I never even thought about the fact that Virgil not only has to walk all the way back alone, but has to spend the rest of eternity just chilling in Limbo. At least there are people to talk to I guess so he's not entirely alone but it's still depressing

Oh dear. My mind instantly went to "will he even get back?" Beatrice didn't ask for him to be saved, only to walk with Dante and, now that his job is done, Virgil doesn't have the "I'm on a journey from god" line to hold any power over the demons who would get in his way.

This one hurts so many feels. Vergil's solemn departure hurts deep, but the line "God tends the garden of Eden to be just as it was before the fall just in case humanity abandons their sins and want to come home" made me misty eyed at work.

As for forgiveness, that is a gift anyone can receive by simply asking. It's a standing offer.

Yes, Dante's writing does "improve" as he ascends to heaven. It is on purpose. Hell is characterized by unelegant, simple, unrefined expressions. Purgatory's language is more curated, more elaborated. Heaven's language is the closest it gets to pure poetry. It is more elevated and beautiful.
When studying this is high school, hell was reserved for 1st year, purgatory for 2nd year, heaven for 3rd year students. That's because it gets harder and harder to analyze and understand. Specially heaven, you really need to have some sort of translation next to it. We have multiple versions of the comedy, from less "adulterated" to almost completely translated. I remember our version had the original script on the left and a modern italian translation on the right.
So you're not imagining that Dante's writing gets better:D

Dante’s ideas and skills definitely were developed during the comedy, improving over time is natural for writing.

@@paulrosa6173 Personally, i'm italiagnostic; i'm open to the concept of an omnipeninsular entity, and I do believe that city-states have existed in a boot-shaped region of the world at one point, but having looked into the matter there's just not enough evidence of a government, or at least one that's currently functioning.
I honestly love the fact that Inferno was all Dante gloating about how the people he didn't like were suffering in Hell because they took life for granted, and the ending of Purgatorio is Beatrice going "Dude, you're doing the exact same thing they were."
As much as people rag on Inferno for being "Biblical fanfiction," the fact Dante wasn't afraid to cast himself off as a coward and a hypocrite says a lot about his integrity as an artist.

Comedy was written over the course of several years. So it's possible Dante either mellowed out some while writing this, or always intended to be shown to be more of a jerk while in Inferno.

As someone who isn't really religious, I did almost get emotional at the notion of God maintaining the Garden of Eden, our original perfect home, in case we ever wanted to return. There is something very touching about that, like a father keeping his child's room ready in case they ever came to visit.
Like the prodigal son story, where a father waited for his son to come back home.

His reaction to Dante’s take on God’s Love perfectly shows what these concepts do to the human heart, I have so much respect for this guy for keeping that in the cut. As a jaded Christian, this was so important to me. Thank you.

great vid, as always. As an italian in his 20s i will give you a bit of context about the relevance of the divine comedy in modern day italy. in every school in italy, in middle school you are introduced to Dante, then in every high school (no matter if scientific, classical, techincal, ecc) you will study every canto of the Inferno, and it takes years, and in some schools you even study the Purgatorio and the Paradiso. Also, Dante published the divine comedy in Florence in episodes, every canto was a different episode, and it got people in florence hooked, he was the original netflix! also think of it not in a litteral way, the Inferno was basically a diss track against his political enemies. Also, his version of italian (because at the time italian was not a universal language for the italian peninsula) became the foundation of modern standard italian. This stuff is the litteral backbone of italian litterature to this day. ah, also, my elementary school was called Dante Aligheri, i just remembered now while writing this, lol.

Hey, don't mean to force any ideas on you or anything but if you're reading this reply, its honestly a great idea to put some thought into Christan ideology and beliefs. Dantes work is fiction, but it is based on some very real ideas. Try saying a prayer or two and read some of the stuff in the New Testament and you will be blown away about how God's love can change your life. Also, if you believe that God can't be real because of science and evolution, just look down at your hands and consider how improbable it is that those things can exist out of nothing without a guiding force, heck even the most basic Cuellar functions are incredible and shouldn't be able to exist by themselfs. Our conscience and all the things that go into you being able read this reply are proof in itself of God's Love.

I consider myself agnostic, and I plan on heading into a STEM field often populated with atheists and in some cases antitheists, but I don’t like to look at it that way. The way I see it, god and science are equally fantastical. Both have large gaps we don’t understand. The difference is that science is measurable and falsifiable, whereas god is not. Now that’s not to say that makes science inherently better than god, but I personally find the scientific method more reassuring than a more blind faith like one in god. I have a large amount of respect for religion and I find stories like the divine comedy fascinating, touching, and thought-provoking, and honestly, people shouldn’t give a damn what other people believe in if they’re not hurting anyone. Let them be.

A couple of cool facts about the Divine Comedy:
- Dante wrote it in 15 years, that is why you see a style change
- The comedy is written so it rhymes in a way to recall sacred numbers multiple times, for example you have 3 sections (inferno, purgatorio and paradiso) and each of this section is described in 33 canti.
- The idea behind the shape of Hell, Purgatory and Heaven is that when Satan fell he created a "Heaven" in his image, doing that all the dirt he moved went to form the Mountain of Purgatory at the other side of the world.
- When Dante and Virgilio get from Hell to Purgatory they use a narrow passage (which is where all the dirt from Hell came to form Purgatory) and all that is meant to resemble the act of birth from the fetus perspective.

As a Christian myself, ngl, hearing this summary and seeing your reaction to reading it really got to me. While like you I don’t believe in a lot of the things that Dante presents in this story, the beauty of which he tells this story and your genuine reaction I think convicted me. If I can be candid, I haven’t been living the life I should be, to put it lightly. But honestly this has been wanting me to be more intentional in my own relationship with God. Thank you so much man. You’re one of my favorite CZcamsrs and I’m happy and thankful to be subscribed to you.
My man Vergil walked all the way through hell guiding Dante, pulling him away from the dangers, then went all the way up through the purgatory, even going full demon hunter as his bro was being tempted, and in the very end walked through cleansing flames just so Dante wouldn't be alone, letting him know that he was now a better man than Vergil himself was.

Bromance always made me sobbing like crazy! Especially when the ending was like Virgil and Dante.
That "free will/rightiousness" bit left me in shambles, but I was simply not ready for that ending with Virgil and everything after that.
It changed my whole perspective in my 20s
The thought of God just waiting, tending the garden for us if we ever want to be by his side again…😢 totally made me cry with pure emotions. I haven’t felt this warm feeling in my chest for a long time, I was starting to give up and think I’ve just gone cold. You’ve done a great thing here, and for many more than just me I’m sure ❤
This video tripped me out. Towards the end where you mention Beatrice stating in the future someone known as "515" would come to defeat the vixen and the giant. I had no knowledge whatsoever regarding this before watching this series on the divine comedy. But I had a vision in a dream involving the number 515 that sent chills down my spine back when it happened, and was instantly reminded of it as soon as you mentioned it.
In the dream I was inside the foyer of a church I went to as a child. I hadn't been inside the church for at least a decade at this point. It seemed to take place in the future as this church was somewhat outdated in terms of decor, but it was all updated and renovated. I was speaking to who I presume was the pastor in this foyer (was dressed like a pastor for sure) he wasn't someone I know or recognized. I don't recall the conversation at all but what I do remember is noticing a fancy wooden plaque over the doors that lead into the sanctuary that just had the number "515" written on it. I asked the pastor dude about it and he simply replied with "WE ARE THE 515" and I awoke immediately knowing I just experienced something important but not knowing what it meant at all. The best thing I could come up with was that he was referencing psalm 51:5. That seemed relevant at the time as I was deeply in sin at that point in my life. Hearing this symbolism from Dante just added a whole new layer of confusion to it

It's about as bittersweet as it gets. It's such an honour, but it's tragic that it has to come to an end. It's like birds and people, they've got to leave their flock someday. It's sad, but that's what the whole journey's been about up to that point.

I think that Dante's initial immaturity is thematically reflective of his journey through Hell, then realizing his sins and becoming modest and introspective in Purgatory, finally to the Purity and Selflessness of Soul in Heaven.
Symbolic, Dantes demeanour is reflective of the atmosphere of each afterlife.
Virgil guiding others to a treasure he cannot possess.

I’m not Christian and don’t really have any good memories of religion, but I do appreciate the sentiment of this story and the ending with all the symbolism. The part that really got to me was Vergil’s departure. To me, it seemed like heartfelt moment which is rare on Dante’s behalf. I also used to ship those two together a lot when I first read this story and they seemed so happy together, it just gets me teary eyed.

Huh, I think this is the first time I've ever truly understood the appeal of faith and religion. Like, obviously I've always understood, on a more abstract level, that it brings comfort and direction and a sense of purpose to many people, but seeing this guy getting emotional about the end of Purgatory finally made it really "click" for me. This was an incredibly moving and enlightening video even for somebody who's never been religious at all.
It really does give some sort of solace. It's nice to believe that maybe, just maybe, there is a force of unending mercy and love. If I'm wrong I'm wrong but with all the bad in the world, it's nice to think that there is a love greater than what I can humanly conceive when I die. I hope that everyone can find that solace.

You forgot to mention how when Beatrice first speaks to Dante, that's the first and only time in the entire book where he's called by his name, so if the name of the author would've been lost in time we would've known it thanks to that line
I took a course on Dante and the Comedy in college and wanted to clear up some confusions/mistakes that I saw in the video:
He mentions that people have to struggle in purgatory for their sins and, if they can bear it, they can go to heaven. This explanation isn't true. Unless you're like the most perfect sinless person ever and can go straight to heaven, most everyone has to go through purgatory. If you are in purgatory, you will get to heaven eventually - it's only a matter of time. Some people take longer than others and some have to wait longer in Ante-Purgatorio (pre-puragtory) before they can even start, but they will make it there. That's why everyone is in high spirits and takes their punishments stride and sing in the night. They will be reunited with God soon(ish). The reason why the souls all asked Dante to tell people on Earth pray for them is because, according to Dante, one's time in Purgatory is shortened prayer. They can sooner begin their ascent up the mountain if the living pray for them.
Cato being a sort of guard to Purgatory is a fairly significant piece of symbolism in the book that kind of got brushed over in this video. He isn't even named in the story, but being referred to by being the husband of a named woman and that he died in Utica so that we can infer that it is him. He is significant because he is a pagan and likely should have been in Hell like Virgil, yet he was given the job to guard Purgatory and make lazy souls start their ascent. By even being there, the implication is that he too is saved and will one day be in heaven, despite having never believed in God. This was seen as being kind of countercultural to the time. There's debate on the symbolism of it, but what I learned and believe stems from how Cato died, having killed himself instead of being conquered by Julius Caesar. We described this as being a sort of king of yourself, being full control of your mind, body and soul. This is what the people in Purgatory are repenting and being punished for not being able to do in their lifetimes and what they are trying to do by climbing the mountain. Virgil says this to Dante during his departure "I invest thee then With crown and mitre, sovereign o'er thyself".
I'm not sure if he covered it in the Inferno video, but Dante isn't just Dante and Virgil isn't just Virgil. Dante represents humanity and Virgil represents logic (Beatrice represents faith, but that isn't really important right now). According to Dante, God gave man logic to overcome his daily struggles and to use reason in their daily lives, but logic alone isn't enough to reach heaven (which is why Virgil symbolically can't go to heaven) and instead man needs faith. This is why Dante was given Virgil as a guide in the first place through Hell, but he becomes less and less necessary through Purgatory as logic isn't needed to guide one through the trials of one's faith. Dante leaves Virgil because man does not need logic to reach God/heaven, but must be guided by faith, which we see with Beatrice's presence in Paradiso.
The "vixen" in the procession in the Garden of Eden is supposed to represent how Dante feels about the church, that he thinks that the church is a whore because of many different reasons that are explained throughout Inferno and Purgatorio, not the least of which are Jubilee years and popes taking bribes to bless people. Dante thinks of the church as two parts, the human part and the Godly part. The Godly part is perfect but the human part has become corrupted. Some things never change.
Someone in the comments already did a pretty good explanation of the 515 potentially meaning DUX and what that means.
Dante felt heavy during the pride tier because he his guilty of pride - his intellectual pride. We see examples of him acknowledging this throughout the books, like when he calls himself a better poet than Ovid because he did a double metamorphosis when Ovid could only do a single one. Dante implies by feeling this weight that when his time comes to go through purgatory for real when he dies, he will have to spend a while there. The same goes for lust when he feels the searing pain from the fire. He feels an intellectual lust for Beatrice, as a muse and as his symbol of faith/God in the Comedy. This again implies his guilt of his sin of lust and something he expects to pay for when he dies. I guess as an aside, I should mention that Dante was not married to, nor had he ever dated, Beatrice. People seem to think that either of these were the case. Back then, marriages were arranged and love was not really in the equation, yet he and others what do some sort of flirtatious things with people they loved including looking at each other in church and looking away one the other notices, childish stuff like that. Dante talks about this in his other writings.
I'm sure there are other things I could go over, but that seems good for now.
I just thought one cool thing: Paarthurnax a dragon from Skyrim that says "What is better? To be born good or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?" is actually living through purgatory. Cool bonus point is that he resides at the top of the mountain.

You could take that a step further and say Alduin is the serpent returning to drag him down, and the Dovahkiin is the angel sent down (By Akatosh in this case) to fight him off.
The relationship between them even has the same consequences. Just as in Purgatorio, the day the "angel" can't fight anymore and the "serpent" wins, that marks the beginning of "Judgment day", or the end of the Kalpa cycle in the context of Skyrim.
I don't know if the writers intended all of that necessarily, but it's fun to think about all the parallels you can draw.

As someone who isn't superstitious, I always found death to be quite alright, having been around it a fair bit.
What seems to be problematic as I've seen it is that people left behind tend to focus on nostalgia and the potential time lost as opposed to focusing on the time that was had with whoever died.

you see, in medieval times, there used to be two versions of "italian" as we know it now, caused by the fact that not everyone was able to study-and Italy wasn't unified yet, so the languange would divide itself: they used to speak either "volgare" and latin, the first one being the "language of the poors" (for example, what a poor medieval farmer would know, so kind of the basic and more simple speech) and the second well..it's latin (if you were a priest or high up in the social ranking-or just rich enough to be able to study, you would know latin).
Dante obliviously knew latin as well and so he planned to have a writing style/write the dialogues in three different ways: inferno would have the most basic speech (with lots of swears and cursing too), meanwhile purgatorio would have had a more high up level of speech, not latin yet but sort of a midway, something that a well taught person would know but still be able to be understood even by some of the "lower socially ranked" people. then up to paradise, it gets to straight up latin and just has reeeally complicated words/expressions. ideally, the closer you get to God, the harder it gets to comprehend.

It feels as if, and this is my interpretation, Dante wrote the trilogy in memory of Beatrice. He loved her so much it was a way to relieve his grief and to overcome it. To write the stages of his loss and acceptance. He represents her as Jesus because in life she was his saviour and he felt like she saved him from a life of sin, and that he cannot live without her, at least not a good life. Without her he faltered, and is ashamed of himself for falling from grace so easily. He comes to learn in a reflection tthrough religious beliefs, she doesn't need to be there for him to love her and to do good with her. That he can do good and live right in respect of her, just as he was doing while she was alive. This is a love story, a story of a man who would walk through hell for the woman he loved. But instead of coming home with her, he learned to overcome his grief and that one day they may be together again.
My partner might die in surgery in nine days and I fear I will become Dante in my way. I already told them I would cleave them world in two for them, in their memory and in their continued existence. They were the only real light in my life and they may fade soon. I don’t know what hell I’m going to thrust myself into yet.
