Hobie 18 transom # 035 - major clean up
zhlédnutí 654Před 4 měsíci
We found this old Hobie 18 built approx 1977 or 1978 that has not been used in over 25 years. It has accumulated a lot of growth on the hulls and spars from sitting in a paddock in the Australian countryside. We decided to see if it would clean up and be able to be given a new life and hopefully be enjoyed by its next owners. The clean up took place over two days at the Reimagined warehouse. It...

G(l)ory days!
I am a Hobie 18 owner. I would love to learn more about your boat setup and downhall system. Hope you can give me some technical pointers. Thanks, Ray, Austin Tx
Hi Ray, we are happy to help. We have lots and lots of photo albums and explanations on our Facebook page “Hobie 18 Catamaran Reimagined”. Have a look there in the All Albums section for specific item details including the downhaul system.
@@milkc1 Thank you! I will
AWESOME BOAT
Never used name brand gelcoat restorer. I've heard of people using diluted muriatic acid. I always just end up doing a wet sand, compound and polish if I really want it looking nice.
Never thought a film like this existed! As a long time builder and racer of Tornado Class I've heard the folklore of the early IYRU trials - didn't know there was a film.
Hi Kevin, I was fortunate enough to have been gifted this video from the multihull committee at IYRU (ISAF) in about 1997 and had it digitised so the history would not be lost.
Looking great lads
LOVE the Bow for the audience!! Where did you fellows tie on your righting rope, It seemed very hand over all, but its not easy to see when sailing would love to know. Thanks
That H18 grew it's own boat cover, Nice work 👍
Was that some kind of fibreglass restorer you sprayed and rolled on?
First was pressure wash, then bleach and rub with green scourer pad, then roll on Ronstan Boat Wash (it's an acid wash) to remove the brown stain.
Upskirt
What a blast.! Thanks for the action packed video. I miss my old P-16.
❤
Invest in Selftackin jib and let the crew handle the main😊
We all do that from time to time...
They never really looked in control, seemed inevitable.
I miss my Hobie16. SO much fun!! Don't miss those double trapeze pitchpoles tho, man were those scary.....😳
7:52 is when the main sheet operator should have released the main sheet... but he held it tight.
Heh, did that once in a Prindle 16, I was on the trapeze, flew over the mast and got slam dunked before the hook came off. No damage to us or the boat, so back to flying we went :)
They could have got more AIR time is thy had struck it more square .....once i learned Hobies pitch pole like that we called it the sling shot,, way back get high as u can before launch. Fun
40 years sailing cats, still a blast.
I lost a lot of crew members that way.
It was a windy regatta.
Amazing footage.
Takes me back.
yeah done that
I was wrong about the "lost board" , didn't realize how smoothly they slide back into the cb case! thanks all, for the comments. (comes also from breaking off daggerboards on small multis, bit sensitive to that...maybe should get a Tornado!)
Bundy looks a bit younger there...
Cats are extremely stable upside down arent they
It is their natural stable position.
Yep!
Wasn't really a cartwheel, just stuck the bow in stopped and went over sideways. Not nice, good recovery but lost a board...expensive, sorry guys
Where do you see them lose a board?
They didn’t lose a board, Tornado centerboards pivot inside the hull, like a Hobie 17.
Skipper was stoned silly
Smooth work! I have an 18 here in the states. they are getting rarer. Just discovered your channel. Hoping to get some rigging modification tips here.
Hi Ben, all my tips and advice is posted in dozens of albums on the Facebook page Hobie 18 Catamaran Reimagined. Enjoy.
Yes watched it earlier , hit link & subscribed to your channel too ! & commented this was first of video that popped up initially so i commented here about it ! Awesome looking rugs
I have many questions about you reimagined 18’ I have 3 18’s myself . Dagger board cutting & did you do anything to the dagger well ? Redrill hole in the board ,how far down did you cut the board ? They look amazing!
Hi Zach, thanks for your interest. We don’t modify the dagger well at all. We don’t move the top rope hole. We are only trimming the excess off the top of the board above the deck line. If you watch the latest episode on Joyrider TV of Show Us Your Cat you can see how it looks. It’s a simple horizontal cut and filled with gelcoat.
Australian TV is so boring these days. What happened?
"Political correctness" happened: none of us can have a laugh anymore without offending some minority group. Also, "Reality television" happened: It's cheaper to produce..
My old one was there. She was a fast.
Legends !!!
Aaaah. That's when you realise you should have plugged the mast to stop water getting in, allowing it to float. Did it once, never again. Lugging the mast with foam either end, stops it from filling with water.
oooh .old Mate was lucky not to dislocate his shoulder as his arm went around the shroud! Wife and I are getting a hobie Getaway soon. better not let her see this video, she might change her mind!
Memories!
Hi Gonzo, May I ask who was driving that day? Was it Mark Gibbs, Rohan Onslow, Bob Forbes, Rodney Forbes or someone else? I would love to know if you remember. Many thanks.
Hi Mark, I think it was Rodney. Thanks, John

Perfect timing with the music!
I remember watching this live, mainly because of that wardrobe malfunction.

How? I saw a boat cartwheel. I've seen real clickbait.
How is ride height controlled
He bUdy where are the breaks? Budy : I thought You had the breaks !!!
what sort of wind speed is present on the day?
In my younger years, I owned a mess of small cats, the largest being the Nacra 5.8NA. But I never got to sail a Tornado. They look like a REAL handful once the wind kicks up, even with all that beam. In watching this and other Tornado vids they seem prone to pitchpole once the wind gets up. I used to install "chicken" lines on my boats. Basically, a short line (8-10 feet or so) line fixed aft near the rudder and then fastened at the front with a long piece of shock cord so it would sit flush with the hull when not needed. The crew on the wire can hang on to this line with his aft hand. This prevents him from taking a trip around the forestay when you stuff a bow. Are these prohibited on the T? Looks like Tons of fun.
Hi Steve, nice to hear fro.m you. We had the chicken lines on our boat. The Tornado is only prone to capsize if you push it beyond the limit, which we were often doing. You can see my use of the chicken line in the video called Capsize, Capsize, Capsize. Enjoy!
