Still Water Fly Fishing for Trout-Getting Started-Kick Start this Spring on a Winner.

  • I have decided to go through methods and Patterns we will use during Spring. This will hopefully give us a head start for which we hope will be one of the best times to be on the water. The biggest challenge in Fly Fishing is the cast. But the good thing is that you don't have to be a pro to enjoy a good days fishing. There is so much information out there which is making fly fishing appear complicated. So many people wanting to create there way on how to. Trust me. A good days fishing on a still water with an understanding about fish, can be so simple and very rewarding. For most of this footage in this video is from last year. Hope you enjoy the video. Please consider to help the channel grow. And subscribe. Many thanks. Shaun.

    Hi Shaun, good video. I like yuor trick of ginking the nymph to make it sink slowly. When the wind gets a bit strong and forces the fly to move a bit too quick I either use a sink tip, maybe with a heavier wire buzzer on the point, or, if the bank is clear, walk along keeping the line pretty straight so the nymph is essentially static.

    • @shaunfishes101
      @shaunfishes101  Před 2 měsíci

      Hi David, the gink as it should holds it more on the top. Which I want it to do, but only for a short time. Once it drops through the water, its decent is only slightly slower. I often walk the bank. but that is as soon as I make the cast. But in a stronger wind it wont be long before you will have to make a few mends. Or change the angle of cast. Thanks for the comment David. Shaun.

First and last hours was most definitely the best. Fishing near the top with smaller patterns, and some times with a bit of pace. Lures took a few but not as many. From what I remember it was, as most are as you know. This was last Spring. I wanted to do some Spring videos ahead of time, and working on my predictions. The thing with these videos is that when we are fishing in real time. Time to edit. The video goes out and the moment has passed. The Squirrel is a great pattern, more so due to its versatility. Very much like a ptn. However the ptn cant sit on top quite as good as the squirrel. Fished with a size 10 ptn a week or so ago. OK it had pearl in the thorax area. Fished really fast near top. Shit it was good. Four days later 1 fish and a few follows. What a difference. I am sure you will enjoy the day what ever. I have not done as much fishing at the moment. • @shaunfishes101
      @shaunfishes101  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I would agree with you Martin. The bigger the water the harder to locate the fish. But this is when local knowledge comes in. Once we find the fish, its much the same. However we may require faster sink lines if the fish are deep. We do cover big waters. But these are mainly the wild lakes of Wales. And we may see more of the boats on the big waters soon. You will see more of our local water Hayscastle, as this is a great water for trying methods and patterns. The reason for this is that it is a very small catchment. There for it does not get stocked as often as a lot of waters. So we fish mainly for resident fish. Thanks for the comment Martin, Great hearing from you. Good luck with the Squirrel Fly. Its simple and consistent, so I hope you have a few ready for when the fish start to move a bit higher in the water. Take care mate. Shaun.

Mind saying that we have started fishing them, and have had a good few fish already. But for us they will come into there own over the next few months as the fish move towards the surface. Oh the straw is actually barley. The barley rots slowly but releases compounds which helps against algae and blanket weed growth and nutrients. It is also bought in small bails or bundles for small garden ponds. It is best placed near incoming water. Not all of ours are. Keep in touch James and watch out for the Cling Film on the water. Second season starts for me I two weeks, every time I watch a video about buzzers I get more confused, no retrieving, let the wind drag them, slow retrieval, you’re still to fast, quick sharp pulls, strip it in, long 3 foot pulls and wait, dunno what’s best at all tbh 😂. Nice fishing though 👍

    • @shaunfishes101
      @shaunfishes101  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Hi John this is simple. There are a lot of people that believe you have to stick to a method or retrieve, which may well be tradition. I will tell anybody never give up on a pattern until you have tried every retrieve. I have a few buzzer videos on the channel you should watch. The first is over two years ago. Buzzer fishing direct contact. Thumbs says, the most devastating way to fish the buzzer. Feel free to watch all of it. But be warned this was my early days, and I was learning how to do videos. But the end part is what is most interesting and controversial. Very rare back then that for most would not pull a buzzer. I have had criticism for doing so. But have managed to convince quite a few people. Now it is more common to do so. And patterns being tied for the purpose. The second video you must watch to understand about buzzers. Is the Truth about Buzzers. went out about 9/10 months ago. The information in there totally turn the whole idea as to how the buzzer moves in the water. This time I received no criticism at all. But instead more people accepting what I have said. Honestly John you need not worry what buzzer or how. When and if there is a big hatch, all you need is a buzzer at about 3'/4' and you will be smashed. Thing is the buzzer fishing is not what it used to be. We used to see millions on a hatch at the same time and the fish went frantic and smashed most anything in the path. Now we are seeing reduced numbers for a big part of the country. A hatch now could be one short lived and in there thousands. This is a massive difference as how the fish behave. If you like watch the videos as I believe they are true. Then get back to me with any questions. Look forward to hearing from you John. Shaun.

    • @shaunfishes101
      @shaunfishes101  Před 3 měsíci +2

      Hi Christopher thanks for that. Hayscastle does get a bit breeze at times, but the fish love it. The casting is effortless when when rod line and timing are all put together. Confidence in shooting the line at the correct time. Far to many people have too much line out side the rod tip. Slow it up and relax. Feel the line. Have told loads of people do it blind folded. You will soon pick up on the feel of whats going on. You will soon realise that a double haul is not essential to get 80' plus. If you have watched the casting video you will know how important the line is and understanding the line. Every line will cast differently. I will try and cover the cast at some point. But there is a lot more going on than what you see. For every one that visits our water and wanting help with casting. First thing I have to do is cast there rods. As every set up is completely different. I will then know what is required to get the best of this rod and line. Keep at it. But try slowing up a bit. Try a few different things. Spend a bit of time just casting, not fishing. Each tweak is microscopic. I put a lot of time in to all my casting and really enjoy it. That is every thing apart from spey cast, as we don't require this much on the still waters. Thanks for the comment mate. Shaun.

The belly is quite long mind, which means a bit more line out side the rod for bigger casts. But the main thing we look for is a line with good memory. Which this has. Now I have been using this line for about two months plus. I can certainly say I would purchase another one. But this line is for the smaller stuff. Lures on this line is very hard work. Limited in stronger wind. Great line for £15 or so. Now its the price that makes this such a great line. How long it lasts we will find out.

What seems to have happened is that the outer core has worn. Not much. But it certainly interferes with the cast. What I will do is give it another clean. Which I did do only last week. Hi Mark, not to keen on recommending a rod. As an idea, Justin has so many rods that we have lost count. 90% of these are top range. We cast with them but often have different opinions. We have done the fast action rods but are moving more towards mid action or mid/fast. Not fast/mid. This is more down to what we want to fish, like smaller patterns. Fast action is fine for really windy conditions. Another important point is casting ability. One rod worth a look is the Sage LL. But you must try before bye if you can. Pity you were not closer to us. Between us boys we have most rods, you could have tried as many as you like. For myself each rod has a purpose. I have no all round rod. And what suites me may not suit you. As I say there is so many things to consider. Your casting ability, what you will fish most, what lines, as in sink or float and the conditions your more likely to fish. If you fancy a holiday in Pembrokeshire, then I am sure we could help. Sorry Mark there are a lot of good rods out there, but what suits you best I have no idea. Catch up soon mate. Shaun.

      @@markhalpin995Well that is what I was fishing with in the second half. I personally like this rod. Ok a bit heavier than a few rods we use and a little stiffer in the tip. A good caster will have no problem with this rod and achieving better distance. And as you know this rod will present nymphs and lures very well. But if you want to present the small stuff on lighter tippet you will have to look at something in the mid range action. Think I have mentioned the Sage LL. This is the direction we are heading, as for most of the year now we are finding fish feeding more on the small stuff. I am referring to the resident fish. And this has a lot to do with climate. The Sage LL is a lovely rod to cast and fish with, and surprisingly does not take much longer to over come the fish. I my self still looking for the same but a bit cheaper. You are so kind John. Thank you so much. I do have quite a few of them myself. Intermediate is all I use mainly now. Roman Mosser are the ones I have from new. Which I purchased a few years back. The one I still use has to be around 30 years old. OK its a bit shorter. I am glad you have found them. Justin who told me some time ago he would never bother with one. Only today was showing me his new intermediate tapered braid. He has finally seen the light. The squirrel which has been fished for about three years now, and does make a good few appearances on the channel. This pattern has caught a lot of fish year round. As I said in the video we fish it at all levels. And we love it because it is so simple and simple at the vice. Thanks for the comment John. Take care mate and thanks again. I will never forget your generosity. Shaun.

    • @shaunfishes101
      @shaunfishes101  Před 3 měsíci

      Hi Mark, I do and surprised you have not seen that one. Check out the Cling Film Fly. I do the Squirrel first. Now the Cling Film Fly is worth a go. We do this on a small size 16 and very small wings. This pattern is a treat, and certainly as the weather warms. Steve and I was catching on this only last week. And the fishing at the time was very difficult. Fished the same as the Squirrel. Either put a small bit of gink on, or leave as is. Both patterns are simple at the vice. If you have stock fish in the water, go with the normal stock bashing flies.Once they have been in for around two weeks for winter and about one week for summer. Switch to these flies. I am sure they may pick up stock fish. But being more natural do better on resident fish, when the stock flies start to fail. Good luck with it Mark. Let me know how you get on. Shaun.

      How many times do I hear this and even witness this. We have two of the young boys on our water. Tom and Milo. Tom introduced Milo to fly fishing last summer. Milo is now a very competent fly fisher. When ever he has the opportunity he's on the water. When ever he and Tom fish. Its Milo with the biggest bag. Your set up sounds great. Washing line isn't it. Are you fishing this method at the moment. Or is this more for Spring and Summer. Great to hear your story. Especially from some one who is not so much into the sport. Take care mate. Shaun.

Due to all the problems with rivers and reduced stock I felt they were best left alone to hopefully recover. So now its mainly Still Waters. Fishing the Sedge is my sort of fishing. Fast and great fun. Nice one mate. Take care. Shaun.

    • @shaunfishes101
      @shaunfishes101  Před 2 měsíci

      To be honest I am still messing about with the hooks. But they are all Fulling Mill. Either Grab Gape Black Nickel 10 and 8. Heavy Weight Champ 10 or 8. A lot will depend on what size the pattern is going to be. I am tending to go more with the size 8. This is only that the hook does sit a bit further back. Make sure you get the lead wire in place and you will have no problems in getting those fish. This pattern has been used on a lot of waters around the world. And has been very successful. For me its catch rate is around 85%. And is best on an intermediate. So you will experience times when fish will not respond. But these are going to be few and far between. Tight lines. Shaun.

      @@jpdorsethq1280You are absolutely correct. It is known as line strike. Which I have covered in other videos and use a lot. But mainly on sink lines. This is due to the weight of water. However even at distance with a good floater this is not always the case. But it could have helped. This is more out of habit and instinct. Thanks for getting back. Shaun.
