500 Greatest Generals in History: 400-301

- I created a query that looks at every battle article in Wikipedia and identifies the military commander who won the battle.
This video shows the 400th to 301st military commanders that won the most battles.
List of battles won by general: docs.google.com/document/d/1Z...
Rules
• Battles are included only if they have a Wikipedia article
Methodology:
I used Wikipedia as a directory of battles:
1. I created a query with Wikidata Query to get the list of all articles tagged as "battle" by Wikipedia. This gives me about 12,000 battles
2. I downloaded the data that is included in the top right hand table of every of those Wikipedia article. I did it for the following versions of Wikipedia: English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Greek, Turkish, Serbo-Croatian, Japanese, Danish, Norwegian, Slovakian, Dutch, Polish, Hungarian, Czech, Hindi, Hebrew, Basque, Bulgarian, Romanian, Catalan, Finnish, Swedish, Vietnamese, Persian, Indonesian, Korean
3. I cleaned up the data on Excel to remove double entries :
4. I created an index of countries with their predecessor states:
Guys this info based on Wikipedia. Thus, Suleiman the magnificent and Mehmet the conqueror are not accurate. Mehmed led more than 12 campaigns which he won as he became Sultan in a young age.
That's not where the inaccuracies come from. If you'd bothered to look, rather than blindly slamming on Wikipedia, which tends to reflect the historical consensus on these subjects, you'd have found that the article on Mehmed lists all his victorious campaigns. The problem is evidently with the query used to extract the information.
Another error here was the inclusion of T. E. Lawrence, who never held the rank of general or its equivalent. His highest rank was colonel. (This list clearly also includes heads of state who commanded armies in the field, admirals, tribal chiefs, and so on, which is valid enough.)
It's more to the point that merely counting the number of victories without considering the opponent (how equal the match was, what difficulties or disadvantages were overcome, etc.) or a general's other roles that might not be reflected in victories personally achieved, such as devising strategies, is at best a very approximate measure of a general's greatness.
But so what? It's an interesting series anyway, despite its faults.

How could Fatih Sultan Mehmet have won only 4 battles?Sultan Suleiman fought even more war than Mehmed
very true i think
In Moldova Ștefan The Great loose 4 battles and won 40 battles. He ruled in Moldova by 1457 to 1504 --- 47 years and he had 44 battles!!
In western Europe was battles with 500 soldiers against 600 or 700 soldiers . In Moldova or Valahia cam 100 000 or 120 000 soldiers Turks for conquer. In Time of Vlad The Impalier cam 250 000 Turks, The most biger army of medieval time and Vlad won with 35 000 soldiers !!!

There are many good generals in history. But we have to interpret these generals not by the number of battles won, but by the size of the war they won.
yeah, for exaple cortés will always be more important than other generals shown in this list
@@francomilazzo8277 peter the great made Russia a superpower
Totally, according to this, a General who won say five battles with overwhelming advantages on his side, but did nothing with it, is better than a General who won 4 battles, but beat overwhelming odds, and pressed home the victories. Pericles for example, only win 4, but they were emphatic victories against a stronger opponent, and he pressed home his victories to establish the World's first democratic state.
I have rarely ever been so excited for a video on my life
I am just so thankful to you for making this list. I have always wondered who the bets generals in history were

Informative as fuck, from Wikipedia. And its aren't showing battles won/lost ratio xD
For all the turkish guys who complain about the rank of suleiman and mehmet ii, there is just the battles that have a wikipedia pag. If you want your generals to be more known you just have to create pages about his battles

Indeed :)
Mehmed II and Suleiman I definetely won more battles than that
Of course! Because Suleiman conquered lands in Asia, Africa and Europe. He can't get these lands with only four battles. Mehmed is more than 4 too. I watched another video of this channel and I seen "Timur: 8 Battles Won". What the fuck? He won more than 20 battles only in India. So he won more battles than 20.

Make it like this: Battles participated/battles won
How can you put some general with 4 won battles over another with 4 won battles too?!
Kill ratio can be a good measure
W/L ratio?
Of course, this is a fun video but obviously flawed due to bookeeping and other factors.
For example, up to this video there hasn't been a single Portuguese general, yet in a quick wikipedia search on its first king alone i found 7 battles already:
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_S%C3%A3o_Mamede
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Ourique
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Cerneja
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conquest_of_Santar%C3%A9m
pt.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batalha_de_Sacav%C3%A9m
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Lisbon
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Santar%C3%A9m_(1184)
FreeMo !!! Win to loss ratio and intensity and significance of battles won. A general who wins a battle against a more powerful enemy while outnumbered is in my opinion greater than a general who wins a battle against a weak or outnumbered enemy.
Because some battles may be more significant than other and could mean bigger conquest dumbass

First battle that he lost was the siege of Cetatea Chilia (1462)
The second was the battle of Valea Alba (1476)
2. Suleiman had 13 campaigns, who the fuck knows how many battles took place in those 13 campaigns??? could be 15, 20, 10000.. but not 4.

The absolute majority of generals are representatives of European nations, a reason to think who is who
Divide et impera Most of the battles that happened outside of Europe and Asia in ancient times have no accurate records of them so they aren't represented here. Only verified battles and information based on Wikipedia is included. One great African general (king) was Shaka who actually defeated the British when they attempted to colonize his kingdom by he's not considered because he was not in Europe
There are many generals aren’t in the lists but I think xerxes is the best in the list
