  • These koalas are returning to the wild after Australia’s wildfires.
Dana Mitchell owns Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park, along with her husband.
Her team is nursing koalas injured by deadly wildfires.
“We’ve released moms and joeys, young females have joeys in pouch and to see them go back to the wild, is just amazing because the next generation is going back into the wild to help repopulate. “
The joeys have suffered less injuries.
“They were more on mom’s backs so if mom’s been climbing up and down a burning tree. She’s copped most of the injuries.”
The population has been almost wiped out.
“Prior to the bushfires it was estimated about 60,000 koalas on the island and now after the bushfires they are estimating between 5 - 15,000.”
Now, the koalas face a new problem. The wildlife on Kangaroo Island are not getting enough food.
So the RSPCA set up temporary feeding stations until vegetation grows back.
There’s been an outpouring of donations. The park has received supplies from around the world.
"It’s just been overwhelming the support and generosity from around the world,” says Dana.

Is this Kangaroo island? It's just devastating to think that it lost 75% or more of its entire koala population. Thank you for your important work. Please continue. I adore koalas and a trip to Australia to hug a koala is on bucket list.

the concern is to know if the forests are safe, so that the fire does not happen again, which devastated the kangaroo island. I believe that the safe place is the sanctuary, or leave in space with trees in specific places, far from burning and from dogs.

Don’t dump the food into one pile. Spread it out over and acre and let the animals search for it by smell and sight. Keep their survival skills going otherwise they will just become domesticated.

Wtf is a koala? I know "bear" is what they're referred to...but I don't get that impression at all. More like a sloth/monkey/owl hybrid. They're kinda creepy! Lol

Wait you seriously dont know what a koala is? Its an animal that originates from Australia. They are alot like sloths and look like bears.

@@bitchlasagna5897 no! Lol. Of course I know what a Koala is..but I'm saying WHAT ARE THEY? Like species wise. Idk why they're referred to ass bears because they definitely dont look like it. I remember koalas being a lot less ugly and weird according to stuffed animals lol. They're frickin weird as hell. I forgot all about them prior to seeing this.
