The Annular Combustor

  • Construction of the very first annular combustor for the GT50 engine is nearly complete and the combustion rig itself is coming along really nicely.
    This is all happening at quite a pace. Only last week we demonstrated the injection bodies that take the nozzles, and they have now been tack welded into place.

    These rings and that material is especially good case for the newer laser welding techniques, better than TIG for the thinner sections. It is becoming better all the time for that kind of job.

      That was my thought as well. This is a brilliant scenario for laser welding, where you have far lower volume than automotive use cases but actually a higher level of quality control for welds at a price point that is still cost- and time-effective while working on extremely high-tech alloys for which TIG would likely be a nightmare.

    How did you determine composition of the optimum alloys to use in the various temperature areas of the engine-?
