How much power can turbos and intercooler gain on an Ecoboost F-150?

  • In this one, we swap out the factory turbos and intercooler on an 3.5 Ecoboost F-150 for better, more efficient ones! The new turbos are the same size as factory but they have upgraded internals. The new intercooler which is almost twice the size of factory, fits in like a glove to help those new turbos breathe! This job only requires basic work, but yields a pretty fair horsepower gain in return.

      Turbo's and supers are basically just a proper dyno away from unlimited power. So long as the forced induction components can handle the insane air throughput, it's changing the displacement without increasing the volume of the cylinder. All the while keeping the v6 gas mileage in the low demand scenarios.

    I don’t pretend to know or understand the variables involved with all the different Dyno’s but I’m with several people that have commented on here. I’ve seen several times personally between my own or several friends over the years including 2020 3.5 and have seen bone stock rear wheel numbers consistently north of 310 WHP.
    After watching this video and reading the numbers and the comments I googled and CZcamsd ‘stock 3.5 dyno test’ and the 3-4 I watched were all over 315 - 333 WHP.
    So I am also confused with what reality actually is and why these numbers vary so much.

    • @xxdemonshitxx
      @xxdemonshitxx Před 2 lety +1

      A little late here but I'll try to answer these questions. If the newer F150's were MAF-based, then you'd want to stick with the recirculating system that comes stock. But since it's a MAP-only truck, you can go with either recirc or VTA and you won't lose power or air efficiency. The only way to blow out the turbos is by not having either system in place causing the built up air pressure to flow back to the turbo inlets which it then would make a noticeable fluttering noise. Some people do this on purpose "because it sounds cool", but once you understand the damage it causes to the blades it'll just make you cringe. As far as the aftermarket turbos go, I believe it mostly has to do with the electronic wastegates on the Gen2 3.5 turbos. CRPerformance was the first to come up with a solution, as you may know, which involved machining stock turbos so they could add bigger compressor wheels...otherwise the turbos would have to be redesigned from the ground up and last I checked 6 months ago, only one company (Garrett) took the risk and did just that.

    I don't have the three five EcoBoost so I don't know but those power numbers before and after seem really low because I thought from the factory the crank rating was 365 horsepower 400 torque and so that's a really low or I guess high percentage drop of power through the drivetrain I saw vids of stock 3.5 ecobooats making over 300 to the wheels and I know that altitude temperature and things can end the dyno can affect how much it reads but that still seems really low I had a 2011 mustang v6 3.7 l naturally aspirated stock and it made 260 horsepower and 240 foot pounds of torque and it was rated 305 horsepower and 280 torque from the factory and after I made my own vortex supercharger kit I was pushing over 400 horsepower the rear wheels off I think 10 PSI if I remember right so those numbers just seem crazy low

      They are the same size as the factory turbos, but with different internals. Usually when you do this internal upgrade on the CHRA you are just changing the style of the wheels, not the size. Even on the best of turbos that is only good for about a 10% improvement over the stock turbo design. So this actually isnt bad for just that swap and an intercooler upgrade, but its ALOT of work for such a small gain. This IMO would be only something you do after youve blown the factory turbos and exhausted all your other mods.
