Gerber Downrange Tomahawk Review - Actual Use and Abuse, tactical tomahawk

- The Gerber Downrange Tomahawk. There have been a ton of videos about it, and pretty much none of them have actually even used the tool. Well here it is, I've been using and abusing the Gerber Downrange Tomahawk for awhile now, and it's been great. I've been beating it up so you can rest easy knowing that yours will be able to handle the abuse when it's needed.
The Gerber Downrange Tomahawk is a great piece of kit to add to your bugout bag, get home bag, or keep in your truck for emergencies. It'll be able to handle pretty much anything you throw at it... and it'll look awesome doing it.

This is one the most comprehensive product reviews, I've ever seen. Thanks a lot for making it.
So, here's a badass story. A year ago I moved to the city I now live in. I needed cash so, I put a pistol on consignment at my local pawn shop. While there, I saw a NEW Gerber Downrange Tomahawk for sale for $180. I've been in there a dozen times since then and every time, the tomahawk was sitting there. Waiting. Today I went in to look at lever action rifles and again, there the tomahawk sat. Long story short, $75+tax and I now own one. Not bad, considering it's $285 on Amazon. I'm absolutely psyched. Especially after watching your thorough review of it's toughness. This will be with me through the worst of the zombie apocalypse for sure. HaHa
Score! I just picked one up at my pawnshop for $50
wade patterson
LUCKY!!!
U 4 real ? LUCKY BSTRD!
Gawd damn
For $300...no way but for $50? That is a deal.
Noice!
Great to see this tool in use. I still dont quite see the money value given the materials in it, but I love the design and practicality. Great 4x4ing tool if you put an edge on it!
lol chasing the chickens😂😂😂
Gotta keep em inline. ;)
HILARIOUS! 😂😂😂
+Last Line Of Defense lol
+gotdrift8 it was lol
Last Line Of Defense What tent is that in the background at ~03:19?😊
I've used the pry bar end to dig a hole for a fire it. This thing is a beast. I did however bust the top bolt off some how while splitting wood. the G10 handle was jarred enough at the top. The handle is still in one piece, just needs a replacement bolt.
What you said is exactly what I had in mind. Keeping that attached to your get home bag. Just a good solid tool to help with whatever you may run into. It was good timing too to be able to test it out on all the different surfaces in you're bathroom. Its a glorified hatchet so of course it goes into wood but what about other elements you could run into trying to get out of harms way ya know? so way to put it to the test!
Looks great. The MSRP IS CRAZY though
It would be great if you put in a "worth the money vs competitors" rating. Since you did have a plethora of axes, I would enjoy seeing alternatives and comparisons. Perhaps with your optics planet budget expanding you can compare two different opticsplanet products (i.e. two different red dot sights).
I just got this ax for a bug out bag and i have read reviews as well as did alot of research on this ax. but this video showed this ax is damn near invincible thanks for doing this video.
Thank for doing a durability review on this. I have been on the fence about this product. Gerber products are hit and miss sometimes. I was also worried about the handles but they do seem durable.
The handles definitely held up to a lot more abuse than I thought they would. I figured after a few direct tree shots, those things would have popped right off - but they are holding strong with no signs of letting go.
Excellent review of product. Appreciate all the real abuse you did to the item. I'll be subscribing and using this video again for further research into this product. Thanks a lot!
Just wanted to share a couple video ideas- 1. Appendix IWB carry vs the 4:30 IWB carry. 2. Tips for new concealed carriers.
That price is highway robbery. I mean they didn't bother to sharpen it.two hundred for 420 and g10
420HC is actually good for an axe or machete.
And as for it not being sharp..... I own a file, I own stones. I can sharpen it myself, not a big deal.
Sᴏᴛᴀʟᴇᴅɪᴢ for the price, one ought to give a fuck.
The price is still highly absurd. It might be good. No doubt, but for below 100 USD you can get a Gränsfors axe which is an amazing brand. Besides. That steel for that price range is another thing you should note. While good it sure isn't any of the more expensive steels.
420 is junk, 1095 or similar are what's good for axes, and for the price of this bull shit it should fully be 1095 or atleast 1055.
CanAmRydr I’m a professional knife maker (shepherd Knives on Instagram) recent metallurgical data proves what we already knew. 1095 is actually pretty terrible for axes. What you’d want is something like cpm3v or z-tuff
Nice to see a review where they have actually used the thing they are supposed to be reviewing. thumbs up from me
I have had my eyeon one for a while but they seem expenisve and outta my price range.
(horror music overdub for the tomahawk chasing the chickens scenes) "SCREECH SCREECH SCREECH SCREECH !!!"
You should check out The Maxx Axe by The Forrest Tool Co.. I bet you'll like it.
it hits with less percussion power than a traditional wood handled tool.
Very cool although a little high dollar for me as I really don't see myself using it. Although, maybe someday it'd be a nice addition to my bag.
wow i noticed you have also a Fiskars. What do you think about it? Here in Finland its very popular and most used, mostly because its good and made in Finland
I don't understand why they'd leave the "blade" so dull. I know it's for breaching, but why shape it like an axe, call it an axe, and then put no edge on it? If you want blunt, that's what the back end is for.
I have one and actually use it for camping. I put an edge on it and it splits and chops very well.
i work in construction and we use axes to chop channels in brick walls for wiring and even to cut thiner rebar if there is a need and there is no grinder and for some reason my boss loves to buy 10$ made in PRC 100% disposable garbage and boy does it work well now if you ask me what is the best tool for this work on a budget i would say a Estwing Rigger"s axe if you need a small pry bar weld it to the top or the bottom cut the handle and weld the head to a pry bar and one bonus i see on a estwing is it has a rubber handle so if you decide or it happens that you hit a live wire up to ohhh lets say 400 v you should be fine but it is not rated meaning if you get zapped estwing is not responsible for it also cutting live wires will leave nasty dents in the edge (what i think that protects this tool the most is the price i dont think that there are a lot of folks that are abel to pay 200$ for a tool that they are gonna beat the living shit out off )
Just kind of wondering, how well this works just like as a regular axe, might be a stupid. But it is what it is
Can someone explain why people cover there liscense plates, you can't cover it in public, I don't get it???
Hey LLOD what and where do you get your tac pants I like the ones you were wearing in the video. Great videos by the way.
Crye
Good review. Would have liked more information about how long to sharper, how well it held an edge, etc
What brand of pants are you wearing in this video?
I would like to know this too!!! I was literally about to post that. The Camo pants w/ the built in knee pads it appears
@@Champions360 Crye Combat Pants
That Tomahawk cost 249e in Finland. Its impossible to buy by thr every day man
Thx for your awesome review. Hard use like that is what I love to see. I would like to have one of these hawks but the price is prohibitive for me. I recently tested a very similar tool made by HX Outdoors for like 55 USD. It is not as pretty but offers the same type of functionality.
Wear and Tear Can we get a link please?
@@devinisreal9356 Sure: czcams.com/video/ChCce9yhCY0/video.html
so young mikey. lol
What about woodland survival? As in good on tree limbs or trunks as im looking for a all place axe/tool
So if its not sharp doesnt that mean its just a very expensive crow bar / wrecking bar?
Looking at this product today in NZ, cheapest i can find is $580 NZD wtf... I'm not paying that..
I bought one a while back. It is a great tool.
Would it be good for chopping down small trees?
I'll just stick with my estwing for less then 70 . and I can guarantee hundred percent more reliable
Now that's what I call a review No Holds Barred great job!!
Sent this to my wife with subject line: Father's Day Gift :)
haha, would be a great gift!
finally a decent review! lol.
Agreed. Most reviews of this I've seen feel like they're just reading the spec sheet and handling it right out of the box.
how dole is it what flaver of dole is it????
You should do a review on the camillus sin tomahawk I bought one and really like it but I can’t find anyone who has done a video review about it on CZcams you could be the first I would like to see a stress test done on it so I don’t have to break mine lol
can u check out the boker tomahook. little closer to my price range and super interesting
Been looking for a review on this thing for a long time and you gave us an awesome one! Thanks!
Glad I could help!
hey dude, I was lookin at this for a lightweight bug out bag in an urban environment. Do you think you could make your way through a normal wooden door with it? Either by hacking or by prying or both?
Can you tell whuch of axe/tomahawk is BEST??
I cant find the thickness of the steel. Does anybody know how thick it is?
9:45, dexterity: 5, strength: 100
if push came to shove, in a cqc situation would you be able to do damage with the unsharpened blade, with a good, strong swing, aiming at, like the neck or ribs?
@@adamharris7376 no I've never used a blunt object in a fight. Most people are smart enough to stay away from a 6 foot 2 man with a handgun anyways. I ask purely out of curiosity's sake. I would never even use something this awkward in a fight. I have my 1911 and if that fails, my Gerber infantry or one of my various folders. Failing that I can still snap necks rather easily
Nice. I've had mine since they first came out. My brother was a dealer and gave it to me for Xmas. I would never thrown down that much cash for a half-weapon/half-toy item. It's been through it in the past three years, though, and has taken all the abuse I could dish out. Good stuff.
You have a solid collection. Would you recommend this or something like the chogan/lengee tactical tomahawks?
Aleko Culp Check out the Lagana VTAC tomohawk.
*chickens Trauma caused in this video*
Super cool. Always looking to add sweet gear!
Does anyone knows a cheaper alternative?
hey brother, great vid, could you tell me what pants your wearing?
Wow what a nice straightforward video. Subscribed!
do you have any muzzle break vidjas up yet??
Seems like a good tool, but tbh for the price it should be better. Unfortunately with gerber you're buying the brand not the tool it seems like...
Chicken thing was hilarious! LOL
Knowing what you know now. If you had to spend the money yourself to buy it; would you?
Kind of a personal question, because I think it really depends on how much disposable income you have, and how much you'd see yourself using it. I think I would though.
420HC for 300. Nope. As for the design, I'd swap the blade for a spike.
Good review man, keep them coming
Where'd you get those awesome cameo knee pad pants?
Crye Precision makes them. They're pretty expensive but there are some rip off companies out there like Semapo Gear which are made in South Korea with US fabrics.
Nice job, the chickens didn't look to scared.
Because its duller than a butter knife out of the box.
just subscribed, trying to help you get that brand ambassador next level!
Gerber got the idea down, but the execution...
I think it only appeals to the GI Joe crowd tbh. Buy a Gransfor Bruks axe and a pry bar and save your money
Eh, it's a different tool with a different intended purpose than a Grans
if that tree was already dead, why did you pitch a tent right under it?
To take advantage of the 20 other live trees surrounding it
took a beating like heck
::opens wallet::.....nice video! You have to a truck tour/review soon! I see you have the TRD 4x4, mine is the same but in silver. Living in flat Florida not much chance to use 4x4.....might have to go up to the mountain cabin soon.
Yeah, truck gear / vehicle edc video is maybe the next on my list...
i broke the sheath and i lost the little strap. lol. i can't get anyone to let me breach their car or house so... yeah.
Great video! Thanks
I found mine in bush
Quality review bud
You forgot to use the bottle opener. ...tisk.
Still an awesome and thorough enough review. Thanks for sharing!
Haha, i didn't even know it could be used as a bottle opener - but it definitely crossed my mind and I meant to try it out...
Where did you get the ERDL M81 pants?
These are actually Emerson pants, my cheap crye knockoff work pants.
Last Line Of Defense Emerson? Do u have a link or the style name???
They could at least given it a cutting edge
you can breach a door with this thing btw
Its $310 here in canada. worth it
What pants @1:48???
looks to be crye precision, I can't remember the full name even though I have a pair but the m81 woodland last time I checked was not being made except by rip off or custom shops.
I remember you telling me wanting to buy the tomahawk.
Haha yeah, it's been a long time coming!
Good video, but you could've wash it at least a bit.
Not Sharp ? For that price it should be shaving sharp and hold an edge well...
If I'm paying $200-400 for hawk, it better great quality, like an RMJ...
Reason that it doesn't come sharp is that it's technically a 'breaching tool' - and the dull edge I guess must go hand-in-hand with that. Not sure why, maybe for some department use, etc. Totally agree though, I feel like it should come with a sharpened edge.
For the Price, yeah, it should be sharp.
Not that hard to sharpen something, though.
no... but its time consuming, why would you pay with you time?
*****
Because I have a lot of time to spare.
09:45 rabbit
Hmmm still can see myself busting thaf while doing whatever it is thats killed or damaged way to many tools axes... tomahawks....machetes.......prybars............hammers...........................even a fiberglass driveway marker
I really need to learn what is and isn't appropriate for doing shit in the woods
*W A R F A C E*
2:12 All my fellow blade enthusiasts/smiths give me a like for the edge of that blade
daaaam where can I get woodland cryes like you? lol
nice
That's hot 🔥
Holy shit dose anyone actually use it to breach anything.
Herschel Wright if you were in the armed forces or police mebe. It's like a combat knife, tons of people buy them, but not to put through the ribcage of someone
AIRSOFT907 I was speaking as in the review videos. I am and I do. It's not a bad tool to have with you.
Herschel Wright ah, I see
Nice axe indeed! But what a ripoff price therefore not buying it.
Looks like you were hitting the tile without wearing eye protection. Sketchy
Lol how many cargo pants do you have :D
all of them!
oh god the escape from tarkov flashbacks
lol
NOT THE CHICKENS !!!
You lost me at $200-300. Totally not worth that
Copy of winkler's design
