This is 1991 - only reason I know this is because my nan and her friend are in it, and her friend moved to St Albans in 1991 and passed in 1992. It's also likely a Wednesday market as the place isn't anywhere near busy enough for a Saturday, and there's no kids around (only a few in buggies).

Summer 1991 only months before the november 1991 IRA Car bomb blew themselves up and took out Barclays bank opposite Tescos, I remember it well i used to walk past that bank at least once a week.
St Peters Steet retail is now a shadow of what it was then.
In the evenings there used be a Hot dog van outside M&S run by a couple
of east europeans that made hot dogs with real pork sausages, it attracted Bikers from miles around, used to go up their on my Honda 250 get a Hot dog and have a chat. never saw any trouble but the police closed it down because M&S and other retailers were worried their windows could get broken if trouble broke out?

Not sure if Tesco's was better then than it is now (free plastic bags, lol. Could have as many as you wanted(Any store)).

Note the stacked empty boxes discarded by fruit and veg stalls.
Better quality than any supermarket and cheaper.
Fresh from the London market, not from a supermarket distribution centre.
Sainsbury killed off, butchers shops, bakers, delicatessens, wet fish shops, chemists.
Now they have shut down their respective counters.
The council want to turn this town into retirement home, bring back the old market, so we have a reason to shop in town.
You can only drink so much coffee, visit charity shops or buy mobile phones and spectacles.
The only choices in this town.

Its got worst post covid/brexit. The modern day St Albans market is a ghost of what it once was.

It was a great place back then, now just part of the commuter belt , extortionate house prices and selfish people with their own agenda. Such a shame.
