  • Alright, today it's time to look at 12 scenes from Castle of Cagliostro (1979) by Hayao Mayazaki with TMS Entertainment. This wonderfully paced film follows Miyazaki-san's storyboards to the letter, plussing them all the way with terrifically timed gags and a heartfelt story that balances animated action and acting beautifully. Thanks for checking it out!

I watched this film when it came out. I was a 7th grader in Tokyo, Japan. Hayao Miyazaki and Yasuo Ohtsuka were big heroes for an anime fan like me (there was no term "anime-otaku" at that time).

While Hayao Miyazaki has been highly acclaimed for his auteurism in recent years, I salute you for focusing on the fact he is also an outstanding animator by nature.

Thanks for the comment! Translation to English:
      "oh!
I guess some foreigners have finally realized how good this movie is.
      Hayao Miyazaki's memorable debut work
When Spielberg saw the car chase in this movie, he said, ``I don't have the confidence to surpass this movie, so I won't make it.''
A work full of romance by Hayao Miyazaki
I lined up the day before the release and saw it three times on the day.
      Brochures are kept neatly
When I die, I'll be cremated with you (I won't give it to anyone)
If you haven't seen this movie, don't tell me you like Hayao Miyazaki."

Hi I watched a couple of your Adventures in Inbetweening videos. The visual presentation of your video, the timecode, shot number, annotations, do you do that in Premiere, or is this a program to review footage used in the industry I don't know about? What is it?

    • @8bit_paul

Thanks for watching and commenting! I use Filmora Pro for editing, first recording my markups with Zoom-it in real time, then speeding up and slowing down the video in order to watch it afterwards and give commentary on top of my edit. I'm not able to both draw quickly and talk at the same time so this was a good alternative for me!

    • @MayMay-eh2qr

      What he/she means is :
Hayao Miyazaki's storyboards are godlike, but Yasuo Otsuka, who embodied them, is also so superhuman to the point of absurdity.
(Yasuo Otsuka was sakuga-kantoku (I don't know the proper English translation. A director of drawing ??) of this film. And Kazuhide Tomonaga was in charge of the keyframes for this sequence.)
