Field mechanics are under appreciated by most shop mechanics. Nothing like working in the dirt manure heat and cold plus trying to work without shop tools and equipment. We farm 5200 acres raise cattle and custom farm. We still take pride in our machines and we do most of our own mechanic work . The preventive service on equipment is very important and in most cases when done right and regularly can save time and thousands of dollars. Stay safe and keep up the good work !

Do you recommend other career field than diesel mechanic? I have a lot of back issues and it takes me a while to learn new things. So I’m kind of hesitant to go into this field. Especially since most blue collar guys that I know personally. Usually don’t have patience for someone like me. :/
As someone who has livestock I appreciate that you understand how farming has a sense of urgency and prioritize accordingly. Have a good Christmas and hopefully Santa is good to your pups

My hat is off to you! I'm spoiled, if I can't fix it in 30 minutes in the field I haul it to the shop where I can house it and get out of the weather. After working indoors for so long I can't imagine doing what you do! Your the true heart beat of america!
I did the same thing on our MCI MC8 bus with a 8v71 Detroit. Best thing I ever did. Removed the 80 pound and the MT39 is about 35 pounds and it really spins it over effortlessly. Thanks and Merry Christmas Warren.

Thanks for the tip on the 39MT starter. Delco has a great site with videos and all sorts of information about the 39MT and the 42MT starters. Delco stood for Dayton Electric Company and I believe was one of the Charles Kettering creations.

It is the fact that you acre and understand that any livestock farmer will be more than thankful that someone is prepared and willing to go out to the farm and fix vital equipment such as this feedtruck so that animals can be fed as this year there will be no dealer (for parts) or other mechanic willing to help. (it is likely that no one would be available for at least three days with it being Christmas Day, boxing day and a weekend!!)

I agree with you on the gear reduced starter. I had one fail on me though, the gears are only 'sintered metal', and they broke. Luckily it was replaced- lifetime warranty. I run mine on an 02 7.3L; it definitely cranks faster.

I was a service electrician for 35 years. Always out in the field, worked alone 99.9% of the time. I never knew where the day would find me or what I would see or who I would meet. Every time I would see something that would make me say NOTHING will ever top this, something would. I started my electrical career in Yreka Warren. It was a wonderful adventure.

I am glad that I am not the only one that has to, have different way of starting my truck. I use my welder to power the block heater, get the old thing running.
Merry Christmas to you and yours. Cheers :) Warren, I've said it before. You'd be wise if you added a tank to the compressor in your shop and on your truck. It can double or triple your air capacity. Contrary to belief, the compressor doesn't work any harder than what it already does, in fact, can work less. Just a suggestion is all this is. :)

I moved out of the field after 30yrs out there, I moved in a shop 2yrs ago, I do miss my freedom though 🤠... but don’t miss the elements
Diesel probably be easier on entry level, I think either way you go it’s going to be a brain over load, there’s been a lot of changes since 1986

Used a rotary converter in the granite shop started it with drill with a love joy coupling worked great ran all day everyday
