  • Understanding Umpire Mechanics means understanding how to communicate with your partner. Umpires use Hand Signals to each other so they are aware of the current situation and what will happen when the ball is in play. In this video Jeff walks through the various signals that umpires will use to communicate with each other and remind each other of the current situation.
(I do apologize for the constant refocus from my camera!)
(Please note: This channel was previously called "Umpire Zone" but has since been rebranded. However, most of my umpire-related content is still relevant and I want to keep it available on this channel)

You should add the responses expected from the base umpire - to acknowledge the signal was received

      Good point Greg.
In my association, umpires generally either:
      a) Echo the signals that are given to them as the plate umpire provides them. Or,
      b) Touch the tip of their cap at the conclusion of the signals.
If your association uses others, please feel free to provide them!
