This song cover preserves the tragic material the hack writers scrapped from their initial material. Just like the importance 001 had in her appearance in 02's flashback disguised as an ugly failed experiment, "Parasite 001". This was how she got the code name long after the start of the Parasite experiments. She was initially there to kill 02, the fairest of them all, and instead found herself caring for her. Creating the picture book of her own past as a gift to her daughter.
The song fits with 02 and Hiro. The beast and the beauty.
And 001 and her darling. The underground beast (Think of a blue Ariel who lives under the sea) and the Prince of the surface (Think Eric).
"Won't you come my way? My self-restraint is crumbling. It's just me. So don't you be afraid." (The POV character, 02/001, is trying to reunite with their lover and losing their control over it.)
"A flightless bird was dreaming" (Hiro and the Prince) "that it could touch the sky" (Freedom for Hiro. Heaven for the Prince). "But that blue color's changing to a bright shade of red." (Hiro losing his freedom from Papa. The Prince losing his literal humanity from developing bright red skin via 001's blue blood.)
"Somebody's knocking on my door. I cover my ears at the sound. Could it be you I'm waiting for or is it someone else?" (The lyrics relate more to 001 when the klaxo-human war was starting. She wanted to see the darling she abandoned so long ago. Possibly waiting for her own eventual death to see him.)
"Darling, destiny is racing through my body." (The blood in 001 and 02 transforms their lovers into beings like them. 02's role is taking out her mother. 001's role is killing her darling. Both are destinies arranged by the witch we've seen on Papa's side and in the picture book. Yes, the pointy hat fucker.)
"World in motion. Finally. Could this be love?" (02 and 001 are 'revived' with motivation from their love.)
"I just want a taste. I'm sorry if that's strange. But it takes two to find love and to kindle that flame." (02 and 001 use taste to identify their lovers.)
"We hold each other close to heal all of the scars flesh in our hearts." (For Hiro, it's literally his heart. Time to drop the ball here for the Prince. Papa specifically has this prayer for him revealed in episode 2, "May Papa never thirst. May Papa's HEART be filled with peace for eternity." The witch is a single person before the shitty VIRM retcons and he's the devil looming over Papa's shoulder. Papa himself, before the retcons, is secretly the Klaxofied Prince in disguise. He's evolved into humanity's Priest King. He can still thirst for water and his heart is scarred from his heartbreak of abandonment.
The Prince in the fairytale went out of his way for everything to find his wife before he eventually lost his humanity.)
It's a bittersweet love song of reconnection that tells a more compelling story than the anime itself.

I love how "kiss of death" literally resembles their whole relationship, especially their first kiss it's more like signing your death. And how the more Hiro rides with her the more he dies. Like damn vruhhh. Oof im rewatching i want season 2
if they did a lot of good writing, I think they could pull off a very good season 2, they kinda dropped the ball at the end of the season, but it is VERY much recoverable as long as you have good writers. My personal idea is their reincarnated versions eventually remember their past lives somehow, and (after a timeskip obviously) they have to work together to stop virm for good
I'm still not sure why they decided to stray from the manga for the ending... that would have been way better and people wouldn't be left with absolute depression

I agreed that it sounded great, but not that it sounded just like the original. If she wanted that, she should've sung it deeper. HYDE produced this song and he's known for his deep singing voice, which is reflected in the original of this song too, even if he wasn't the one singing it, you can definitely hear his style in the song.
I agree too. I think it helps that she sort of sounds like Zero Two’s dub voice. Especially when I hear darling.
If you wanna hear an English cover where the singer really nailed the original feel, listen to Lollia's cover. The backing track in that version is awful, but she nails the vocals. That's not to say this version is bad, tho--it's just not quite the original feel and AmaLee sorta took it and made it hers.

Hope this makes you feel better, I'm also in pain listening to this, but I will never forget the beauty of, Darling in the FranXX. I hope a season 2 comes out, I just want to hear "Darl...ing!" again. I hope they reboot the last 4 episodes of the anime to make a season 2. By reboot, it means changing it, although it is a really low chance but... why not mind trying? It wouldn't hurt, and I'm not afraid of being hurt. We can all do this together and wish and pray for a season 2. Love you all.

Nothing in this world could've prepared me for this. The FIRST time I saw this cover I just sat there silent with my mouth hung open in shock and I was INTENSELY crying. Just. Streaming. Dude the ending of this show destroyed me for like 2 days I couldn’t get over how sad it was and I could t stop thinking about it because I hate change and I’m very nostalgic so when a shows Focus is that things change i couldn’t stop thinking about how that applied to me. Also very pretty voice appreciate an English version of a badass song that I can understand that is as good as the original.

All I can say is read the manga for closure, it seems the ending is going another way, where they both live, the last part releases on the 26th so we will see, and if it goes as i think it will, im hoping they will release a movie to change the ending, and follow up with a S2..
