Injured koalas sit in washing baskets and receive care at makeshift Kangaroo Island animal hospital

  • Animal rescue teams on Australia's Kangaroo Island give medical care to several koalas as they battled to save the lives of the animals injured in wildfires.
    Video shows injured koalas having their paws cleaned and bandaged.
    Australia, famous for its pristine beaches and wildlife, has been fighting bushfires since September, with fires killing 29 people and millions of animals, and destroying more than 2,500 homes while razing an area roughly a third the size of Germany.
    Intense thunderstorms with heavy rains dampened bushfires on Australia's east coast on Friday, to the relief of exhausted firefighters and farmers battling years of drought and granting a reprieve to the organisers of next week's Australian Open.
    Government agency Primary Industries and Regions SA (PIRSA) said 42,727 sheep, 1,152 cattle, 6 horses and 52 other farm animals had either been killed or euthanised due to their injuries on Kangaroo Island alone, according to the RSPCA and local media reports.
    RSPCA South Australia said one field tent on the island was caring for more than 100 burned koalas.
    "It's the first disaster zone I've been to and it's overwhelming when you realise the vast majority of koalas on the island have lost their habitat and a significant number have died in the fire," RSPCA South Australia's chief veterinarian Dr. Brad Ward said in a written statement.
    "It's gone from a situation where there was probably an overpopulation of koalas a few years ago, to now where they're under-population - providing a habitat for those that are recovering will be tough," he added.

      absolutely spot on! Also many people overseas wouldn't know that last year lithium was discovered on Kangaroo Island and mysteriously a month later the local authorities called for a mass culling of koalas on the Island! Six months later, fires raged, even in coolish weather. I and many others believe this to be a deliberate act. The truth will reveal itself in the end but right now the priority is to save the poor suffering animals.

      @@TamimLB... bellabana is absolutely correct ...the fire season starts in Queensland during August and goes south as the country changes from tropical subtropical savanah temperate and finally.,alpine..,,if u r an Austrlaian u would already be aware..if..u come from another land i hope I have enlightened you...now u might be able to work out a connection to arsonists. ....during high fire danger periods police and rangers heavily police parks camp grounds picnic spots and those caught lighting bbqs campfires etc are charged with lighting fires. .,.it therefore becomes fashionable to sieze on those stats for political purposes real fact may be one or two arsonists ...after the arsonist argument fell flat the same denialists started on hazard reduction the current fire chiefs in all states put that to bed very smartly as did premier of Victoria who stated he was never going to order the voluntary burning of native forests and alpine meadows just for the sake of it...if u hail from overseas it may be of interest that our Alpine snow area is larger than Switzerland. Snow season runs late May /Sept. .Prolonged drought all over set up a very dry country . unstoppable fires with to 60/90kmh winds that spewed ember storms 5 ks ahead of main front with frequent wind changes resulted in miracle saves but caused havoc with large losses of fighters and innocents
      with dusastrous results...the fire near to me on Kangaroo island burned for just over a month..in NSW due to much higher rainfall the countryside is far more lush on some bad days they had over 100 fires going ...Australia has a land mass about the same as America our population just over 25million. Finally in my state the police pay special attention to those who have been convicted of actually causing arson ...on xtreme fire days they receive visits and surveillance.. as most states have similar laws i guess much the same would be the practice elsewhere....as i write this news is coming thru of heavy rains in outback Queensland. .best wishes..

    Such a bitter sweet moment here.. sad to see so many babies suffering, but so happy to see the humans get together. No matter the price they pay to save these animals lives and pull together as the human race. I feel so helpless here in the US as we get loads of rain in Hawaii. I think of Australia as I pray they get some enough rain to put these terrible fires out. I’ve been following this tragedy since the first day I heard about it. My heart goes out to you all. I wish I could close my eyes and come out to volunteer. I would love to be a part of this. God bless you and your families along with these poor animals. Prayers for you. Much aloha from Hawaii

      Camels are an introduced species and there's more in Australia than anywhere in the world. They can survive longer in drought so numbers are being culled to protect native species. Its been going on for years and happens the world over.

    • @TheMichaelStott
      @TheMichaelStott Před 4 lety +3

      @RumbleOfDrums fires are not driving the Camels into Aboriginal land. Drought is. Australia does export healthy Camels to Saudi Arabia but it's limited by how many the Saudis want to buy for breeding stock and the health. Camels are an introduced species, they have no natural predators so there is nothing natural controlling their numbers which is causing an imbalance in the ecology. It would be great if we had a much larger export business to more middle eastern countries but many of them are at war and we can't get the export deals. No one else has made proper bids for export either. Live animals have to be maintained in a healthy condition pre transport, during transport and go to a place where they will be taken care of. Camels here are destroying water holes and revegetation programs because their numbers are out of control. In a drought this means native animals are being affected along with farmers live stock. Balance your morality with rationality. Don't control the Camel population and we loose endangered native species, ruin our already drought ridden areas and wreck people's lives.

      One little difference between camels and koalas, koalas are a threatened, if not endangered species after the huge numbers lost recently, camels are not threatened as a species in the slightest. Also koalas are endemic to Australia. Camels are not. I don’t like any animals to be killed but if culling them makes less native animals die, it has ro be done. Also, kangaroos are culled in large numbers because they cause issues too. So it’s not just introduced species.

    The koalas are so cute- It is a tragedy what has happened. My heart goes out to all the animals and wildlife. Nature is our most precious resource and we must start protecting it and recognising it as sacred. We belong to the earth, -the earth does not belong to us. Im so happy to see these people helping the animals.
