  • In this video Peter is again invited to fish the Hungerford Town & Manor beats on the River Kennet in Berkshire. The Kennet is one of the south's most treasured chalkstreams, and although does not perhaps receive the same attention as the Test the river system offers massive hatches and miles of fishable water. Fishing in mid July on a scorthing hot day, Peter fishes a combination of dry fly and nymph to some stunning Kennet trout culminating in a wonderful evening rise.

    Love the England chalk streams. I’m from the states but have fished three different times on the Test and Bourne (read Where the Bright Eaters Meet). Some of the most challenging fishing I have done. Love the Mayflies and the wild browns and grayling. Wonderful memories for sure. Thank you for the video.

    Despite the dryness all over Europe, there is a lot of water down there, because of the nature of the river, I suppose; Could you tell me if am I right or wrong? Thanks 👋

    • @AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishing
      @AardvarkMcLeodFlyFishing  Před rokem +2

      Yes, you are absolutely right. The Chalkstreams are a rare phenomenon. The water you see fell as rain some three to four months ago, percolates through the chalk structure and the collects in aquifers underground. It then bubbles up as springs which give these rivers a constant flow and temperature making them an extraordinary habitat for aquatic life and fish. Then there is the scientific approach to weed cutting. For the last 150 years the river keepers have tended to their beats and get in the river once a month and cut the weed by hand. Where, how and how much they cut determines the course of the river along with how much water can be held back. In a low water year like this they do not cut as much which holds the levels. For them it’s about maintaining the quality of habitat for the fish.

    Great video Peter... a lovely location...thanks for sharing...may I ask if were you using a double taper or weight forward 3 or 4wt floating line please? thank you..your 9'9" 3wt Hardy LL rod / it's action seemed to work well with light tippets for both dry flies and nymphs to land some very nice fish
