  • The bass season has been a great one so far, thinking back to this time just last year I hadn't caught a single fish but this year has been very different. A lot of that is down to me having more knowledge of my marks and experience than I did this time last year and I'm feeling like the hard work and blank sessions are paying off.
    In this video I continue my search for bass on the fly on the UK South Coast. Having caught a couple of nice fish on Clouser Minnow flies I decide that now things are warming up a bit, it's time to try and get one on a topwater.
    I've caught a couple of bass before on a topwater fly called a Gurgler. I recently tied up a couple of my own and have been keen to get that bass smash! I explore some new marks and some more familiar in the hunt for the surface bite and it all comes good in the end with some exciting bass action, stalking a fish that gives away it's presence smashing bait fish on the surface.
    My bass fishing has been all the more enjoyable this season as I have opted to use my Fortitude Rod Co Ogawa S-Glass rod that I build last Autumn for pike. It makes a great bass rod, fitted out with saltwater resisitant hardware, it's great fun for close quarters bass fly fishing.
    It may be a couple of weeks before I get fishing again but I am absolutely buzzing for more bass surface bites, but I do also want to get into some mullet soon, it's going to be hard to give the bass a break!
    Tight lines and I'll see you in the next one.

    Really interesting way to catch Bass. Spectacular scrapping, especially the first fish.

    The fins get messed up by landing nets. The spines catch in them and the soft part of the fin gets pushed down and damaged. Watch the fin next time you land one and you’ll see what I mean.

    Have you tried Lock Lake at the top of the harbour, I've had plenty of bass and mackerel out of there. all on the fly great video.

      Not yet, still got lots of areas to explore. Sounds good, would love to get in to some mackerel. Cheers 😄

    Looks very similar to the sea trout fishing in Denmark. Do you ever get sea trout there? We do get Bass in the western part of Denmark, but the fishing is a lot different.

    • @thereel7071
      @thereel7071  Před měsícem

      We do get sea trout, but they tend to run up the rivers fairly quickly as far as I know and don’t hunt on the coast. There are places where catching one would be possible but very unlikely.
      I must admit, watching coastal fishing for sea trout was part of what inspired me to try the coast here, albeit for different species.

      @@thereel7071 Interesting. Here in Denmark we catch a lot of them. I have a bunch of videos showing what the fishing is like. The Bass on the other hand is on open north sea coast only.

      @@maaj58 I know of coastal sea trout fishing in Scotland which is similar, it’s interesting as we have plenty of rivers on the UK south coast that the sea trout run up but you don’t hear of them being caught in the sea unfortunately.

      @@thereel7071 Yeah. It's strange they have so different behaviours. Some of the areas you fish looks very muddy. Places like that we usually with very brackish water we catch them in winter/early spring usually from January to midt March. Around the first full moon in March we have ragworms spawning and it's like the mayfly hatch for sea trout.

      @@thereel7071 I have fished with DM in the past, but not for a very long time. Flyfishing for bass puts most other types of fishing in the shade.
