I see this type of setup in my area so often with sewing contractors! They're set up as 1099s but are required to be on location 40hrs a week at specific times, can't work from home or use their own machines, & have ZERO benefits, security, or protections. Really scary when you consider that contractors don't have protections from being overworked or sexually harassed because they are supposedly their own bosses.
Really enjoyed the video Jade was very inspiring as someone, like myself who went to fashion school and has had different iterations of my design career. I really liked what she said about feeling free to evolve her niche. When I first joined FAST not too long ago (5-6 months) I was so fixed on whether to choose to do flats or textile design, do I do Bridal/Evening or Resort Wear? As I've been in the program I have been so inspired by what I see others doing like Andress who offers her service as a Children's Wear Fashion Designer and provides everything from mood boards to flats and textile design. I was blown away and realized I could do the same thing for Resort Wear Brands. There are moments that I even respond to seamstress/sample maker jobs because I have a skill that is useful even though it is not my niche. So I am glad that she has been very fluid in growing her design business, even being a Bespoke Designer. I have always loved the thought of Made-to-Order designs and made an attempt at it early in my career but now that I've heard her experience I feel inspired to revisit it! Thanks!
I am so glad you loved that interview! There are *many* nuances to finding your niche etc, but I am so glad you found inspo in her journey ;) Please come to one of our live monthly coaching calls if you ever want support with figuring out your services 👏

It’s terrifying how much this goes on in our industry! And most people don’t even know they’re being taken advantage of.
Thanks for sharing these knowledge and explaining to us!❤
