  • This is an unboxing and test of my new M48 Tactical Tomahawk by United Cutlery. I was Impressed with the amount of steel in the head of the hawk, but a little letdown with the sheath and handle.
    This is in no way a video for or against the M48 Tactical Tomahawk, just my personal experience with it.

    As soon as I realize it was your video, Mer, I watched it, I really enjoy your video, and I do have a United older hawk, we use it for throwing practice in camp, over coffee, it's still in one piece.

    I'd take Molle over leather anyday, Kydex is obviously a stronger option. It's also gonna add another $40-$60 onto the price tag. The sheath this product came with is superb in my opinion. Fits into the belt well, protects the wearer, and for weighing next to nothing is also very weather resistant. For $40 you can't beat this damn thing.

    I'm impressed the spike held up so good when hitting metal

    I'm honestly a little divided on the inside. I really want to buy one of these (big fan of the edge/spike combo; already been thinking about what I can do with that), but every comment section on it is literally split 50/50 between "it sucks" and "it's awesome," with just a few saying "it's average."
    As a straightforward, unbiased response, would anyone (not) recommend this for me?

      As someone with a range of weaponry and experience in owning multiple tomahawks aswell i would definitely grant this to be a good item to get your hands on. So if you do go ahead and get this fine piece of work, Enjoy!

    Really like that you where not afraid to use this on a dense metal to prove axe can hold up. Just was wondering though how well it imbedded in a target when thrown? And how well does it stack up in sharpening or edge retention?

  • @A_Very_Hairy_Canary
    @A_Very_Hairy_Canary Před 10 lety +14

    why would you completely dull your spike by hiting a metal sheet like 1/4 inch thick

    • @mer171

    • @A_Very_Hairy_Canary
      @A_Very_Hairy_Canary Před 10 lety +2

      understandable....but still I'm sure it wasn't meant for metal

    • @jackblack7827
      @jackblack7827 Před 10 lety +2

      Notice Thee
      United Cutlery advertising shows the spike penetrating metal, thin sheet metal, so it is meant for metal just not quarter inch thick, but I found the test useful because it showed the strength of the spike tip when hitting solid metal...

    • @A_Very_Hairy_Canary
      @A_Very_Hairy_Canary Před 10 lety +2

      I'm sure they were just showing its strength not telling you hey this is meant for metal. like a knife commercial will cut through a soda can but its not meant for that.

    Nice review the M48 does seem like a good deal for the price. Would be interesting to see how the M48 does at basic camp work, like splitting wood, making feather sticks and stakes, etc. It kind of looks like a miniature Trench Hawk...

    I purchased 3 of these Tomohawks and two have broken on me. The head is great, but two handles have clean snapped from throwing them say a couple of hundred times each at a tree. It just takes one miss throw and that can be the end of it. Just need to make my own handles out of a tougher material and this will be a great weapon.

    • @mitchelll899
      @mitchelll899 Před 9 lety

      Don't buy sog I have their fast hawk and its junk the handle is thin kryton and the edge is extremely hard to sharpen the point of it is dull and too thick to sharpen without a grinder and its the same steel cr123 stainless steel less of an edge width as well. This m48 is nicer that it has a sharp point and it has a wide beard to help hit the target and the voodoo hawk is $65us even on amazon unless you buy it used. The m48 also uses a common wrench tool to tighten the sog hawks use a star wrench harder to find and their more costly had to buy on for furnace work and to repair the sog hawk that loosened after three target hits

    • @dgrichard8271
      @dgrichard8271 Před 9 lety

      You bought from the wrong person then cause my fast hawk is top notch it bent a little after at least we'll over 300 very rigorous throws. Have to be careful with amazon sometimes the products can be fake learned that after buying my SEAL PUP

    Allot of things wong with this test. Not meant for metal. Doesnt matter what handle you have it will vibrate hitting metal. Doesnt matter what hatchet you have hard weatherd wood it wont go through well. Not a real blade person in my mind. Probly the type that would hit the edge of a knife on a rock and be surprised when it broke

    This is the worst tomahawk you can get, the handle breaks easily. The sheath is about as good as a cardboard and I would never recommend anyone to buy this because it is prone to breakage leading to safety issues. I say save your 40 dollars and get your a full tanged hawk. As for breaching, a tomahawk is for disabling a vehicle not breaching into one. A simple glass punch to smash through the glass is all you need to get into a car.

    • @mer171
      @mer171  Před 10 lety +1

      No, first off, you need a better understanding of physics, the 30 foot sheet gave a springing effect, that takes out some of the penetration power. Second I chose it with the springiness to place more stress on the handle to see if it would take it, as well to see the penetration. Third, any harder would have probably broke the handle...
