- The Mimeophon music synthesizer module is a stereo, multi-zone color audio repeater by Make Noise and soundhack, coded by Tom Erbe.
The Mimeophon (from Greek mimeo (repeat/copy) and phon (sound)) is a modern take on various historical sound copying, echo and repeating devices. It allows for Stereo modulations of Time, Space and Timbre of Mono or Stereo sound sources. The Mimeophon is capable of modulating and morphing time scales of repeated sound from micro-sound to note to phrase length while also coloring and spatializing the repeats.
- Full Stereo In and Out
- Color Coded Modeless Algorithm: morph between Karplus, Flange, Chorus, Echo, Looping and everything in between
- Rate continuously controls Repeats frequency within Zones
- Skew lets Rate control Repeats differently for Left and Right channels
- μRate offers dedicated Doppler Modulation
- Tempo Sync for Doppler Free modulation of Rate, create complex repeat patterns
- Control number of Repeats up to and beyond Infinite
- Halo smears Repeats in stereo space
- Color focuses feedback energy for timbral shifts over time
- Rate Out generates Pulses at Skewed Tempos, completing the conversation within the modular system
- Zones may be Flipped for backward repeats
- Hold sound for non-destructive modulation of infinite loops
- Fully Voltage Controlled Time, Space and Color modulation algorithm
- Reasonable power consumption
- Pairs well with Morphagene, QPAS, and X-PAN

Wow, the first half of the video's demos are great, but the latter half is mind-blowing. Some really amazing possibilities with this thing...
Agree. That last patch is some of the most complex and interesting delay sounds I've heard. UGH! I'm really trying not to buy one. I JUST bought the QPAS and I absolutely Love it.
@@RayMcNamaraMusic think of what the QPAS and Mineophon can do together :P Im so close to buying them both!
@@Grauskegg I KNOW RIGHT?!
watching this as i feel it draw closer in the fedex truck
Every year I seem to cycle back into wanting to board the modular train, and every time I end up watching Make Noise videos - wondering how I'll be able to afford it all.
Gotta love the deadpan delivery of “total protonic reversal”. Excuse me Egon, you said modulating the flip would be bad.
We always aim for the flattop 👻

WEIRD!
That jam at the end has me hooked. What a fantastic module.
Amazing module again. Great how it pairs with the DPO and the QPass. Already ordered at Schneiders.
Those drums at the end are pure fire 🔥
I'm just now getting into Eurorack & so far the Make Noise want-list is nearly taking up a whole row already.
I love this module. Make Noise keep doing things right.
That last patch.... Wow. Nicely done.
Just ordered one today. The last piece you played should be released as a track. Incredible!
I actually closed my eyes during that final jam. Extremely spicy, Walker.
thank you!! it was based on the patch "repeater eater" from the manual :)
"Total protonic reversal."
They integrated a Ghostbusters reference into the damned thing.
It is great to see another stereo module with creative time-based buffer manipulation effects.
Hi! I’d like to know about other stuff like that! Could you tell me some other modules?
"Why stop anywhere?"
Sage words indeed. It's great to see you back, btw. Fantastic demonstration, yet again, of the possibilities of this wonderful machine. Happy New Oof!
Thank you again, Dan! Happy new Oof to you :)
Just ordered mine. Looking forward to using it with my Make Noise 0-coast and other modular gear.
I'm trying to save for a second acoustic guitar dammit. You guys always get me. This is a must have. amazing potential.
increible! Tom genio !
Amazing guys - looking forward to
thanks for watching!
Excellent tutorial. I’ll be checking this puppy out.
Have fun!
Spent my Christmas holiday with my guitar hooked up to this thing - absolutely brilliant! (Despite my wife threatening me with a divorce....haha).
You and the wife still going strong Walter?
walter how is you wife
Now I want to know too.
@@blaythessteuer Walked out on me - now I'm officially married to my modular rig.......Tony Rolando is to blame.....hahaha
Awesome! Can’t wait!
i can't either!!
Those drums at the end!
This is craaaaazy!
that's what we like to hear :D
beautiful work on this one
thank you!
Cant wait!
Damn, I don't even own any modular synths but I want to get this just to use with my guitar and Juno.
do it!
12:30 - OMFG. AMAZBALLS!
Ok, you got me. Around min. 12. You got me.
Can’t wait to have it on my rack
crikey, this is NICE
So sick
thanks!!
11:20 is like Coil's Red Birds / Tangerine Dream Phaedra! in the best way :)
First of all, I am so happy the Mimeophon has LIGHTS. The QPAS and XPAN remain dark which is not a good thing in Eurorack especially when you forget to plug them in your bus power and wonder why they don't work. I was wondering what the MP would add to the equation since the Echophon repeats audio quite nicely. But then came FM, quantum mechanics and the inevitable how to turn a gate blip into an excellent organic plucky synth. Big wow. But it gets even better with the tempo synced Morphagene... I once wrote Tom Erbe should design the world's next drum machine. And he did. OMG.
Amazing
Thanks!!
Still the most impressive patches so far in this video
killed it crew!!!
Thanks James!
yes, it's that good
damn....qpas first , then xpan and mimephone , great modules , will get it soon
WOW!
Loving the stereo. Could Rene utilize x y z for moving sound and fx? Also, love to understand more about the distortion. Is distortion controllable or just an extreme output? Thanks!
the distortion created here was by engaging Flip in the shortest Zones (particularly Zone 0), where there is not enough delay time for Flip to engage in the way it normally does (as we put it in the manual, it is a minor limitation in the Mimeophon's time travel capabilities). So it is flipping the Repeats at audio rate with no significant filtering. This creates strange harmonic motion especially when coupled with sound sources that are not running at related frequencies, so modulating Rate (especially while Skewed) and Color opens up kind of a timbral playground.
More than just a delay, this is awesome.
Make noise how are you so good
damn, GAS
Oh FUCK this is cool!
incredible!!! but didn't understand if traditional echo delay + pitch shift while moving the time is possible.
Modulating Rate without Tempo-Sync or Flip engaged does cause the pitch to change during Rate changes, yes. Switching Zones is always an instantaneous change, but most Zones have a decent range of possible Rates for you to play with.
@@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC so when synced to delay will not pitch cause pitch change (which make sense in a way), thank you for the answer!
There's no control called "pitch" because Rate isn't a continuous control when tempo-synced. Also pitch shifting due to changing Rate is always temporary, which is why we call it "doppler" - it's due to the continuous change in Rate while there is sound in it. Once it stops the pitch will stabilize. In other words, it is not like the Pitch control on the Echophon in any way. I hope that makes sense?
@@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC if you had 2 separate delays and modulated them inversely could you fade back and forth between them to get a stable pitch shift?
@@reecedeyoung6595 i don't think so... the apparent pitch shifting due to rate changes in delays is due to motion, would be very difficult to make it static
Any information of the sample rate and bit rate of this module please @make noise ?
I so hope these ship in August. Make Noise killing it again.
still planning to ship in august :)
I am the proud owner of a Black and Gold, but my Erbe, when mix is turned up, kills the volume and power of my DPO. Does the Mimeo do the same with Halo and it the Mimeo a good module to replace the Erbe and Echophon? That would give me room for qpas and X pan, maybe.
Like any Mix circuit the Mix on Mimeophon is a crossfade between the dry and wet signal. You could try patching the Erbe-Verb as a return effect instead if you don't want to drop the dry volume.
what's the IO delay on this like? Like, if you put it thru external modules in a feedback loop at audio rate, how out of tune would it get? (assuming the external modules don't have their own I/O delay)
Not sure exactly what you are trying to do there, but if you outline a patch we could try it out and let you know what we find.
4:29 Percussive sounds are so beautiful! I want to know how it was patched. What's patched to QPAS' audio input? And, is QPAS' Freq CV1 input used as filter freq fm via Optomix?
Gates from René are patched to the QPAS audio input, and yes the Freq CV1 is being FMed at audio rate whenever the Optomix gets struck :)
@@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC Thank you very much! I've been repeating listening to that sounds...
1) take this video back in time 20 years
2) post on the WATMM forum
3) watch a hundred 4PhEx nerdz’ heads explode
question: what is the little window at 8 o'clock on the COLOR knob for? it looks as tho that is there for an LED indicator. but it never lights and there is no info in the manual.
thanks.
There are three possible colors on the faceplate: white, gold, and transparent. The three boxes around the control represent all three colors. We have transparent as the "darkest" with CCW, white as the "unity" at 3:00, and gold as the "shiny" with the Color control fully CW.
@@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC thanks. this module and the Morpha are ACE!

I bought i mineophon today and make a strange clicking noise really annoying me it is normal?

This or Erbe-Verb?
yep.....need! LOL!
bro are your protons even totally reversed
Are you guys electrical engineers at Make Noise? I want to be a part of creating such magic, and want to know what path to take!
This is software. See this conversation between the guy in this video and the designer of this module: czcams.com/video/KziP2Q-fVhM/video.html
Interesting to hear that the founder of Make Noise, TR, is a self-taught engineer … Ben’s interview with him a couple years back is very good : czcams.com/video/uLJuuCbJHKM/video.html
oh man prices are way to high... 400euros! dafug
I like the potential on this module but the base track was annoying as hell. That being said, I'll probably be switching my Morphagene for this. Well done!
hmm, sorry bout that. hope you enjoy the mimeophon! it is very different from the morphagene
I got mine today and it is not working 😭😭😭😭. No sound coming out when 100% wet. This is going to be a horrible weekend 😲 😵 😱 NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
So it's a delay unit on drugs?
Chuck Desylva As opposed to a delay unit with a steady office job and a healthy family life? Yeah, pretty much.
It gets that all the time, but it’s actually a delay unit that’s gotten sober and can now far exceed its wildest psychedelic fever dreams cuz it finally started eating right, finishing things it begins, and has effectively channeled all its energy into learning how to program Unix or whatever the fuck is under its own little hood and is now self-actualizing at proton reversal times the speed of light cubed.
I so want these modules in Softube Modular, please let them code them for youuuuu!
@@tyroneshoelacez3498 why?
Ugliest panels, but incredible engineering! I watch them all!
I'm guessing I can't recreate this panel with a handful of 4000 Series CMOS chips. 😛
Everyone, you're missing out if you don't listen to this with a great pair of headphones!
P.S. At 10:31, my bra unclasped all by itself.
