  • There's so many cocksure people out there that'll just steam in and naturally find their place through trial and error, but what if that's not you? If you're worried that you're not ready to take part online because you feel like you'll be rejected by the community for being a hinderance or a liability, then you actually have potential to be an outstanding credit to the community if you overcome the initial mental hurdle. Luckily the iRacing community is mostly made up of people just like you, hoping to find more racers that are just like them. You can join in and help make someone else's day with a good race.

Really impressive empathy skills to work out that as a rookie it's easy to feel this way, I got shunted from behind in my first race and still felt at fault even though I knew I'd hit my braking point, like the guy behind magically had the skill two get through the corner carrying twice as much speed in the same car. I saw everyone else as seasoned experts and when I lead my 3rd race for 7 laps and finished 2nd I actually took a while to process the fact that we were all a bunch of noobs feeling the same way.

Great topic and dialogue Dan! I've been sim racing for 15+ years and still get nervous everytime I grid up in an online 'lobby' race. Over that time, you definitely learn to ignore the pessimistic people that must voice their dissatisfaction in someone else's driving style or harping on 'non-intentional' collisions. Nobody drives a perfect race, and the winners may or may not even be the fastest driver on course, but are usually the ones that make the least mistakes from lap to lap. So lesson is to just be comfortable with the lines you are driving and focus on repeating your lap times within a few tenths of each other, and metaphorically (or literally) mute everyone else around you, and over some time, your confidence will grow as well as your enjoyment in competing online.

I always feel bad for the guys who are trying to learn and are so afraid of getting in someone's way or ruining someone's race. The fact that they care at all makes them 100 times better than those toxic idiots who think they are the next Senna and everyone should just move aside for them. My advice: Go into the race with no expectations. Just focus on hitting your marks and racing clean. Just by doing that, you'll be surprised how well you can do. Even if you are way off pace, you'll probably gain a handful of positions just from attrition. Some of my most fun races where ones where I finished well outside the top 10. I'll take a clean respectful battle at the back over a pissing contest up front any day.

This may be long winded ...but it may apply to many "beginner" racers out there. My name is Jim & ...
I'm glad I found this article ...it addresses real issues I'm having. But part of the blame must be accepted by some of the iRacing sites ...when I ask advice ...I'm either ignored or in one case told to "stay on Forza 7 with the rammers". I found this hobby by accident last Christmas ...being a semi-retired older fella & bored ...my wife bought me some entertainment in the form of Xbox One X ...Forza 7 ...& a Logitech G29 set-up. I built a "Rig" for it all & had so much fun I got into some better equipment. I'm now running top of the line Direct Drive Fanatec stuff with the inverted pedals ...I wanted GOOD equipment! It did make me better but practice is the answer & eventually ...on some lower skilled Forza Live Lobbies ...I'm placing in the top 2% on certain tracks. However; when I move on & up ...I get thrashed & my lack of talent embarrasses me into quitting the Lobby. I have tried communicating an apology ...but 90% of the time there is such a language barrier & I end up muting the mics. When I go to iRacing sites I'm pretty much treated like a "Forza Punk" & get mostly sarcastic responses or none at all. It seems like the opposite ...iRacing is NOT interested in us because we started on Xbox & Forza & that seems a little backward to me ....in "reality" F1 driver's start in Go-Carts ...in computer racing ...we must start somewhere!
So I'll ask you & any here for advice ...how do I move on to iRacing? What do I need for hardware ...software? How do I join? How much is it? ...& describe the general rules for beginners. Help me move on to iRacing ...lol!
    & thanks for listening

Good topic! I haven’t been racing online since a driver drove into me which made me rocket launch to the driver in front of me. The driver in front of me then thought I was responsible of the crash so he started driving into me after it down the road while cursing like there’s no tomorrow in the chat. I literally felt sick from that drivers sim raging. I am a pretty descent sim racer and I always take caution to others in the race. I rather have a great time and be immersed in my rig with other good drivers then to win. But sadly this episode has made me a little “scared in a way” to join online again. I believe most of us are nice people that share the same passion but someone needs to chill out this sim raging attitude.

Hopefully you took advantage of the ability to file a complaint against the driver. That is not the kind of attitude the iRacing team wants to see in their races. The driver would more than likely just get a warning, if it was the first complaint filed against him. However, if the language and the tone of the messaging were bad enough or they have numerous complaints against them, they may have their chat (voice and keyboard) privileges suspended for a time. In extreme cases, they might earn themselves a short 'vacation' from the service.

Awesome vid loved it and made me to rethink to "maybe forgive Iracing and people in it."
I have had hard times to return to Iracing for a long time, because every wreck i have been trough have been purposely done in Nascar or in GT, F3 racings. i avoid every wreck when i see the opening and when there is none i try to cheekup as much i can to avoid to run past it. or some one always always have to "send it" in every single turn not being patience. i see it in the rear mirror giving them the room they ned but still i am the one who gets the blame and taken out of the race. i found it really frustrating that every race i went into just totaled. i had good IR i had good SR and lost it because of some that does not know "patience" to wait until it is clear to pass. then i speak of the LMP drivers. F3 have been alot more forgiving because everyone there does the racing mistake that is acceptable and more competetive. but all others people just wreck you without any feel. even Netcode is to blame half the wrecks.
that is the only reason i quit Iracing. werry discouraging because of it, i returned not long ago havent driven a single race, but might continue with F3 only.
but yet again awesome video, hope more people out there that are like minded return that are good people :)

Good interesting video, i've had somewhat of similair issues granted not really a beginner but still nervous issues about doing online rated races. Mostly 1st lap incidents, i've about made it to 2k IR now and i barely qualify in races and rather prefer to start from the back because literally every race i do people managed to crash half the field in the first lap in choke points of the track. (Turn 1 Interlagos in VRS GT3 this week for example).
This tactic almost allways ended up getting me into +IR positions at the end of the race with a pretty much non existing incident counts except maybye a few offtracks here and there. I still kinda hate this issue cause it possibly has robbed me of wins where i had the pace of the leaders but i truely hate getting mentally ready for a 40 minutes - 1 hour race to only get it destroyed on lap 1 because of impatient drivers.
Dunno, i just feel like once the race is a couple laps in the real fun starts and everybody is more near the positions where they belong and the racing gets allot cleaner since the toxic impatient ragequitters will be gone by then. I also notice as a European that racing Americans on road racing is ALLOT more relaxed they are so much more respectful and patient.

Also worth remembering that the incident counter is not a punishment, it's a diagnostic tool. Some incidents you cant avoid and thats why off-track is 1x and collision is 4x. Also, the way the car numbers are assigned, i personally have found to be pretty good way to set reasonable goals and expectations. If you are #26 in a 30car split, just concentrate bringing it home intact and you are already on the plus. If you are #6 then you have chance at top 5. If you are #10 holding p5, and car #4 is chasing you, dont risk it, they probably can take the position, so its not worth grinding your teeth and risking a race ending crash

I used to play that game all the time and the people that I played with were always trying to get newer players into the game; very much so with the mindset that the newer players were assets. They were people that would one day provide real challenge and the future content of the game.

I've had a few races where I have made mistakes and also been the brunt of someone else's misfortune, this is the part i don't like at all. the one thing the game has taught me is that everyone will make mistakes but it how you deal with them that matters. I've found myself saying sorry a lot more often and also trying not to get angry at other peoples incidents. This game will teach you manners lol.

  • @lookaquarter

I've started playing ACC and it's been a tough adjustment. I'm not sure how people get so comfortable with racing and overtaking once you get to the speeds of GT3. I notice my time trials are great but I always struggle working my way through the pack, after getting smashed around in the first corner of most circuits. I always assume everyone around me is quicker than me, and I'm afraid to cause incidents.
A little story to give you guys an idea of what it's like to be a newer/cautious driver in these games now: I tried to force myself to do a team event through RCI to get over some of these feelings, but got punted from behind in the first lap at the chicane on Barcelona, and got spun around on the edge of the track. The car a little ways behind me was coming, so I cranked my wheel to try to move off the track more, and it pulled my car a little closer to the road before turning away. This driver didn't even slow down when he saw me, and actually oversped a little and managed to clip my front bumper as I was turning around. The people from that team were yelling and complaining the whole race, and showed up in the discord after the fact to make all these accusations against me, saying I hit them on purpose and I should be banned. I haven't played since but have really wanted to cause I want to get better and feel like I'm pretty fast for my total time in game, but incidents like that make it really hard to participate.

I found it's part of the fun, I got punted into last on the first lap on the first corner, I somehow ended up finishing first. In cases where I don't catch up, the race is against my own times.
