Even though I went to Hanoi and 昆明as tourist seven years ago but never thought to visit the border, I hope that I will visit the border someday after watching your video prior to my Vietnam and China expire in 2016.
And I have no problem for both languages either.
Thanks for your historic lesson I just learn.

Well, well before any Westerners arrived in Sotheast Asia, the Vietnamese fought against China for independence after hundreds of years of Chinese rule. Because of the long period of Chinese rule, Vietnam has a strong Chinese cultural imprint and before the French Indochina colonial administration introduced Latin letters for writing in Vietnamese, this language was written in "Chu Nom", a set of Chinese characters adapted for use in Vietnam.

You are wrong on the French one, they enforced the new Vietnamese-Latin alphabet, not introducing it.
It was invented the by western's missionaries back in 17th century.

China really wants to build a new railway from Hekou to Hai Phong to speed up goods transportation but it seems impossible with bureaucracy politic system in Vietnam. The presence railway system was built since French colonial and nothing changed after that. Imagine how Vietnam will be without French colonial.
