Wide feet? Allen Edmonds 3E vs D width dress shoe

  • In this quick video, I show the difference in width between an Allen Edmonds Park Avenue in the standard D width, versus an extra-wide 3E (EEE) width. I also show an example of a C (narrow) width. Do you have trouble finding comfortable shoes? It very well may be because you have a non-standard width foot.

    For many years I thought that I had extra wide feet, so most of my shoes are H fit. However, recently I realised that the width of my feet are actually normal, standard F fit, but my toes splay out so much that the only dress shoes that seem to fit are extra wide. I now mostly wear F fit shoes but with wide toe boxes, not stylish but comfortable to walk on all day. Anyone buying shoes should look at the toe box width as well as the shoe width.

    I've always had problems with my shoes as well since i also have wide feet (i also call them duck like) and i only very recently learned that there are wide sized shoes! i decided on buying thursday boots that offer a wide size and i hope this will be a moment of eurika for me since ive always suffered and i often buldge out of the side of the shoes i have, some shoes i ever go over the sole's exterior width and i overhand it!
    thank you for showing this! this has confirmed my theory that wide sized shoes is the way to go for me!

    Does the heel width change too or only ball? I mostly have the problem that i can choose between having my toes pinched or my heel slipping because i have narrow heels with a wide ball size and low instep.
    Should i give the AE widths a try? If i can find a retailer stocking so many sizes 😂

    • @CobblerBob
      @CobblerBob  Před 4 lety +1

      Andromedarr - I have no idea if the heel width changes too!! I do know that Alden, another high end American dress shoe maker lists their size as for Ex: “11-1/2 B/D” where B is the heel width and D is the ball width. If I remember correctly there’s usually a 2 step standard drop from ball to heel width. Aldens are significantly more expensive than Allen Edmonds though.
      That being said I’d definitely go to an AE retailer and get fitted. They’ll have a variety of sizes and widths for you to try on. They probably will not have your exact shoe model and width in stock, but they will have something in the same Last as the one you want to try on. Then when you get the right Last, size, and width, they’ll order in your shoe in the color you want. I’d advise having it shipped to the store if it’s not too far away and inspecting them closely at the store for defects before taking them home.

    • @CobblerBob
      @CobblerBob  Před 9 měsíci +1

      In my opinion, NO, I think that's way too much to ask. I think you can get one shoe width up by stretching, like from a 14D to 14E, but D to EEE is 3 widths up.

    Do you know if the heel part becomes wider as well?
    I got the AE Fifth Avenue last month in 11D and the heel is perfect but the toe box is a little tight. I had a cobbler stretch the shoes for two weeks and picked them up yesterday.
    The shoes felt great and I wore them the rest of the day but towards the end the day my pinky toe started to feel pressure, probably because my feet swelled up during the day, as feet normally do.
    I should've exchanged them for 11E but I was worried that my heel would slip, which could've very well been the case as I have narrow heels.
    Thanks, Robert. I really enjoy watching your videos.

    • @CobblerBob
      @CobblerBob  Před 6 lety +2

      Eye Heart Sushi I honestly don’t know if the heel gets bigger. I know on some shoes like Alden, there are 2 letter designations after the size, one for the shoe width and one for the heel size. I don’t have those 11.5Ds anymore to compare, but I really do not think you’ll have any problem going up a width on a shoe with laces. You should never have to live with the shoes impinging on your toes. That’s exactly why I like Allen Edmonds, because they allow me to accommodate for my extremely wide feet. I wear an 11.5 3E on the 65 Last and have never had any heel slippage issues on any AE shoes.

    • @CobblerBob
      @CobblerBob  Před 5 lety +1

      AE might (I’m guessing) do special orders? To tell you the truth, I’m not sure... I’ve thought about doing another video on dress shoe makers that offer wide. It’s a 2 part equation:
      1. Do they OFFER a wide width?
      2. Do they HAVE a wide width Example in the store to try on?
      For example, Johnston & Murphy MAKE the Hyde Park II cap toe oxford in 3e width, but you cannot try one on in the store. With AE you can try on almost any size, then you order the width/length/color/style you want and they ship it to you or the store.

    • @CobblerBob
      @CobblerBob  Před 5 lety +2

      ticklemybrain1 - also, 3e to 4e in theory is only 3/16” difference. Let’s say you’re a 10 4e, you might fit a 10.5 3e comfortably.

    Can someone explain the measurements again in cm, its very hard to understand the US inches break down, I understood the EEE version you said it was 4 and 5/8 inches but what was the size of the D, I couldn't heard properly. Is it 4 and 1/8th of an inch ?
    Suffering with the same issue of finding the right width.
    Many thanks!

    • @CobblerBob
      @CobblerBob  Před 2 lety +2

      Yes, I made this video a few years ago, and today I’d do a better job of it. So In the US system, each shoe width increase is 3/16” wider or 4.75mm. In theory the EEE would be 9/16” or about 14mm wider. I measured the outsoles max width of the Ds at 105mm, and the EEEs at just under 116mm. The actual measure difference in width was about 11mm.

  • @johnsantello9731
    @johnsantello9731 Před rokem

    What is the difference between E and EEE in inches? Can E be stretched to EEE.

    • @CobblerBob
      @CobblerBob  Před rokem

      In theory, it's 3/16" per size increase, so in theory it would be 3/8", but in practice I think it's less of a difference than that. No, I don't really think an E can go to EEE. I think the max you should expect to get is one letter width increase max. Other than tearing the leather, the other problem you'll have is that your foot will then not be resting on the part of the footbed with cork underneath. It will be resting on top of the part of the footbed with the gemming underneath, and it will feel uncomfortable.

      To be frank, there’s no easy answer to your question. The hardest thing about purchasing shoes online is getting the correct fit. What you’re really trying to do is find out which Allen Edmonds last and size actually fits you well. Yes, going to a wider size should close up the V gap a little bit, but then you run the risk of the ball area just being too wide, and getting increased creasing across the vamp because of the extra space. There is also some production variance. I’ve got 3 pairs of AEs all on the same 65 last, and although the V gap is pretty tight on all of them, there is variance. On one pair it’s completely closed. On another pair, the gap at the opening is about 3/4 of an inch. You can do this: purchase two pairs of shoes, knowing you’re only going to keep one. For example, if it were me, I might purchase a 11.5 3E and a 12 2E. MAKE SURE that you DO NOT flex the shoe, not even one time! And ONLY stand on clean carpet! If you bend the shoe even once, it will wrinkle across the vamp and they probably will not return it!! Then you can try them both on and return one pair.
      11.5 3E in the Allen Edmonds 65 last (they build the Park Avenue, fifth Avenue, Strand, and a few other shoes on this last) fits me perfectly. 11.5 3E in the 97 last (Macneil and Grayson) does NOT fit me as well. I’ll get some impinging on the right side of my right pinky toe on the 97 last. If you’re open to purchasing a shoe secondhand on eBay, that’s where I really dialed my lasts in. I had a pair of McNeils size 11.5 2E I wore for a while. I want my favorite shoes because they were too tight. I will not be selling them on eBay for I think the same cost that I purchased them and turned around and put the money into a new pair. AE has sales all the time and especially around holidays.

    • @CobblerBob
      @CobblerBob  Před 5 lety +3

      abdulnaser dahbali as you saw from this video, it will be considerably wider. Also, the style of the shoe makes a difference, if it is a derby, you’ll have more ability to tighten up the shoe with the laces. If it’s a loafer, there is absolutely no ability. It’s impossible for me to say for sure, but I would guess that there’s no way a 3E would fit if you normally wear a D.

    Thanks for the comparison vid. Out of curiosity: 1) what is your Brannock size (with socks on)? 2) have you had success sizing down 1/2 size and going up to 3E on AE 65 last, or do you typically keep your true heel-toe size and just size up on width?

    • @CobblerBob
      @CobblerBob  Před 4 lety +2

      Andrew King - on the Brannock my left foot measures 11.5 e to ee. My right measures 11ee. I have a very wide forefoot with normal arches, and a normal width heel. I have found the Allen Edmonds 65 last size 11.5 eee to be an absolutely perfect fit. 12 eee leaves too much room around the vamp. 12D is waaay too tight. My right foot is noticeably wider than my left. In the 2042 last (ie Acheson loafer) I bought 11.5 eee, but it’s shorter, and narrower, so next time in the 2042 last I’ll go up to 12eee. The 97 last (Macneil) cuts off my right pinky toe just a little in size 11.5 eee, so next time I think I’ll go with a 12 ee in the 97. I may do a video on comparing the 65, 97, and 2042 lasts.

    Do you find Allen Edmonds are wider on average over another brand? In the past I have had to buy florsheim 10.5 eee. The last time i went to buy shoes the sales sold me Johnston Murphy 10.5 D and they fit better than the florsheims. They are the extra comfort line. I printed out the Allen Edmonds shoe/foot sizing chart and it has me in a D.

    • @CobblerBob
      @CobblerBob  Před 5 lety +1

      D Clan dan - in my experience, Florsheim’s and Johnston & Murphy’s D width is wider than Allen Edmonds’ D width. I believe AE’s run more true to size, because they offer E and EEE, widths, where as with most of the retail store brands, it’s very difficult or impossible to get a wide width, so they make their standard D width on the wide side to try and accommodate everyone. In my opinion, that’s also why J&M and Florsheims are often not as supportive nor comfortable.

      Sorry for missing your comment. I can't say for sure how one brand will fit relative to another. Isn't New Balance a sneaker brand? I don't think you can compare a dress shoe size to a sneaker size, but I can say that the Allen Edmonds 65 last, which includes these Park Avenues, their Fifth Ave, Strand, etc, is a narrow and long last, so in the 65 last you may need to go UP a width.
