I think zeroing in on his cordial/friendly relationship with his cronies could be a refreshing take on someone running around Gotham. Just a dude who can hypnotize people by cartwheeling and his idiot friends trying to make some cash in the harsh streets.
He's one of those villains that has so much potential, but we already have Scarecrow, so he's barely used or seen anywhere else. Like in Batman Beyond and The Batman 2004 series, the only reason they used him because either Scarecrow is long gone, or the infamous Nolan Bat-embargo.
Man I completely forgot he was in The Batman, that episode was kinda mid ngl
Spellbinder was scary in Beyond because the tech advancement made him a force to be reckoned with. Terry's rogues just hit compared to Bruce's
Interesting I never knew he had a older origin I thought he was an original Batman Beyond character thank you for introducing me to this Sasha.
I 1000% also thought Spellbinder was a Batman beyond original.
I first saw him in the 1978 Superman story. I has no idea he started out as a Batman rogue.
@@studogable ditto.
@@studogable That's his secret. Everyone fights Batman at some point.
"Or rich people that they know in Terry's case." Clever woman. Very clever. Saving that bit for a video I hope.
Headcannon: After being put into hypnosis by Spelbinder doing cartwheels, Batman is primed for further hypnosis any time he sees the costume. In this primed state, any similarly wheel made from spinning limbs/blades is enough to trigger the hypnosis.
(Using the psychological/neurological definition of priming)
I really didn't know Spellbinder. My first reaction was that he looked like a villain who could easily have been in the 1960s Batman TV show with Adam West... Easily perhaps, except that the costume is quite complicated to sew, and it would have been hard for an actor to do that many cartwheels. But think of the '60s camera work that could have been done with some op art.
"For what is a cartwheel, if not a circle of terror?"
Just one of the many reasons I never miss one of Sasha's videos.
I feel like hypnotizing someone so they die of shock would be the same as shooting them in the eyes of a judge.
Whenever i see someone acknowledge the great mouse detective, it makes me feel happy :)
Sasha always gives me a sense of ease and inner peace that a CZcams channel hasn’t given me in years. Every time she uploads a video, I just get so excited. Not a lot of people do that.
That third appearance of Spellbinder in Beyond had me fooled as well... previous episodes had Terry simply not care if a villain died or not (looking at you pseudo-Kraven) so him killing someone as crazy as Mad Stan wasn't that far fetched for me. Somehow Stalker and others survive so... lucky Terry.
Batman’s Bat Book is so tiny....
How does he update it...
Does he have Atom write it out in “ant-writing?” 🤣
What is this?! A Bat-Crime-Book for ants?!
It needs to be at least--twice as big!
@@angryspork610 I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.
The wildest aspect of Spellbinder's costume for me is the large circular target right over his heart.
Also, the Impostor Mad Hatter from 1956-1981, later dubbed Hat Man is an interesting development to cover. When is Jervis Tetch not Jervis Tetch?
Choosing 'The Great Mouse Detective' for the scariest clock fight... truly, Sasha is a person of great taste.
Jim Steranko was also making some use of op art over at Marvel in the late 60s - particularly in his Nick Fury stories.
The "Bat-Book of Crime" scene is hilarious! I literally laughed out loud.
I love that they even added a text box pointing at the tiny book to make sure we didn't miss it.
What's great is that while Dipsy and Doodler sound like themed henchman names from the era of the Adam West TV series (like when all of the Penguin's thugs were named after different fish), they also work as street-level criminal nicknames: Dipsy would be a pickpocket and Doodler a master forger.
I was looking forward to this video! This is my favorite villain from Batman Beyond, purely because when he framed Terry and got arrested instead of saying something like “I NEEDED TO GET REVENGE!” He was just like “yeah, it was really easy.”
Truly, a circle of *terror.*
(also yes more Batman Beyond stuff, I love Terry!)
I always thought that Spellbinder was an original creation for Batman Beyond until you educated me, so thanks for that.
"...it's hot in here..." and you switch to a fuzzy sweater? ???
What timing! I just discovered this character today when I was reading Batman #336. I initially thought he was Count Vertigo, but then saw the name "Spellbinder". And now I have this video giving me the background. Perfect!
I originally thought Spellbinder was an original villain for Batman Beyond.
Then I saw a different iteration show up in "The Batman" a few years later, one that leaned more toward mental abilities than future-tech or a tailor's nightmare.
Watching this reminded me that at the inception of the "New Look", Sheldon Moldoff drew Batman's chest symbol with the yellow part circular to represent a bat against the moon. When it appeared oval from a staright on front view you could asume that this was due to the slope of Batman's chest. That the symbol was forshortened. However, other artists and the costume worn on the TV series made the shape oval as standard. As the moon is never seen to be oval it never made sense.
Batman Beyond was soooooo far ahead of its time. I'd love for the animated series to either be continued or rebooted. Continuation, preferred. But, this many years later, a reboot isn't all that unreasonable.
Circle of Terror? More like Circle of errors. Then again, Silver Age comics in general are just all weird. There are whole Saturday morning cartoons from the 80s with slightly less bonkers plots than Silver Age books.
I was all in and spellbound from that jacket lol. It weirdly thrust the Saved By The Bell theme into my noggin.
I would love if they took the batman beyond 2.0 and the rest of the continuations and made a continued animated series with them, the stories are so good
Spellbinder sounds like a character perfect for Sascha to discuss XD
Love the Spellbinder and absolutely adore your occasional foray into mostly-abandoned Silver Age supervillains. They must be remembered!
worst clock fight...Castle of Cagliostro: Lupin III.
That is to say best clock fight however most gory
His costume gives me Grant Morrison era Doom Patrol vibes.
4:59 Oh no, Batman's being attacked by the Iron Sheik!
I’ve never been early to a video of yours before. I’m excited
Youre hilarious! Great video!
You are hilarious. Thanks for your hard work.
Batman's tiny book of criminals needs to make a come back.
This issue came out during the era when I stopped buying Batman comics , because they where matching the tv series campiness. I resumed when a friend & fellow geek gave me a copy of The Killing Joke
Always love seeing your videos on obscure-ish comic book characters :)
Yay, new video🤩🤩
They're not just circus people... They're CARNIES!! MUAHAHAHAHAH...!!
It’s bold to claim anything is the strangest thing Batman has ever seen.
Save the clock tower! Save the clock tower!
man Batman used to be polite "You have to do a series of Cartwheels for your power to work? ok but this better be good!
I think the clock tower battle between Batman, Catwoman, & Ragdoll in THE BATMAN animated series was better than the one in the Great Mouse Detective 😎
2:22 I'm just... how'd "medical history" at the time even know if it was a dream that caused the heart attack? It's not like they could ask 'em afterwards.
Yes, please, Sasha. Make more Batman Beyond videos. That was my favorite TV show, back in the day.
I am glad that you made this video. After watching your video about Superman's glasses, I thought that The Spellbinder was one of his villains instead of being a part of Batman's Rouges Gallery.
3:40 Fighting Batman with a fidget spinner
Things I wish I had said when I was 8:
Person: "Hey, if you die in a dream, you die in re life"
Me: "How do you know?"
Batman transcends time and space when he's in full justice mode. Hence the clock?
We need a panel of Batman punching MC Escher
A whirlpool, but no quicksand? I'm deeply disappointed.
Love that I was also thinking about Rattigan
Your silver age Robin voice is great!
Yes! Wish granted! *grabs popcorn and sits down to learn more about Spellbinder*
Just rewatched batman beyond recently, that show was so good in its day and mostly still is. Totally didn't connect the stupid pinwheel spellbinder with the beyond one til you mentioned it.
Sometimes implications are much darker than the what's in the context. Which makes what he could do scarier than what he's doing
Batman Beyond, yay!
Loved that Spellbinder episode with Max becoming addicted to the VR.
Favorite Sasha Quote: Batman becomes clocked eyed" "murdered"
Showed my copy of this beauty two Vids ago , Love the old stuff
"what does that mean, I don't know what that means" 😅😅
Golden/Silver Age Writers: "I wonder what kind of legacy our stories will leave behind?"
Future Sasha: "Silver! And gold (content for my channel)! I'm rich- RICH!"
Yukon Cornelius: "Hey, that's copyrighted!"
Gasp! I got it! It was Spellbinder whom put Batman in a trance so he saw himself having fun cookie fights with all his kids!
Nice shirt. I love the mismatched sleeves. This villain was totally new to me. We did a unit on op art in 7th grade art class. I made one that was sort of like a cube interior, but because of a mistake, it started to look like bats, and I ran with it and wane it that the squares were turning into bats. My parents probably discarded it. :(
Clockeyed is almost certainly a play on cockeyed.
Cartwheels to hypnotize? That really seems like a lot of work!
Instantly thought of Great Mouse Detective too. Nice
Spellbinder should have teamed up with Prof. Milo or Dr. Zin Zin (2 other old obscure Batman villains). There could have been some good mind game stories. And throw in the Rainbow Creature just for the heck of it.
I will no longer ever complain about silver age villain names being on the nose when in the real world William C. Sights had an exhibit about optical illusions william SEE SIGHTS
Fear the fidget spinner! Take cover from the mesmerizing op art!
2:06: I always appreciate mention of the best Sherlock Holmes movie, no matter how brief!
So I guess that the little Easter egg in the video for your next villain to cover is: CLOCK KING!!
To think, with that jacket, we are never more than a couple of cartwheels away from being in Sasha's hypnotic thrall.
oh look, a sailboat.
Spellbinder costume is right up
there with the Sixth Doctor’s.
Finally a logic to that weird costume. I do love ol #6 though :)
@@mattdotsko As do I
Batman beyond!? Hell yea
For what is a huge rotating barrel, if not a CIRCLE OF TERROR?
Yes! More Batman Beyond content!!!
This was the error that made me stop buying Batman comics , which I did until a friend & fellow geek gave me a copy of the Killing Joke
This man's ability is S P E E N
Would love to hear you talk about Batman Beyond, the comic books or the show, but honestly both, both is good.
i love that she changed out of her super wacky sweater into an almost equally wacky one
Spellbound by me, Zach Wise! If you like rpgs or choose your own adventure novels... I wrote Spellbound available on Amazon!
Shoutout to the uber90s "Lady Spellbinder" (aka Spellbinder III?) circa Underworld Unleashed -- I was glad it seemed like they were gonna use the name, but nope, false alarm there too
Great Scott, man! Just think if he'd had a modern day fidget spinner??? There'd have been no stopping him. The loss of life alone would have been catastrophic!!!
Perhaps Batman was having a flashback to the fight with The Joker on a clock tower from the Batman and Robin daily comic strip (April 14 - 21, 1944, reprinted by Kitchen Sink Press). Actually, these daily comic strips were surprisingly good. Did you ever get a look at them?
I used to be able to do that... cartwheel hypnotism
I think I like this outfit more than the simplified-for-animation Batman Beyond version. Makes me think of Dazzle Camo.
Be careful of this villain is going to spell on you
I think we might need an episode on how at the end of Justice League they made Terry into Bruce's son through science! Stupid chosen one, birthright crap.
4:14: So…what's the majority of the Batmobile's front end for? It looks like they can access the engine from that little flap by the windshield. Is it just to make it completely un-maneuverable?
I do love that coat!
So a clock, a whirlpool, and a spinning tube at the circus where people come out to attack him… I didn’t realize silver age Batman was so afraid of circles. Maybe the Joker should carry around a giant novelty lollipop and Batman would be too scared to go near him lol
Most Silver Age villain's origins be like
It seems Sasha has fallen under the Spell of the Spellbinder.....
Requesting CrazyQuilt video!
I'm going to watch the Great Mouse Detective tonight....
haven't seen the video yet, but I wonder if she is going to talk about the second Spellbinder who got her powers by making a literall deal with the devil to actually gain supernatural abilities, which included killing the OG Spellbinder.
Just as a head up if you don't know, the second spell binder wore pretty much only a black thong-bikini and had a pink jean jacket while she had the Lara Croft sunglasses and hairstyle going, but coloured in pink. and the onyl way Bats could beat her was that he actually let himself get controlled via exo-skeleton by Tim Drake (because her powers didn't affect cameras)
Holy Clockeyed Batman!
I had to watch this video again, because a new version is showing up in Batgirls. He already has creepyness potential in that, but I also hope he's gonna do some cartwheels.
I remember the Batman beyond version was very interesting and pretty dangerous. Love these weird Silver age villain Origin videos hey are there any villains with weird Origins that weren’t from the silver age ?
There's the Ten-Eyed Man, a bronze age character.
Always thought the spell binder was the Batman beyond version of the mad hatter. I didn't realize he was his own character.
I'd love 💕 more Batman Beyond stuff.
