"No matter where the catcher is setting up we are setting up on the inside of the strike zone."
I don't believe this to be proper. The slot in my humble understanding moves according to catcher positioning. Our chin should be at the top of the catcher's head and we should be ear to ear to the catcher. If you make it according to the strike zone and the catcher sets up outside of the strike zone then you become exposed and vulnerable to injury. See Pat Hoberg and watch how he adjusts to the catcher, opposed to the plate.

We call the strike zone based on position of plate not catcher. Doing softball I find I am left "naked" behind the plate a lot more then baseball. I set the slot off the plate not the catcher.

@@jeffhembd9471 what do any of your organizations say? So they area with your positioning? I know for me is I ever want to get the Gold games in USA Softball I better follow the mechanics whether I agree or not.

@@actionhero27 It's how I was taught in NFHS baseball/softball. It is what I teach for Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth. We had a high school guy getting concussed and bruised up. One of our senior guys got him to setup in a more protected position and his beat downs decreased. Safety is paramount for all on the field, players and officials. I don't ask my officials to sacrifice their body and I wont work for organizations that want me to,.even if it might be a more prestigious assignment.

@@actionhero27 You are correct on staying in the slot and not moving with the catcher. .I am a 30 year USA umpire. Yes, if you want to get to the GOLD games then you best be following USA mechanics to a T. I've been to OKC 2x to call the golds. Sometimes you do feel exposed when the catcher moves to the outside. For the most part, where is the pitcher trying to throw the ball? Across or near the plate. So why would you want to set up behind the plate. Stay in the slot. An umpire needs to be consistent. I don't mean the strike zone. You need to consistently set up the same, pitch after pitch, to view the strike zone the same each time. You will call a much more accurate strike zone this way. I don't call baseball but NFHS softball has the same mechanics - stay in the slot.
