Accra, Ghana vs Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire

  • Arguably, Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire stand as two of West Africa's finest countries, their only distinction being the arbitrary line drawn by Britain and France. They share not just mutually intelligible languages and similar physical features, but also a deep bond that transcends borders. With a 720-kilometre border, Ghanaians and Ivoiriennes refuse to let the European border divide them. They stand together in times of joy and sorrow, celebrating each other's milestones and mourning together at funerals. This shared camaraderie is a testament to their shared history and culture.
Accra, a city of peace and progress, is a shining example of the rapid development in West Africa. It has opened its doors to all descendants of the Transatlantic slave trade, offering a new home and opportunities. In the past, Ghanaians were known as nomads, seeking better lives across the continent. But now, the tide has turned. Ghana no longer sees its people leaving; instead, it welcomes all of Africa into its vibrant capital, Accra, a testament to the country's growth and potential.
Côte d'Ivoire, as it wants to be called, is a country that has enjoyed stable economic progress with a solid infrastructure. Its economic stability attracted endless immigration from its northern neighbours through the tolerance of former president Félix Houphouët-Boigny. As soon as the father of the country passed, xenophobia took over the peaceful Côte d'Ivoire. Black African I, attacking black African B. I identify as Ivoirien, while B identifies as Burkinabe. The two brothers fought each other over who is the true bearer of the European identity imposed on them.
Fast-forward a decade, and Côte d'Ivoire is peaceful again. It has excellent beaches, five-star hotels, and a plethora of French and Westerners who call Abidjan home. It is safe, has a high standard of living (probably the highest in West Africa), and has above-average law-abiding citizens. I strongly recommend Abidjan.

Correction to your statement about the inexistence of clean pipe born water in Nigeria. Abuja actually has clean pipe born water that's supplied through a maintained dam. However, it only exists in Abuja, and most people aren't even aware. You're legally not obligated by law to tap into it when you construct your home.
So, many houses still rely on the bore hole system. If you do choose to tap into the system, then you get either a monthly or quarterly bill. I'm not sure about the frequency of the bill receipt but I'm confident that the system does exists in Abuja only because I once rented a house that was connected to the city water system

Who do you think is stupid, is it someone who understands how well a country's international airport should be run or is it someone who hasn't done their research to understand how well other African nation's or overseas airport are run in comparison to how the Nigeria Airport is run before putting up an invalid and baseless argument about the fact?
Until you switch from this mentality of defending the incompetencies of Nigerian leaders, including the governed like your self who're co-conspirators in ruining the country, you'll never get things right. Well, I’m a Ghanaian living abroad and truly love the criticism portrayed in your video. I hope you were being honest about it. It seems Abidjan won. Indeed, Accra continues to undergo significant construction and is likely to surpass Kenya's exceptional road infrastructure. Thanks for bringing up the corruption of our civil servants. Ghanaian police are fond of doing that, and I hope the government makes some amends to change it. Ghanaians love beautiful things, so the cars you saw were not for a show-off but rather for their enjoyment. It’s not Nigerians who introduced that lifestyle to Ghana. It's probably a common life between the two countries. Maybe Nigerians use luxury cars to show off, but in Ghana, it’s for fun. Ghana has a long way to go, so I hope doing the same comparison in the next five years will be different. I appreciate your constructive criticism, as long as you are not biased. We want the truth, so tell us where we fall short in your experience, as we are striving to become a better nation. Thank you.

Accra's likely to surpass Kenya's roads? I pray it happens. BUT even if that happens, the rains only need fall for just 30 minutes to destroy Accra's roads and also expose it's poor drainage problems
If we don't construct big deep gutters/storm drains, especially in the kaneshie etc areas to channel rain/waste water away from the roads and into the sea, we'd design the most beautiful roads for Accra but they won't last
The VISION and KNOWLEDGE required to MODERNIZE ACCRA, I'm afraid our leaders even engineers don't have it or can't seem to make it happen

Of the few bold sensible VISIONARY leaders around like Mahama(not to do politics ), the former Accra minister etc, what happened to their transforming Accra efforts?
What happened to Mahama's monthly clean up exercises? The Accra minister who relocated yam, onion sellers from Agbogbloshie to Adjen Kotoku, CLEANED up makola, SANITIZED our spaces, STOPPED Ramsar site encroachment etc what happened to him?

Your English was great, brother, and yes, over 90% of Nigeria has no running water. They dig holes, which are then used to pump water up an overhead tank and, from there, into the house. The water is not fit for drinking. The water on the island of Lagos, which is supposedly the affluent part of the city, smells like poo. After digging the hole, you must treat the water, or you could get poisoned if consumed.
Over 70% of Nigerians go to bed daily without electricity. Urban areas in major cities could get up to six hours per day. One last thing: Nigeria is not the number one economy in Africa. South Africa, Egypt, and Algeria (in that sequence) are the largest economies.

    You're too critical of Nigeria.
Neither Ivory Coast nor Ghana comes remotely close to what Nigeria is economically.
Nigeria has a far greater population and any of these two countries, so the infrastructural challenges in Nigeria will be far greater. For example, Ghana's maximum electricty demand is no more tha 2800mw for the entire 90% of its populace connected to its grid. That's less than what Ikeja, a district in Lagos, alone needs, but current electricity demand in Nigeria is estimated at 30,000mw, and that is just the 48% of the country connected to our grid.
Ivory coast has a maximum electricty production capacity of just 2,200mw. Nigeria's stands currently at 16,000mw.
As for water supply, have you thought of what humungos challenge it will be running pipes through the thousands of streets in just Lagos alone? Not saying that's an excuse for Nigeria's failures, but please cut Nigeria some slacks.

Ghana enjoys a higher per capita income than Nigeria. Gross GDP is not a reliable indicator of a country's financial standing. The GDP per capita is a more reliable measure of a country's economy.
Ghana's 5,134 megawatts vs Nigeria's 16,384 MW are, on average, bigger than Nigeria's, given that it is six times smaller. Côte d'Ivoire's average is about slightly lower than Nigeria's, or pretty much the same.
Tokyo has 37 million people. The largest metropolitan area in the world. Water flows into every building. Shanghai, São Paulo, and Mexico City have a larger population than Lagos, yet water flows into every building.
When a critique, firmly grounded in evidential veracity, invokes anger, that should be a prompt to reevaluate one's epistemological framework as it may be flawed. I appreciate your eloquent and insightful contribution.

Nigeria had a GDP per capita of over $3000 in 2014, just before the current APC government came into power. It should therefore be obvious that Nigeria's present underperformance owes chiefly no the bad policies of this adminstration. That doesn't detract from the basic fact that Nigeria is a far better vibrant economy that both Ivory Coast and Ghana. My main grouse with your unrelenting bashing of Nigeria is that you never seem to want to acknowledge that Nigeria holds far more promise that probably any other economy in Africa, a fact that has been emphasized by lots of experts on the subject. For example, the IMF has projected that Nigeria's GDP could hit $1.8trillion in the next five years

I don't know where you get your GDP information but they are incorrect. Yes, Ivory Coast GDP is more than Ghana but not the amount that you put there. Please my brother. don't mislead the public. The GDP difference between Ghana and Ivory Coast is 1 Billion.
Ivory Coast 74 Billion and Ghana 73 Billion.
GDP in Ivory Coast is expected to reach 74.78 USD Billion by the end of 2024, according to Trading Economics global macro models and analysts expectations. In the long-term, the Ivory Coast GDP is projected to trend around 79.64 USD Billion in 2025 and 85.46 USD Billion in 2026, according to our econometric models.
GDP in Ghana is expected to reach 78.51 USD Billion by the end of 2024, according to Trading Economics global macro models and analysts expectations. In the long-term, the Ghana GDP is projected to trend around 82.20 USD Billion in 2025 and 86.06 USD Billion in 2026, according to our econometric models.
That 85 Billion is what Ivory Coast is expected in the coming years and that doesn't mean they have that Amount now.
For expectation, you don't do video over it and give Assurance because anything can happen tomorrow. And you never know. You can never be 100% sure, what the state of the economy will be in the next few years.
