Mortimer wheeler s wife Tessa wheeler is buried at StStephens church ,her grave has Roman tiles , a reminder to all the amazing work done under her guidance at verulam Roman town near Stalbans.
Her husband Mortimer generally gets all the credit but locally we know the real story .
Funny how the interpretation differs from pre war to post war ideals.
Pre ww2 interpretation is about oppression of romans forcing their ways on the Celts
Post ww2 (frere 1955) interprets it differently, more positive , realising the Celts wernt wiped out & replaced by 'Italians '..
But remained in power , as long as they 'bent the knee' so to speak.

Everyone in StAlbans knows the names of Mortimer and Tessa wheeler, I'm so jealous of the diggers, although nowadays we understand the most important things were not the walls floors hypocausts, mosaics, wonderful as they are , they are not uncommon, wheras those living inside the walled city after the Roman's ( admin craftsmen legions) left , the archaeology that is not obvious at all, stains above the Roman , remains of wooden structures, things we know about today that wasn't fully understood back then, but respect for the wheelers who changed archaeology from basically treasure hunting to archaeology becoming a science, 50 years ago my degree would've been a BA , 30 years ago I left college with a BSc no longer under the Arts archaeology is now a science.
Tessa Wheeler is buried in StAlbans, St Stephen's church, a late ( 10th century) Saxon church , above her grave is a memorial built using Roman tile / brick , Mortimer was the front man Tessa did majority of the recording & dating the phases of 400 years under Roman rule.

1:17 I know that pot , well not on speaking terms, lol , but seriously it's in verulam museum, almost everything Mortimer and Tessa wheeler excavated is in the museum, which didn't exist & was built to house the wonderful things they found.
