  • This Land Rover was a very difficult vehicle to diagnose and was sold “As Is” at auction because it was unable to be repaired. The ATS eSCOPE Elite & eSCAN Elite were used in the diagnosis.

      I think Bernie should do some consulting with the automakers to help them flush out gaps in the diagnostic programing and engine control systems for ICE vehicles.

    The ATS tool does what many others won't or can't do.
    Great diagnosis Bernie, corrosion was the problem, as were the wrong solenoids.

    LR2 = Lost Revenue Too. I live in the Salt Belt . I have a scope but I am primarily a scanner user, and if no codes and running wacked out, I test power and grounds and always inspect the pcm connectors and try to wiggle the ECM connectors , remove and reseat the connectors a few times times first before busting out a scope. if I feel a PCM isn't working logically. Many ECM connectors are hooded, taped, ziptied, and so miniaturized, that the typical back probe needles are too thick to safely back probe, and wires too small of a gauge to safely pierce

  • @Discretesignals
    @Discretesignals Před 3 lety +5

    I'm wondering if the PCM has an adaption to learn the VVT mechanical differences. As components don't respond as they used to the deviation in timing and phaser performance is learned and adapted to. These usually should be reset somehow using a scan tool function when new components are installed if that option is available. Maybe the PCM from the donor vehicle had a lot of deviation which wasn't cleared out of the adapts, so it was running using that adaption. That would explain why it didn't flag any codes. Seen a 2015 Subaru WRX have a new timing set installed and the PCM kept flagging a P0019. The solution was to replace the PCM because the CMP/CKP variation was learn on the old set and there is no way to reset the variation from memory.

    These land rover or range rovers whatever they are called are a nightmare to work on. I don't even think there is one dealer near me that will work on one. We took one in on trade years ago and the four ways would start flashing randomly when driving down the road. We sent it to a dealer and they said one of the modules in the car has to be positioned correctly in it's hold down bracket or that could happen. I had never heard such a thing but that's what the problem was. We had to send it to a dealer about 200 miles away to get it fixed, how bizarre.

  • @hightttech
    @hightttech Před 3 lety +2

    Wow. Interesting. I wonder if VVT activated during test drive. The current shop installed that ECM, but Rover arrived with a problem; did both ECM's have corroded terminals, or the bad Exhaust VVT valve was original problem, and shop compounded it by installing filthy ECM? I wonder how many hours BT charged for that job. And +100° in variable lobe separation potential is amazing; i recall building hot rods in the 1980's, and the difference between a smooth idle and lopey one might be only 12° from one spec sheet to another. GREAT VIDEO 👍.

    I’m surprised someone bought a none working Land Rover from auction. The only way to successfully flip them is to have a fleet of cars to scrap parts from.
    There’s a garage around me that buys nothing but none running BMW at auction, but he has 50 dead ones laying around at any given time. But the guy knows BMW, last I heard he charges dealerships $250 an hour to do mobile diag.

    a .17 rifle brush works good on some ecms. i was expecting in cylinder pressure test to be performed to verify timing. with a turbo it throws a wrench in if it wants boost to allow the cams to be commanded more. dyno or road test. would have been intersting to see if the cams moved more on the road test.

    "What conditions must be met before a code can set"
    I'm no expert, by far, but wouldn't it be possible for codes to not set, because system monitors are not complete?
    I would imagine that for SOME codes (non hard fault) to be dependent on monitors having successfully completed... ?

    • @jonjon-nc5br
      @jonjon-nc5br Před 2 lety +2

      Great question. There are two types of monitor systems; continuous and non-continuous monitors. Continuous monitors include Comprehensive component checks, Misfire and Fuel system and are running as soon as you turn the ignition to ON position and will run all the time until you turn the ignition OFF . Variable valve timing checks are of continuous monitor, and are ongoing all the time as it falls under Fuel system monitor. Fuel System monitor detects any changes in fuel mixture that may cause emissions to increase.

    What I don't get is why does the computer see only a small movement of the camshaft. Doesn't the pcm use the camshaft position sensor to see the amount of movement. So if the cam moves 50 degrees on the scope based on cam sensor movement shouldn't the pcm see the same 50 degrees of movement?

    Why didn't the amp draw test and voltage test on the pcm show any voltage drop from those corroded connections. Wonder if the original pcm was fine and the wrong actuators were the problem. I have seen some manufacturers won't move the cams unless it's in gear or a speed signal input received.

    I wonder...since the pcm power voltage is reduced due to corrosion wouldn't the amplitude of the scope readings change as well? I know that sometimes if you have bad power/ground feeds to a pcm it will change some pids.

    i'm confused about where Bernie gets that spec for an edge of the CMP pulse coming 75deg before the CKP sync pulse. Is that a LandRover spec? Never seen it mentioned ... Also, did Bernie say that the Intake and Exhaust Cam waveforms for each bank always exactly overlay their mirror waveform on the other bank?? I've never paid close attention, but I'm not sure that's always the case??? Anyone know for sure?
