Fly Fishing for Wild Brown Trout in Northumberland Using Nymphs and Dry Flies

  • The weather hasd been really poor in Northumberland with big swells and heavy wind making lure and kayak fishing impossible, so and headed off to do a bit of wild brown trout fishing with my fly rod. Dry fly fishing was the aim but the cold temperatures meant a lack of insects around so nymphs ended up catching all the fish.
I do love a bit of fly fishing with thrill of hunting down fish and seeing the takes, it's almost as good as topwater fishing for bass.

Unbelievable. I was sat on the river bank, at 8:30 this morning, the 1st, at the mouth of the River Coquet, on a course, wish I had brought my fly rod ho ho. Did not know St Abbs had band shore fishing. Love all the videos, no matter what location, stay safe. Tight lines

Yeah I was surprised to read it, it was a post on the Scottish Sea Fishing FB page and it's stated on the nature reserve page too. Not sure if it's new or old advice but I don't want to risk pissinging them off, incase they keep the ban in place longer. Tight lines👍🎣

Excellent! Showing some impressive versatility, I think there's a few of us envious watching you hammer the bass and pollock on the northumbrian coast, so we can take a bit of pleasure when a tricky, wild river gives you a hard time!🤣
The 1st fish was a minnow, a huge one! And the last one I think a salmon smolt, a salmon parr turning silver and dropping down to the sea. April and May often see these bright little fish.
I'm OK with river trouting, but bloody hopeless with lures etc in the sea, although I've enjoyed my blanking at Eyemouth and Dunbar 🤣

@@SlippyLimpets yes, unfortunately the Lancashire coast (50 min from where I live) is long sand/mud beaches or shallow muddy estuaries, so the sea is very coloured 99% of the time, and flounder fishing tends to be the order of the day! There are bass around but few seem to be caught from the shore. I once discoved a low tide mark that gave me a few bass up to 5lb on fly, but the last few visits have been unproductive, there's a certain tide phase you have to get right. I've had coalfish on fly and lure from the Scottish coast, but not quite managed a pollock yet on either lure or fly, will try again next summer in either dunbar or Eyemouth. Need more time on these clearwater coasts! Your channel is doing well, I've got a utube channel but not in the same league! (soul trader 57) cheers dp

Eyup fella. Stone me, I recommend wildlife porn for subs and within days you're posting pheasants on the job. You're a card you are. Back in the clean world - I wonder what you think about the lack of consultation with anglers before decisions have been made about activities in marine conservation areas? Own goal? I used to sneak about in a river below a trout lake near here when I was a kid to snaffle 'escapees' so this one was nostalgic for me.
Cheers bud and good luck finding your new ground. Dave

      Haha, it's just a coincidence 😉
It's private land so they can do what they like but you're right about the lack of consultation, would have been nice to have a conversation about it. I can see their logic, some anglers are dirty and leave line and cans all over the popular marks, and on others you Do come pretty close to nesting puffins and razor bills, but the iritating thing is that recreational boat fishing is still allowed on the same ground.

They're too small to eat from this river, I think the minimum size is 12 inches
