  • It's a question as old as human consciousness: what happens after we die? While we may never have a full answer, there are plenty of first-hand accounts from individuals who have perhaps touched the boundaries between life and the great unknown via near death experiences (NDEs). In this episode of Spiraling,
VICE producer Zeke Spector tries to conquer his own fear of death by attempting to recreate the conditions of an NDE in order to try and understand what death might teach us about life itself.

I died on LSD in 1995. I didn't know it was a special batch to commemorate Leary's impending transition to another plane, and I took two hits. It didn't take long to realize they were dosed at 500mcg each. There is nothing more ego shattering than experiencing your self obliteration. The only thing that existed was a white light, and I wound up on the ceiling looking down on my body. Coming back to baseline took 18 hours, and I never looked at the world the same since. I've been extremely respectful of everyone I've encountered, so I can rest easy knowing I was a good human while I was here. I did my best to be welcoming, generous, and non-judgmental. So, my conscience is free. I just don't want to go before my dog. He would be so sad.

It's a beautiful thing that my uncle could be there for him in that moment. I am still bursting into tears every few days because I will never forget that experience. This is the benefit of believing in an Abrahamic religion believing in the after life (heaven/hell), that this world is temporary since the body dies & rots but that the soul never truly dies - it passes into the next life where people will be reunited with their families if they are good on earth. Obv this all comes down to individual belief but this is the belief I personally have and although it's normal to fear death, it gives a sense of peace&ease knowing that this isn't the end.
Logically speaking, it just doesn't make sense to me and others who hold my view that we are somehow born into this life where there are many trials & tribulations people face, to then die into nothingness? It doesn't add up. I've looked into other religions/beliefs & some believe in reincarnation, but even this makes no sense to me logically speaking.
I've had bad trips when I've been high thinking I'm going to die&it want pleasant experiences, but after having those moments it has allowed me to reflect on what I do in life&what I do consciously & subconsciously&how to become the best I can for myself & to those around me. & when someone passes, I have hope that we will meet again based on my belief in life after death. (If I sound crazy, it would probably help to read translations&the break down of verses in the Quran; an old version of the Christian Bible&also Jewish Bible which I have personally done)

It's not possible to ethically determine if the human brain produces DMT directly in the same way we have proven it does in rats because of the nature of the experiment. However, during induced cardiac arrest there is evidence that the mammalian brain increases DMT production. Why? Who knows? What purpose does it serve? Who knows? But there isnt much doubt left in the minds of those who research this that the human brain does the same. This is likely independent of the pineal glad (as has been the myth for the last decade). That study has also been done. The mammalian brain produced DMT during induced cardiac arrest, with and without the pineal gland. It's a whole brain phenomena

The form your energy takes after leaving it's current form does not resemble "life" as we know it and constantly relate to being an 'afterlife'.
It will never be conscious in the way we know things to be conscious on our physical form.
But I have the strong inclination that the 'afterlife' is a conscious state of existence in where we are only as conscious as the rest of the world around us. The trees, the earth, the molecules themselves. Its all.. concious... but not as we see conciousness.
And in the 'afterlife' our energy is reoriented into the same level of energy as the rest of the universe sits in naturally.

In sleep you dont have the body, nor mind, nor world, not anything, but you come to waking and you say : I had such a good sleep! I feel rested ! ....While in you waking state you get tiered, bored, you suffer the good and the bad equally and than you go to sleep again to get rest from you waking stage .... So, in a way, you are doing 'death' every day of your life ...and as a fact , you cant sustain your waking stage without going to nothingness regualrly .... And you never think twice about that part of your existance , right ? ....as I said : interesting ....

This, along with lots of spiritual studies, makes me think that we humans often wallow in our misery or stay in toxic limiting, relationships because deeper in our minds, in some twisted way, we believe suffering keeps death away.
Perhaps we intuitively but unconsciously know that if we live full happy lives, death will just happen as a continuation of larger life; such as when leaves on a tree transition effortlessly from one color to another then fall to the ground.
Fear [and thereby terrorism] gives us the illusion that our ego selves can control death-and therefore life.

I've read about various religions and wished I could have believed in them and developed some sort of faith or relationship with "God". But I'm too skeptical in general and a big part of me believes we are just animals with abnormally advanced brains. Like an accident yet are able to trick ourselves and each other into believing there is more meaning than there is. Many sociologists believe that religion and culture are borne out of our fear of dying and a need for there to be something else i.e immortality. Because we essentially can't handle the fact that we're animals and there is nothing else. I wish this wasn't so logical to me. Having said all that I do sincerely hope that there IS more and that I'll one day be able to see it.

I'm 27 and have had 3 NDE. The first time was when I was 14 and had a misdiagnosed medical condition that resulted in me reaching a point where I was extremely close to dying of dehydration. I ended up in a different hospital in ICU for several days in and out of consciousness. That shook me for a long time. The second time was when 24. I developed a septic infection while I was in the hospital. One night I got up to use the restroom and collapsed and I felt myself slipping away. I felt like I was in the middle of a long tunnel. On one end was life. I could hear my mom and the doctors calling me. The other end was a mystery. I felt extremely heavy. I was stuck for what seemed like an eternity unable to move either direction. Eventually I woke up in bed with lots of people I didn't know standing around my hospital bed. But then I saw my mom and realized I was still alive. I struggled for quite a while with this not sure how to feel. I knew I should be happy to be alive, but I wasn't. I felt like I was in the wrong place. I wasn't afraid of death. I longed for it. I wasn't suicidal, I just felt like I was meant to be dead. The most recent experience was this last July. I had a bad rollover car accident. I don't remember much, but for several weeks I wrestled with that same feeling that I shouldn't be alive. If I'm honest I'm still struggling with that. I learned recently that I suffered a TBI that I will never fully recover from. I'm still coming to grips with what this means. I just keep telling myself there must be a reason I'm still alive.
Those were my NDE. I've had countless out of body experience as a child. I had a wierd neurological condition that resulted in extreme muscle spasms and pain. I would reach a level of pain that i would fall into this catatonic state where I was crying and moaning, but I was unresponsive. A lot of those times I felt like I was transported to an observatory. I was above my body watching everything like it was a TV show. That messed me quite a bit. I didn't understand it, and I was afraid to tell anyone for several years.

It was incredible how quickly I accepted death, how I immediately and quite adequately prepared myself to never exist again, even though it was so unexpected. It didn’t change my life though. (This was years back) I remember I commit suicide once after my 16th time doing a chloroform overdose I decided to hang myself in my closet since I'd be knocked out, all I remember was that I lost control of my body and I could hear myself losing my breathe gasping and choking and I lost my hearing then it went black and then I saw a huge white flash with black outline and I started floating and I didn't have control and I went literally through my walls into the living room where I saw my family there and I saw black again and gained control of my body and I heard myself then all I could remember was seeing saliva every where on me kinda and pulled myself out to prevent anything else while breathing heavily for air but I still to this day don't know if I was hallucinating or if it was accurate in the actual living time line but I could hear them cooking and stuff but yeah ever since death Well I've noticed it's inevitable but at least you get to chose the way day if you really really care obviously I'm going to live my life with care but it's a very weird experience

I have had maybe 20-25 near death experiences through Ketamine and DMT. The DMT one permanently changed how I look at and behave in everyday life. I actually left my body and saw myself sitting in the corner where I did the DMT and went through the wall/a thin veil to the otherside where it was dark and filled with interwoven dark red and blue swirling and pulsating geometric patterns. I immediately saw a bipedal figure in the corner but it was so dark that it was just a shadow. It quickly noticed i was there and came right up to my minds eye and telepathically said "What are you doing here? This is where WE are". Before I could process this and reply, I could feel that I was being pulled back into my body. This 3d universe we live in seemed dull in comparison to what I just experienced, I can never stress that enough. You just have to experience it for yourself to fully grasp what I mean. After that night I was 100% sure that we exist outside of our physical bodies. After that my mind opened up and I started reading about all religions and everything metaphysical for the next year.
The rest of my NDE experiences were of varying degrees. Some were terrifying and some were filled with love and great epiphanies that I could never seem to bring back with me. Its like I had this new understanding or volume of information that I couldnt bring back with me as I was funneling back into my physical body. Its actually very frustrating.
The best one was when I left my body and saw myself sitting on the floor with my headphones on. I travelled through the floors and walls of skyscrapers and talked to weird people that didnt look like people and floated in microcosmic spaces and just when I thought I would never come back, I started coming back down. My ego started piecing itself back together bit by bit like footage of an explosion but in reverse. I even remember the moment when I realized that I had bones! I had never been so happy to have bones again! When I was fully back in my body, I was so thankful to be alive, I started pacing back and forth, I ripped open the curtains and stared out at the world as I was panting in disbelief. That blew my mind!!! I could go on and on but these psychedelic experiences helped me believe that there was more than what we see in front of us in the physical world. It made me less afraid of death and in turn helped me process my best friends death.

I was in ER for a hand fracture. As soon as Ketamine rushed through the IV, I was rushing out into a spiraling wheel of gears. I didn’t like the experience from the get-go. It was not fear but it was extremely uncomfortable and a feeling of helplessness and restriction. The speedy mind travel was like a persuasive 3-D theme park effect -- just that I wanted no part of it. At the end of the concentric/spiral run of circles, there was a momentary moment of peace but that didn’t last long. I could hear some chattering - likely the doctor's talking -but the helplessness continued. I had multiple personalities or viewpoints during this episode. I felt I had become a hollow object of white matter with no body and I wanted to get back to normal life. I didn’t care if they didn’t fix my fracture. Nor did I want the medical devices stuck around me. Most of these hallucinations likely occurred during the latter half when drug was wearing off. Also things were happening in multiple planes in almost parallel sequence. In the nether world, I had died (when in reality nothing happened) and there is a group of doctors trying to revive me; my family has been called for a final sendoff. I was convinced I died due to overdose. Later, when I was able to get some consciousness when the ketamine was wearing off, I was really surprised that nobody was around me in the room. Whoever was there gave me so much reassurance. I needed people around me. The drama of the weird, terrible world would continue though. I can open my eyes with difficulty and see the nurse - she is doing something instead of helping me! When I close my tired eyes, I would get back straight into the multi dream-world with no loss of info, and continued from where it was left off unlike a dream. It was spooky and tossing experience and I never want to go through this drama if I could avoid. I hope NDE is a bit more peaceful.

Could you explain how it was awful and how you still ended up with a reduction of fear? I’m seeking counselling now but a small part of feel like nothing will resolve unless I try psychedelics again and resolve it in that headspace, but also don’t want to make it worse.

I would be extremely hesitant to do DMT, not anytime soon, but I’m open to the idea of it for healing this wound, if anything.

I had a near death experience and went into a dark, deep place.. I was conscious.
After years of healing I was able to find a new understanding in life. When I had this one thought about a childhood trauma, and thanks to my unique experience in life. I'm able to observe my memories with a more prescient mind?
It was like a light bulb turned on.
Years later, after all the meditation and reflection.. and in one fell swoop, a buried connection in my brain, a neural impulse that had been shut off many years ago, and my synapse had formed around it. I realized that I was wired differently, and wondered if I had just actually fixed something that had been broken. In a sense. Yes, I'm able to focus with much more depth and clarity now.
I had a unique experience, I went to a dark place when I got in that accident. I like to think I was just drifting, and something woke up in me that reminded my consciousness, Hey! Wake Up!
Our life is a journey to gain understanding, that much is for sure.
