  • In Monster Lab 23, Ed Edmunds gives his opinion on the BEST CLAY for making monsters in the world! At Distortions Unlimited we love WED clay sculpting. This video includes a WED sculpting demo of a monster mask and tips on how to use water based clay and why we prefer to work with it. Ed also mentions some situations and reasons why a sculpture might chose oil based clay instead, such as SFX appliances, or mini figurines. We would love to hear your experiences and opinions working with WED clay below. We have included an amazon affiliate link for WED clay below. Also, if you love Monster Labs consider becoming a Monster Lab insider and supporting us on Patreon.
    WED clay was originally made for use in the sculpting Disney's animatronics models, WED (Walter E. Disney) clay is an amazing water-based, air dry clay with properties similar to many of today's most popular oil based clays. It's smooth, slow drying, extremely pliable, and works great for sculptors seeking a "fast sculpt" medium. We love to use it at Distortions for sculpting our masks, props, and large animatronic Halloween props.
    Monster Lab is a tutorial series produced by Distortions Unlimited that teaches you how to make your own diy Halloween props, masks, and monsters. We cover skills like sculpting, molding, painting, design, and more. This is a perfect video for latex mask makers, SFX artists, makers, Diy builders, fans of makerspace, mask makers, or those just interested. Make sure you check out all of our Monster Labs and subscribe.

      more of an illustrator/cartoonist than a sculptor. usually cheap air dry clay is bad. home made paper clay has to be done in a certain way and already bought air clay is expensive. and very difficult to do with paper mache. what is actually somewhat ok, if you call it a clay is what i call cotton clay. pretty much the ingredients of home made paper clay except you use cotton. but is no where near as good as WED,Monster clay,epoxy,etc. it can only give very rough texture for very primitive pieces. would be good for making trees and i think that is about it.

    I was amazed when I first touched WED. It is amazingly intuitive to form, but I have stopped using it because of dry hands and silica dust everywhere. I guess that's fine in a shop with air filters but not great in my house. Some day I hope to work with it again, using hand moisturizer and maybe a downdraft table. Plasticine is a PITA.

      DistortionsUnlimited Ed, honestly, I don’t even use WED clay for my products these days. I just buy whatever water based clay I can get from hobby lobby down the street. Shipping prices are killer. The last time I used monster clay was when I made my Frank Frazetta inspired Frankenstein: “Man-Made” for my mask company: Creature Crypt. All the other products you see on my site or my Instagram are done in store bought water based clay. I forgot in my storage I had a brand new box of Wed. Now 4 yrs later, I'm shocked it still moist however; the clasp area of the bag is slimy. Does the slime part indicate mold? How long should WED clay set or dry before applying white clay wall for casting?

    • @DistortionsUnlimited
      @DistortionsUnlimited  Před 3 lety

      Good question. Well the clay should be firm to the touch but not so dry it changes color significantly before you spray paint it. The spray paint is the mold release. Obviously you won't be able to change the sculpt once you spray paint it. Then when it is sprayed you can let it sit a few hours more before putting the clay dam on it before molding. We will have to touch on that a bit more in a future video.

    I'm just starting sculpting. The first clay I ordered was WED 217, Gray, 25 pounds. The question I have is simple - once I finish the sculpture, is there a way to make it last without casting it in a mold? I don't have tons of money to build a SPFX workshop and silicone rubbers and all that isn't cheap.

    • @DistortionsUnlimited
      @DistortionsUnlimited  Před rokem +1

      Hi Arts Model Station. No WED clay is probably not the best choice for sculpting minatures and small figures. But it depends what the figure is and what details are included. We have a Monster Lab video where we sculpt a small Gremlin prop using WED Clay and of course have a number of videos where we sculpt masks with it.

    Do you have ant tips for over night storage after you started the sculpt besides cover with plastic and air is the enemy?

    • @DistortionsUnlimited
      @DistortionsUnlimited  Před 3 lety +1

      If you cover you sculpture well with a plastic bag and make sure it is really tucked in so not much air can get in the sculpt will be fine and will not dry out over night. If it is well covered you can leave the sculpt for some time. Also, if you need to get it a bit softer again you can spray it with water and bag it, just take care you don't spray away all your details.

    • @DistortionsUnlimited
      @DistortionsUnlimited  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Monster Clay does not dry out like the clay we use. We use a water based clay that will dry out over time if not covered. But there are many advantages of WED as well. This actually would be a great question for some of our sculptors like Jordu or Tom. We will see if we can get another video out on the topic. Take care!

      @@DistortionsUnlimited thanks! BTW, love your show on travel channel. I mostly use monster clay as I usually don't have a lot of time to work on stuff so it can sit forever and knock out bits at a time. I also like that I don't need as much of an armature inside as I do WED. I don't have a WED supplier nearby so it usually costs an arm and a leg on shipping, I only live 4 hours from Monstermakers in Cleveland lol
