- Fishing this year has revolved mainly around my obsession for Saltwater Fly Fishing. It's on my doorstep, it's challenging and it's great fun. The fishing in this video really demonstrates that, I don't catch anything huge, but bass have a habit of taking you by surprise and nothing gets the adrenaline going more than a topwater smash! I get caught off guard in perfectly still conditions at dawn as well as in the midst of a hive of fish activity in heavy flow.
The two sessions in this video are nearly a month apart, in that time I have been trying to catch my second mullet on the fly which is proving to be a tough one! I also had a trip to Dartmoor for 2 days with my dad for my birthday and we caught a few nice wild brown trout from Fernworthy Reservoir and the Upper Teign.

So I am really trying to get a mullet video out, I started making it in March and hopefully my spots from last year where they were in numbers will start to produce again. But I also have a goal for this year of a fly caught 50CM+ bass, my first fish of the season was really close and set my new PB so I'm hoping it's just a matter of time.

@@thereel7071 nice, I thought I recognised a few areas. I've always wanted to try fly fishing for bass but just don't know where to start. I'm only 5 minutes from Hayling.
@@dwardz1 Hayling is definitely a good place to start, have you got any gear/ fly fished before?
@@thereel7071 oh yeah, I'm a keen fly fisherman but still waters typically.
@@dwardz1 I’d say fishing for bass definitely has some similarities. The majority of the time you are stripping in flies in a similar way to fishing lures for trout. The tide introduces flow which you have to contend with but it’s all part of the learning curve.
If you have a 7 or 8wt rod then you could use that to give it a try. I keep leaders super simple, 6ft butt section of 35lb fluoro and 2ft of 10 or 15lb tippet, I scale down to 10 if it’s really calm.
I’ve done a video on bass flies that covers everything you’ll need to catch fish, which isn’t much, I’ve caught all my fish this year on 2 flies 😄
The thing that’s going to make the biggest difference is finding a good mark and fishing it at the right state of tide which has taken me nearly 3 years to get the hang of consistently. A general rule of thumb is to fish 2 hours either side of high or low tide as the fish should be moving in or out as it floods/ ebbs. Then as I say in the video, keep moving and look for bait fish on the surface, birds diving, structure and flow, these are all clues that bass will be nearby 👍 sometimes you find one of these things, sometimes a combination.
Most important thing is to stay safe, you’ll need some wading gear and an awareness of the tide as there are places where you can get cut off if you’re not careful. And a line tray is a must as the tide, rocks and loose fly line don’t mix well 😄
