  • Part two of rescoring jumps from the Ladies Free Skate from the 2019 World Championships!
Here I take a close look at the jumps of Elizabet Tursynbaeva, Kaori Sakamoto, and Satoko Miyahara
*The final calculated scores are based ONLY on the changes to jumps and jump GOE-- I didn't change any PCS, spins, steps, etc.
This is not meant to hate on any skaters, I'm just looking as objectively as I can at their jumps and following the ISU guidelines for GOEs, URs, and Edge calls.
Let me know if you agree or disagree in the comments!

I also want to point out that Tursynbaeva's score may seem low (considering she had a clean quad)-- this is because the step out on the 2A was very costly, as it was supposed to be a 2A+3T and there was no other place to put the 3T. So she only did 2 combos and lost around 4 points of BV, putting her total BV below Alina's and Rika's.

I really think Kaori deserves higher GOEs for her jumps. Her jumps are spectacular and the flow + height she gets is HUGE compared to other skaters. She also uses difficult transitions for her axel, and her 2A+3T+2T comb is just nothing but PERFECT (she really deserved +5 for that comb).

Kaori is one of my favourite skaters! If she hadn't popped her 3F+2T combo, she would've been on the podium. Her 2A+3T+3T combo is just utter perfection and her 3Lo is absolutely gorgeous!! 🤩💖🇯🇵⛸

That one Slovenian judge gave Satoko all +4 and +5 on all her jumps and lowballed all other skaters. Satoko ended up the winner of worlds 2019 according to Slovenian judge. Love that girl, but giving +4+5 on her jumps is criminally overscoring her.

I can’t put my finger on why i find the japanese ladies skating so much more lyrical than the Russians. And i find their landings, even when under rotated, to have such a beautiful flow. I love the solid check and the way their free legs add a little whip to the landings. To be fair, Miyahara is one of my all time favorites, so i am very biased.

Wow i am so with you on this one. It really is hard to put your finger on it. Everything just looks more original, more interesting, higher quality and smoother. Maybe just not so jam packed with all that arm flailing and leg kicking, what is euphemistically called 'transitions'? Is that what gets the Eteri team those extra points? I really don't know. Why are they all just so boring and so not exhilarating to watch??
And BTW i don't think it's Russians per se, to me it's specifically the Eteri school that has the humdrum quality, or rather lack thereof

When do you call prerotation on a Salchow? Tursynbaeva seemed to turn quite a bit on her 4S takeoff.

    • @Yuzutea
      @Yuzutea  Před 5 lety +19

That's a tricky question. Right now the judging system pretty much ignores prerotation, so that's why I didn't deduct anything for her 4S. If anything, she is penalized for not hitting the "good take-off and landing" GOE bullet, and maybe could receive the "poor takeoff" GOE reduction. But that's only if you are being really harsh.
In my opinion, acceptable prerotation is less than 180 degrees on any jump, ideally less than 90 on the lutz and flip. However, there are MANY skaters who prerotate more than that, including many "top" skaters. So deciding to punish prerotation would drastically change the landscape of the sport, which I don't think the ISU will ever choose to do.
TL;DR - Her 4S is super prerotated (270 degrees), but prerotation is just not punished in the current system.

      @@Yuzutea Interesting. Thanks!

    • @florenceflo8864
      @florenceflo8864 Před 4 lety +8

What is deducted is "excessive pre-rotation", not pre-rotation in general. All jumps require a little bit of pre-rotation and some more than others. For example, the lutz and flip are only 1/4 pre-rotated, while the salchow and the loop are 1/2 pre-rotated jumps (that's literally half a jump that you are doing before taking off), but that is not cheating, it's physics... you can't rotate in the air without pre-rotating a little bit before, it would be just a jump up and down, not a rotation. I'm just making it clear that it's physics we are taking into account here since I saw some comments of fs fans that claim how their favorite skaters have 0 pre-rotation on all their jumps which is like saying they are doing all their jumps wrong, but they don't realize it. So, edge jumps require more pre-rotation than toe jumps. That's why people learn first the quadruple salchow and not the quadruple flip/lutz, that half a rotation that you are doing before take-off is really helpful. Also, what @Yuzutea said is super true. Judges NEVER review jumps to check on pre-rotation, but I've never known a time in figure skating with harsh judging on it. But you shouldn't be bitter about it, that excessive pre-rotation can help you for a while and then, later on, become your biggest nightmare. It's just like the saying "what goes around comes around". There is a reason physically you are told to do a jump in a certain way. Bad technique always follows you and will become your biggest enemy one day. Take, for example, Shoma that has some serious pre-rotation problems sometimes, to say at least, and then look at his performance at Worlds this year (honestly, this entire season, even though the medals don't really justify what I'm saying). When you use those "cheating techniques", I feel like you are cheating more on yourself because you think they are helping while you actually have to do more work to maintain a good body position in the air while depending more on the speed of body rotation instead of learning how to use physics and power in your advantage.
*sorry for the long post, I got really passionate about the topic :))

    Hi all,
These are a great start at helping figure skating fans to understanding the IJS judging system! The problem in the debates is that some are looking at the old IJS rules, and others are considering the new IJS rules. As far as I understand, with the newest IJS rules, for the triple jumps, or anything more than a single jump:
------- A clean jump would be the foot landing fully forward in the same position as the initial, fully forward jump take off, without counting any negligible pre-rotation. --------
    1. Anything 1/4th less than fully forward with the toe pick hitting the ice, IS an under rotation.
    2. 1/3rd less than fully forward is no longer counted as an under rotation, it would be downgraded in value to a lower level jump.
    3. The author of the video seemed to be meaning to say that the jump was less than 90 degrees, which would mean hopefully not 1/2 under or more in the landing, but not clean, so it was under in his mind. In the older rules,, 1/3rd under was still an under rotation, while 1/2 under was counted as a downgraded jump.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In terms of jump technique, I recommend looking at these ladies at the peak of their careers:
-- Polina Edmunds (2014 Olympics SP, FS)
-- Yuna Kim (2010 Olympics SP, FS)
In terms of PCS or program components scores, please look at these women at the peak of their careers:
    -- Carolina Kostner
    -- Satoko Miyahara
    -- Sasha Cohen
    -- Michelle Kwan
While we all clearly are biased and have favorites, please keep in mind that for most female skaters, there is rarely one woman who perfectly HAS IT ALL. Due to the extreme hardship upon the body, most women do not have the time to train to perfect all skills and maintain their difficult jumps. Many up and coming female skaters are pre-adolescent girls who train extremely hard to master the triples, triple axel and quad jumps and then simply do not have the maturity to express fully artistically and perform to connect with their audience, to their program music.
With that in mind, one of my favorite skaters of all time has to be Yuna Kim hands down.
With a speed and edge strength that in my mind exceeds many men, her triple lutz, triple toe combination still has a speed, length, height and matchless flow and execution that few women, and for that matter, men can come close to.
While she lacked in spins and flexibility due to her back surgery and miraculous comeback, she more than made up for with the superior quality of her skating skills, that no women today can rival.
Finally, artistically, she truly had it all -- with the heart of a champion. She had the grace of a prima ballerina on ice skates, and the power and speed of an Olympic sprinter in a 100 meter dash. She knew how to give her best when it most mattered, and somehow hit every note with increasing power, passion and love.
She is truly one of the greats in the sport, and inspired millions of girls around the world to follow her example. It will be difficult in our generation to find another women champion like her again.
    Blessings,
    Anita
