    Thank you for showing the crew being the cat back from a turtle! Never seen that before. I'm looking at buying one. Had a Supercat or ARC22 with carbon spar. Miss that boat. Never had it go over. The Tornado is intimidating because it looks hard to bring back from a capsize but this vid clearly shows it doable. What a machine.

    Heh, did that once in a Prindle 16, I was on the trapeze, flew over the mast and got slam dunked before the hook came off.
    No damage to us or the boat, so back to flying we went :)

    I was wrong about the "lost board" , didn't realize how smoothly they slide back into the cb case! thanks all, for the comments. (comes also from breaking off daggerboards on small multis, bit sensitive to that...maybe should get a Tornado!)

    Why does less than half of cats seems to have a float tip foam/airtight upper mast or the float bubble to prevent turtle AND to make the capsize levvel a little higher? Are they THAT ugly or bad a handicap?

    • @milkc1
      @milkc1  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi Daniel. The bubbles at the top are only typically found on pleasure craft at Resorts and not used in racing applications due to the weight and windage. They are usually there to assist inexperienced tourist who may accidentally get into trouble - like the two punters in this video 😂😂😂

      @@milkc1 I disagree with you. It is not just for amateurs! You don’t use it during races though you may insist on it being standard equipment no different than wearing a life jacket and I bet nobody can measure any consequence due to “windage” by using one! it is the prudent thing to have on top of a Cat’s mast like any other safety equipment. I deliberately installed a tether ball at the top of my Hobie 16 After turtling twice and losing a mast the first time. I never turtled since that time! That boat rental owners don’t want to lose their boats by installing one, does not make the “bubbles“ something to sneer at!

    What did they do with the center. Board on the weather side of the boat, when turtled?

    • @milkc1
      @milkc1  Před 2 lety

      I put the centreboard away so it didn’t interfere with the righting line. Noting on the tornado it is a centreboard, not a dagger board so it pivots into the case in the hull.

      Thanks for the fast reply. My son & I found a Goegeon made Tornado last month. Wood & epoxy. Beautiful boat & so much fun. It’s only been sailed a few times in its life, in fresh water. We’ve had it in the ocean in Southern California nearly every day. Your video is helpful to us. Thank you!!

    How did they right that boat so easy?

    • @milkc1
      @milkc1  Před 3 lety

      Ben Moore hi, the mast is sealed so it will want to float. Plus the wind was strong and this aids in the righting of the boat once it is facing the right direction.

    • @paulgush
      @paulgush Před 3 lety +1

      They were moving so fast just before they came upright that is seems like they were being pulled by a power boat. I could be wrong, though

    • @nicedoge9593
      @nicedoge9593 Před 2 lety +2

      @@paulgush That's the wind blowing them across the water. Once on its side the tramp acts as a sail and with no hull or board sticking down in the water to stop the boat from slipping sideways, it acts just like a tall raft would in being blown rapidly sideways. Many high buoyancy boats will do this in a capsize when on their side and laying abeam to the wind. The wind also is what helps them here get the boat upright since they are righting to leeward instead of to windward: There is a surprising amount of force pushing on the tramp, and then once the boat comes up a little more, the wind gets under the sail to bring it up reasonably quickly. It takes quicker reactions to stop the boat rolling back over the top of you and capsizing the other way, but this can be a much quicker way to recover, and in windier conditions sometimes the only way where you do not have enough crew weight to counteract the windage. You can see the crew getting ready to grab the windward side of the front crossbar mighty quick as soon as it started to roll upright to hang off that with their weight to prevent it re-capsizing.

    Aaaah. That's when you realise you should have plugged the mast to stop water getting in, allowing it to float. Did it once, never again. Lugging the mast with foam either end, stops it from filling with water.
