think you'll see very much image tracing if no one can get online.
I thought the same thing when I watched an episode of warrior poet society when they were interviewing a guy who sells pepper food buckets. Very smart.
@@spacetimeworm What I meant was that their little group is prepared as a side effect of their business activities. And after a disaster they can continue to help each other. I didn't mean they would continue their business as usual.

It's very odd that alot of special forces guys turn preppers after they see the inner workings of our wonderful government 😒🤔
They realize how easily things can fall apart and how inept government is at stepping in.
Not odd. More people should take a lesson from this. when someone who has seen the worst parts of the word, how fast societies change and crumble say "this can, and probably will, happen to us." Maybe we should listen.
Do you think those guys are actually seeing the inner workings or just a very unique perspective. Like in my understanding this trend makes all sorts of sense when you think about the lived experiences these guys would have had but that doesn't necessarily mean their conclusion can be taken as a matter of fact. Right like terrorists also view the world in hostile and threatening lenses which is what leads to delusions like caliphates. Doesn't discount their experiences but of course their conclusions will always be touched by these delusions
Its not just in America. In Europe, you will find many former military personnel moving off the grid or to remote locations. History repeats itself and so its easy enough to prepare if you have the correct mindset. You can have all the tactical gear in the world, tons of firearms and still not survive. Being prepared is first and foremost a mindset. Its not just Special Forces that are turning to being prepared, if you have traveled around the world with an open mind, you will see the value in being prepared.
Excellent observation.

This was by far the best story I think Vice has covered. She'd a little light on some decent people that are sometimes misunderstood. In today's day and age if someone can't relate to being prepared to some level or degree than maybe they should be. These seem like great people in a great community with a positive vibe. They just wanna live their lives by what they think God would want and they don't at all seem like they are out to hurt anyone that's for sure. The more I learn about this community it seems to me they want to help other's. Being a little more self sufficient in times where society is so dependent on the system seems like something we could all use more of. And these people are more than willing to share their knowledge and what works for them. Ofcourse we are all different but I'm grateful there are still people out there that offer advice just because it's the decent thing to do.

Bear camo is too far. You nut
I hate to criticize other men. We get a bad enough rap as it is, especially those of us that are older. But, some things need to be pointed out. I see this in countless prepping videos and that is of a person being out of good physcal shape. Pastor Fox is a good example of what I am saying. Don't get me wrong, I follow his channel and he has a lot of very admirable qualities, but being in good physical shape when preparing for whats on the other side of what we have now, is one of the most mandatory things a prepper can do. I understand that the man is a former Green Beret, but I think that we can all admit that Pastor Joe is not in the physical shape that even he would admit that he needs to be. I get it. We are all busy and all making the preps we think are necessary all while living life and the trials that may bring.
I am of similar age to Pastor Joe and know all too well how difficult it is to stay in shape when of advanced age. Age should never be an excuse though. If you cannot run up a series of hills, or trek several miles in difficult terrain, then you are ineffective to those around you. We older guys lose hormones that the younger set take for granted and that makes getting in and staying in shape that much more difficult, but it should never be an excuse to not strive to be in the best shape possible. I am not trying to shame Pastor Joe Fox. He has a lot of really good ideas and his heart is most definitely in the right place and he is obviously one tough man.
This is all just food for thought for all the preppers out there. Do your preps, learn necessary skills, stockpile what you think you need, but get in the best physical shape that you can regardless of the difficulty. You will be that much better prepared for what is to come. I hope that you all will take this in the spirit that was intended and I am not trying to step on anyone's toes. Just add being in good shape as one of the cornerstones of your life.

I started scanning to see if this was indeed going to be in the comments, didn't take long, and totally agree, best STATEMENT, best COMMENT.
Should you store that bag of beans under a tarp outside in the humidity and heat....no, or worse in a rusted 55 gallon drum out in the sun with standing water on top.... definitely no.
@@carrowxhex6891 watch his other videos. You'll notice that it's not just a bucket. They actually have a sophisticated storage method. That food is good for 5 years minimum, as it sits.
@@thnk4yrslf762 We had beans stored the same way in our garage put them out in the spring and with the humidity there it went bad in August. We opened the lid to the some stinky soup
Beans and lots of them so my dog and I can still fart on my couch while staring at the wall when tshtf.
That was great reporting. No leading the content, or portraying them in any sort of light. You simply showed their way of life. I can appreciate that nowadays.

Please keep on being you!👍
@@alexmark6580 Whether or not he capitalized the words "unnecessarily" is completely subjective and depends upon the emphasis of the phrase or word, which again is a subjective matter. Hi Zeke, As you can see from my profile I am an old guy. However looks can be deceiving. I grew up on a small farm in the late 50's and 60's. What is call prepping today was just the way we survived back then. I have recently been following a lot of the prepping shows. In just about all of them there is one thing that everyone is going to need that is missing from those shows. Feel free to private message me on FB and I can share it with you. If it is something you think is worth while you can share it with your subscribers.
Honest look at preparedness. Respect for that. I was very impressed with the opened minded take on preppers
I’m pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t twisted into some type of either “religious nuts” or “anti-govt” extremism.. or both. I think he was fair in his representation.
Right the first good vice host, with a decent view for this shithole channel
I was hesitant to click on it because of that. Glad I finally did. Vice still sucks tho

My parents never grew a single edible thing until they got old, and my father grew tomatoes in a 4x6 space. When I was a small boy, we always had enough food, but the compromise was in the quality. Mom and Dad had 6 kids total, the last one after the two oldest were already gone from home, otherwise, the compromises would have been harmful. I grew up on corn flakes and hotdogs. In my time I have taught myself how to effectively grow enough food for my family to survive with no income, if necessary. I realized that I could never stockpile enough canned goods and flour to survive more than a few months. Do the math. If I have to feed myself, my wife, our 4 children and their families, I would need thousands of cans of food and 1500 lbs of flour, just to make it through one winter. We learned how to preserve meat, and vegetables for long term storage, and we learned how to grow high value food crops that can sustain us for the 6 months of the year, when nothing edible is available on the ground. Preparing to protect what we have is a secondary function, but one that we take seriously. No, we are not moving up to the mountains, and we are not getting ready for Jesus. We are preparing to have as normal a life as possible, until society recovers and the grocery stores reopen. Off-grid will not be a choice people make when the grid fails. I can generate electricity from burning wood. I can heat my home with wood. I can get water from a well, and hunt the small game that is abundant where I am, and I am not way out in fly-over country. You would be surprised how much living one can extract from a few acres, and the adjacent woods. We're not preppers. We are just capable of making our own food, if need be.
What is the name of the song at 17:03 ?. I really like it

Am I putting words into your mouth and hiding it behind sarcasm? Yes.
I already have Poseidon arrangements when the things come out.
The weirdest thing is that amongst preppers there is actually a lot of very clever people. I mean to be able to run a serious and well prepped operation for a community it takes incredible amount shrewdness, ability to compromise amongst individuals while advancing to everyone's goal, planning, determination and training. And before laughing at these people or think they some nut cases first look around your own house and life.. Check do u have some cash saved up and assets or are you living by making payments to credit card on month to month basis and simple injury and absence from work for couple months has the ability to send not just urs but all ur dependants lives crashing down in bits and peices simply cuz u were laughing at those who planned and peppered while urself living in dream and fairytaled safety of 'as if' stabled society.. That stupid Katrina proves that large scale crisis in any given territory is possible and what happened then? Looters and rapists and murderers were everywhere. Instantly communities had to group up and fight the 'bad' guys off... Well that was one city and entire world was helping US to deal with consequences.. Now what would have happened itlf let's say Yellowknife volcano burst.. And it would cuz a natural disaster on continental scale... Then who would help and if even so then when would they get around to u to save.. Or tsunami on west coast like it was in 2004 in Asia which killed like 200thousand people alone.. Anyways
Rolled my eyes seeing a video from Vice about preppers. Ended up giving it a like. I didn't think vice had objective reporters anymore. Good work.
It was a shock how they portrayed us
I'm honestly shocked that vice went in on this so neutrally, and am thankful they did. Reminds me of the lebaron episode. Hopefully they continue down this route opposed to being biased as they have been. We dont need to be pushed to any side, just provide unbiased material - journalism.
They've been kind of doing that more and more recently. I don't know what changed but their documentaries feel like what they were years ago. Good stuff!
