    I'm going to switch to Sony's A7 iii very soon and I love how you're being practical about your lens selection. I've always been the same way when I'm shooting with a canon.

    apart from the fact that you incidentally said all that i wanted to hear (haha!) you did reinforce a lot of things that i too had in mind all along - like the fuss with all the f stops between two lenses with the similar focal lengths...i could relate to it a 100%

    Hey Chris! Thank you so much for making videos on a7iii. You made my choice of buying an a7iii super easy.
    Now that I have my a7iii with the 28-70 mm kit lens. I also purchased the 24mm GM because it was such a popular lens on the market and on social media.
    I’m looking for another zoom
    lens. Could you please recommend one?
    Mainly looking to shoot day time photography and events.
    Confused between the 70-200 and 24-105. Please help!

    Awesome review! You really helped a couple lens decisions. I have the 50mm 1.8 Sony and it was $300 cad, is the 55mm really that much better? Also, if you have the money for the 70-200 at 2.8 I would strongly recommend just getting the 100-400 G master for a similar price, especially if you're planning to buy the 55mm and 85mm.

I am wondering if i would be smart to buy the first one you mentioned in this video, the 16-35mm f4. im looking for a wide angle lens but also a zoom lens also. is there one that may have come out more recently that can do both or do you think the first on you mentioned in this video is the most cost effective bang for your buck? Chris, just checked out your channel. Lots of great content! When shooting events I rent the 16-35mm and the 70-200mm both at f2.8. but interesting that you use the f4 versions instead. I might have to try them out on the next shoot as they're so much lighter and easier on the back.......especially on a full day of shooting!
    Keep up the great work dude! 👍

    • @chrisbrockhurst
      @chrisbrockhurst  Před 5 lety

      Good to see you here Mike! Yeh alot lighter, cheaper and not a huge amount of difference that the A7iii can't handle, I put across a different point compared to what other people sometimes say.. the 2.8 versions are also crazy expensive and not everybody always needs em!

  • @XennialTraveller

    Great video with clear, sensible recommendations - thank you! After many years photographing with Nikon, I'm more into a mixture of travel vlogging and photos so looking to buy into the A7III and this video was perfect. 16-35mm was my always-on lens anyway, so that's a no brainer. I also used to mainly carry a 50mm f1.8 on travels (great for street photos), but I'm tempted to go 85mm first for the extra reach and telephoto hack (great idea!), and force me to look at scenes differently. Reckon the 16-35mm and 85mm are a good starter/barebones combo for travel photos/videos?

    Thanks Chris. I’m about to move to a sony A7iii from a Fuji XT3 system and this video was really useful in getting me to think about what I really need and what I don’t need to duplicate . I never considered the 16-35 and was looking at the 24-70 but the 16 could really be useful and can fill in the gap with the 55. I am considering the 70-200 F2.8 as I shoot low light sports and the f2.8 will really help at fast speeds and keep the iso down. Thanks again and just subscribed !

    Excellent break-down and review of some of the Sony full frame lenses and their applications related to how you shoot. I’d like to add about the f/4 zoom lenses, that they are smaller and lighter than the f/2.8 zooms, plus at least most of the f/4 zooms have OIS, which for non-action shots is a great thing to have. Granted the newer Sony bodies have IBIS, but I’m pretty sure the OIS in the lenses is more effective.

I was wondering if you could provide some guidance on a lens for the A7III that one could use primarily for documentary style street photography as well as portraits? Would it be the the 16-35mm or is there another lens you would recommend (since this video was posted)? In my case, my budget would dictate only one lens purchase at this time. As always, thank you for your time!

      16-35mm wont be bad for street. Id opt for a prime though, a solid 35mm would have great character. The Sigma 35mm F1.2/F1.4. Even a cheap option like the Tamron 35mm.

    Really pleased to see the first lens you recommend is the one I have just bought! The second one you mentioned, the 55mm f1.8 is on my wish list. I would like to ask why you prefer the Sony 70-200mm f4.0 to the Sony 70-300mm f.4.5 though. Is it the extra half stop? I bought the 70-300 for wildlife and although I'm still new to it I'm pleased with the results so far. That extra reach is really useful and it's great for telephoto macro.

  • @stevelink21

    Excellent comparisons, Chris! I have a question...As a landscape and product STILLS X-T3 shooter (no video), I have been debating on selling my Fuji kit (reluctantly), and moving into FF, specifically the Sony a7Rlll and lenses like the Sony 16-35 f/2.8 GM, and the 90mm f/2.8 G Macro . Since I shoot 99% tripod-mounted, neither IBIS nor video interests me. So, my question is, for large print output (around 24"x 36" prints), how much of an improvement in terms of image sharpness, detail rendition, dynamic range, base ISO performance, etc., would I see over the already excellent X-T3 (combined with the ultra-sharp Fujinon XF80mm f/2.8 Macro lens), when using the a7Rlll and the Sony 90mm f/2.8 G Macro or Sony 16-35 f/4 tripod-mounted? Thanks!

      not a huge difference but its personal preference :) some things look alot better at 55mm as its more natural looking (closer to what the eye see's)

    I have to agree with everything you said! I only own the Zeiss 55 and the Sony 85 but those are both amazing lenses and if you're shooting with the A7iii they are "must-have" lenses. The 85mm is quickly becoming my favorite lens for most of the scenarios I shoot.

      @AidenScottCreative Před 5 lety

      Chris Brockhurst yeah I really have been keeping the 85 on more than the 55. Especially when I'm shooting concerts. With the 85 I don't need to be as much in the preformers business to capture the emotion I'm aiming for. Plus with the Super 35 mode that 85 gives me even more reach.

    Great info and helpful when deciding between f4 and 2.8.. your right with the sony a7iii and its crazy high iso settings, I think you would have to be shooting with little to no light to need those lenses. When you switch from the 55 1.8 back to the 16-35 it sounded like the sound changed a bit (like tinny to more crisp and full). is this true or just a figment of my imagination? I just got the A7iii for it's low light capabilities and need to file some neon stuff with no other light around. My first attempt and I got alot of noise with the 28-70 at 3.5. I did just order the 85mm after watching this video as my first actual lense purchase for this camera and plan on getting the other ones you mentioned here in the next few months as I progress. Any advice on low light settings when shooting at 3.5 and up???

    • @chrisbrockhurst
      @chrisbrockhurst  Před 5 lety

      Good catch on the sound! I was further away from the camera with the 55mm so the audio would definitely not be as crisp! Way closer when I’m with the 16-35, impresses you picked up on that 👍🏻 in super dark situations the 3.5 aperture might not be enough, shouldn’t have a lot of noise st 10k iso unless it’s near pitch black

    A few thoughts:
    1) Amount of background blur and quality of background blur are not the same thing. You talk about one, but not the other. "Bokeh" traditionally refers to quality of out of focus highlights, popularly it is used to refer to anything regarding blur.
    2) The Batis 85 has OIS and the FE 85 does not, might be worth mentioning. Certainly the FE 85 is a standout for value.
    3) The extra stops of the more expensive zooms can really help the AF system in low light, worth mentioning. Certainly a factor for those that need it.
    4) Overall great lens selection, and definitely a lot of value and quality in your selections.

    Nice recommendations! I love my 16-35mm f4 its also worth mentioning this is one of the only lenses with stabilization! Paired with the sony a7iii ibis and on a gimbal you can create some buttery smooth footy. Also, the zeiss baits 85mm 1.8 has in lens stabilization as well!

    Which one would you rather choose as your first lens between Sony 16-35 mm f/4 and Sony 24-105 mm f/4 for a documentary/run-and-gun type videography, also using the gimbal. I'm leaning towards 24-105 mm as a more versatile of the two.

    Thanks for your review, I know it’s from few years back, but I wonder what you think of the Sony FE 24-240mm F3.5-6.3. I know it’s a slow lens but the versatility of having just one lens with all that range, especially for going on long hikes. Do you think it’s good or would you rather go with something with less range but faster?

    What are your thoughts on the 24-105mm f4 as a daily driver over the 16-35mm f4? Priced fairly similarly (although not Zeiss glass) but phillipreeve.net (who I'm guessing you came across in your research) were fairly positive about it?
