- Animal rescue teams on Australia's Kangaroo Island give medical care to several koalas as they battled to save the lives of the animals injured in wildfires.
Video shows injured koalas having their paws cleaned and bandaged.
Australia, famous for its pristine beaches and wildlife, has been fighting bushfires since September, with fires killing 29 people and millions of animals, and destroying more than 2,500 homes while razing an area roughly a third the size of Germany.
Intense thunderstorms with heavy rains dampened bushfires on Australia's east coast on Friday, to the relief of exhausted firefighters and farmers battling years of drought and granting a reprieve to the organisers of next week's Australian Open.
Government agency Primary Industries and Regions SA (PIRSA) said 42,727 sheep, 1,152 cattle, 6 horses and 52 other farm animals had either been killed or euthanised due to their injuries on Kangaroo Island alone, according to the RSPCA and local media reports.
RSPCA South Australia said one field tent on the island was caring for more than 100 burned koalas.
"It's the first disaster zone I've been to and it's overwhelming when you realise the vast majority of koalas on the island have lost their habitat and a significant number have died in the fire," RSPCA South Australia's chief veterinarian Dr. Brad Ward said in a written statement.
"It's gone from a situation where there was probably an overpopulation of koalas a few years ago, to now where they're under-population - providing a habitat for those that are recovering will be tough," he added.

God bless & help Australia, the people & wonderful animals. I think of them & pray for them daily here in the U.S.
Thank you Connie. My thoughts and prayers are with you too with all the 'natural' disasters taking place there ❤

Poor little sweethearts, I love our native animals in Australia and it breaks my heart to see them hurt.
Yeah but you dont care about the camels you all shot.

@@fivegoldstar6811 I guess that would apply to humans too. So next time you get an illness, disease or sustain an injury, don't seek any kind of medical help, ok? After all, if you can't survive on your own we won't be seeing you around.
Sweet, beautiful...creatures....Im literally in tears right now. Thank you to the rescue team.
I can't express how happy it makes me seeing people help animals like this and I wish I had money so I could donate.

Thank goodness for all you wonderful people who are rescuing, treating, loving, and feeding these beautiful unique animals. ❤💕
This is so heartbreaking to watch😥. Thank God for the rescue workers. Prayers for Australia🙏
KOALAS are such cool, laid-back animals.
I'd like to invite all of them over to my place
to chill on the sofa & eat chips and drink strawberry soda.
1hourOfLove I like that idea so much!!!!
That's the thing. For wild animals they seem pretty comfortable with people.
brodriguez11000 I wish they weren’t so cute and defenseless, it makes the whole situation ever sadder.
Invite me over too then. Love those little koalas.
I've read koalas often caught chlamydia tho
Bless you for saving the precious animals ♥ ♥ ♥
They have the most adorable faces, it's heartbreaking to think of how many have lost their lives 😔
30000 Koalas died on Kangaroo Island alone. 2Billion native animals died nationally.
This is a world tragedy. I never had friends in Australia until the internet. It makes me feel this even more because of the people from there that have shown me love, prayers going out.
So sad there suffering. Thanks for helping them. God Bless!👍😁💝

Vous méritez tous des médailles !!!! C'est beau cette contribution , merci 1👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
One of the worst heartbreaking tragedies in ages, but also some of the best sides of mankind I’ve seen ages. So so much respect for all these amazing people helping out!
Every time I see this I keep crying. Wishing I could help more. Bushfires are a problem but the Australian government has also contributed due to land clearing coupled with poor forest management.
absolutely spot on! Also many people overseas wouldn't know that last year lithium was discovered on Kangaroo Island and mysteriously a month later the local authorities called for a mass culling of koalas on the Island! Six months later, fires raged, even in coolish weather. I and many others believe this to be a deliberate act. The truth will reveal itself in the end but right now the priority is to save the poor suffering animals.
Try again. Not the Government but the Greenies who stop councils and state governments in keeping areas cleared. And people not doing the right thing to protect themselves. Also dont forget the fire arsonist. As an ex volunteer fire fighter for 30 years, I been there and seen it all and everyone is quick to blame the Government
Mav F Oh for Gods sake not the Greens argument again. That myth has been debunked time and time again.
@@brunot7176 No it hasn't. Perhaps it's all sorted in your mind but out here in the real world it most certainly isn't. We are not getting fires of this severity in WA because we have controlled burns. Climate change, if that's what part of the problem is, does not recognise state borders or ideological purity. So what's going on over there that's not going on over here?
@@Mav_F Liberal and Labor state governments mismanaged fuel loads, the Greens were not in government. Thanks for your work as a fireighter
Thank you for helping and caring for them. I can’t be thankful enough for people like you. 🙏🏽✨💕
To all the people working so hard to save them, we are so amazed by your selflessness 🥰 Australia we are humbled by the way you come together and your hospitality to all incoming volunteers. God Bless you all!

Thank you so much for all you do to save the lives of these precious animals! I can't afford a trip to Australia to help out, and I can't donate any money, so the best thing I can do is keep the people and animals in Australia in my prayers. I just pray that the fires will be put out soon and more and more lives can be saved. Keep up the good work. You are all angels here on Earth.
Thank you ❤
Sending love to all. Heartbreaking to see innocent wildlife suffering. We need to take care of our planet.
My thinking is that folks in Australia will make a recommitment to these animals once the fires are put down. As bad as it is, I think they will come back stronger! Never Give Up!
There is no choice. Koalas are now functionally extinct. Another major koala area is now on fire. It never seems to end.
@JannieofOZ they are functionally extinct. There are areas now where the local population has been wiped out.
@JannieofOZ According to my research, they are functionally extinct. More than 30k are estimated to have died. They were at risk, prior to the fires.

Aww shame, how could someone be so cruel to hurt such adorable creatures 😍❤️Protect them for me🙏
The bushfires on Kangaroo Island were caused by lightning strikes, so I don’t know why you think someone was cruel to the Koalas. There’s been a lot of lies & misinformation spread online by trolls, right wing climate change deniers that are claiming it was due to arsonists which is simply not true. According to Australian CSIRO scientists, & the Fire Commissioner less than 1% of the current bushfires were caused by arsonists, listen to the experts not the trolls!
bellabana If it was caused by lightning then the lightning must’ve covered the whole of Australia. And I know for a fact that a storm can’t get that big. Only an person who follows people who don’t believe in global warming will believe that.
@@bellabana it was caused by arsonists 4 people already got arrested.
@@TamimLB... bellabana is absolutely correct ...the fire season starts in Queensland during August and goes south as the country changes from tropical subtropical savanah temperate and finally.,alpine..,,if u r an Austrlaian u would already be aware..if..u come from another land i hope I have enlightened you...now u might be able to work out a connection to arsonists. ....during high fire danger periods police and rangers heavily police parks camp grounds picnic spots and those caught lighting bbqs campfires etc are charged with lighting fires. .,.it therefore becomes fashionable to sieze on those stats for political purposes real fact may be one or two arsonists ...after the arsonist argument fell flat the same denialists started on hazard reduction the current fire chiefs in all states put that to bed very smartly as did premier of Victoria who stated he was never going to order the voluntary burning of native forests and alpine meadows just for the sake of it...if u hail from overseas it may be of interest that our Alpine snow area is larger than Switzerland. Snow season runs late May /Sept. .Prolonged drought all over set up a very dry country . unstoppable fires with to 60/90kmh winds that spewed ember storms 5 ks ahead of main front with frequent wind changes resulted in miracle saves but caused havoc with large losses of fighters and innocents
with dusastrous results...the fire near to me on Kangaroo island burned for just over a month..in NSW due to much higher rainfall the countryside is far more lush on some bad days they had over 100 fires going ...Australia has a land mass about the same as America our population just over 25million. Finally in my state the police pay special attention to those who have been convicted of actually causing arson ...on xtreme fire days they receive visits and surveillance.. as most states have similar laws i guess much the same would be the practice elsewhere....as i write this news is coming thru of heavy rains in outback Queensland. .best wishes..
They are so sweet and harmless
Like two little teddy bears 🐨🐨

Such a bitter sweet moment here.. sad to see so many babies suffering, but so happy to see the humans get together. No matter the price they pay to save these animals lives and pull together as the human race. I feel so helpless here in the US as we get loads of rain in Hawaii. Why do they have to look so cute😭
Big Thank you , wonderful people!!!
Same way 🐪 Camel's innocent animals deserve kindness like 🐨 koalas
They shooting camels
Camels are an introduced species and there's more in Australia than anywhere in the world. They can survive longer in drought so numbers are being culled to protect native species. Its been going on for years and happens the world over.
@RumbleOfDrums fires are not driving the Camels into Aboriginal land. Drought is. Australia does export healthy Camels to Saudi Arabia but it's limited by how many the Saudis want to buy for breeding stock and the health. Camels are an introduced species, they have no natural predators so there is nothing natural controlling their numbers which is causing an imbalance in the ecology. It would be great if we had a much larger export business to more middle eastern countries but many of them are at war and we can't get the export deals. No one else has made proper bids for export either. Live animals have to be maintained in a healthy condition pre transport, during transport and go to a place where they will be taken care of. Camels here are destroying water holes and revegetation programs because their numbers are out of control. In a drought this means native animals are being affected along with farmers live stock. Balance your morality with rationality. Don't control the Camel population and we loose endangered native species, ruin our already drought ridden areas and wreck people's lives.
@bob morane yeah same for humans 😔
One little difference between camels and koalas, koalas are a threatened, if not endangered species after the huge numbers lost recently, camels are not threatened as a species in the slightest. Also koalas are endemic to Australia. Camels are not. I don’t like any animals to be killed but if culling them makes less native animals die, it has ro be done. Also, kangaroos are culled in large numbers because they cause issues too. So it’s not just introduced species.
Thank you for saving these beautiful creatures
THANK YOU SO MUCH😘😘😘GOD BLESS YOUR HEART 😘😘
May God bless everyone
Thank you to the people working on the poor animals. Well done!
The koalas are so cute- It is a tragedy what has happened. My heart goes out to all the animals and wildlife.
