I was just thinking that this morning with my coffee in my hands and blanket on my lap
i save up my reddit podcasts throughout the week (mainly two hot takes and smosh now) so i can have something to listen to when im rolling silverware at my job!

For the proposal one, I can only imagine John went to grab the ring box, noticed the ring wasn't there and had a freaking panic attack before coming into the room where his confidante is fake proposing with the missing ring to his gf. Like I'd NEVER speak to that confidante again. What the F is wrong with them?'
What’s funny is that a similar situation happened to this with my brother in law but nobody stole the ring.
So basically his side of the family has a like good luck ritual where they shake the box holding the ring before the proposal. And had one those boxes where it’s just sheer fabric folded under the ring. So before he proposes he shakes the box and we guess that’s when the ring got wedged into the fabric and the side or the box in a way that was viewable obviously on the outside. So he does the generic thing of having her look at something while he kneels silently until she notices. Only for my sister to notice the ring not in the box. Cue the sudden panic as he was sure he put it in and second guessing if he even placed it in the box at all. Eventually my sister had the idea of checking the box more closely and found it. It makes a fun story though. They even called back to it by pretending the rings were lost before wearing them actually at the wedding.
Seriously this one really made me go WTF! I mean I have intrusive thoughts too but I stop myself like at least once a day from doing dumb shit. I would NEVER

All they had to do was NOT take the ring, kneel down and say "Name, will you turn around for me?" So she would turn and see the guy and he'd propose. They had the seed of a great goofy idea and absolutely made it inSANE

I think this rule extends to hair dye enthusiasts too. Someone can walk into a Sally’s with a shopping bag on their head and there’s absolutely no judgement, usually at least one person offering help. It’s one of those “girl code” things for sure.

Just throwing out that baking a cake and making a birthday meal is NOT cheap or easy. Im literally doing this right now and it wouldve been cheaper and less effort to just buy something, but WAY less special. Having a hand tailored meal is a really special gift. She totally wants David 🤣
NO FOR REAL!!! It's kind of my love language to cook for my friends and family and let me TELL YOU by the time you buy all the ingredients and spend the time to make the food, it is so much easier and cheaper to just buy it. Especially with cake, that shit takes forever especially if you want to decorate it nicely. But if you want to show you care and you enjoy cooking, it's a great way to demonstrate your affection! Not cheap or thoughtless at all

That last story about the fire and the wife getting yelled at for calling to see if he was okay is wild to me. When 9/11 happened, one of our family friends was on a plane to go somewhere for work and his wife was freaking out, trying to get a hold of him the whole time he was on his flight. Once he touched down and saw she was trying to get a hold of him, he called back to see if she and their kids were alright. In the middle of him asking, "honey, what's wrong?" he looked up in time to see the news flash on the airport TV screen and he just went silent out of shock. Like thankfully he wasn't on one of those planes but at the time, we didn't know it was JUST those four planes. This guy had a CHANCE that he for sure could've been at the place that was on fire and she didn't know if he was there or not. Any normal spouse/family member/friend/etc would want to reach you and make sure you are okay. He needs to be mad at his job for writing him up over nothing, not his wife.

This is why therapy needs to be destigmatized--shes actually showing some signs of trauma, internalizing and romanticizing things and is still mentally stuck at the break up. UPDATE ON BO: Bo posted his own version of events on Reddit. Bo’s younger sister was pressuring him to catch up with OP for ‘closure’. For context, the younger sister used to look up to OP and considered her as an ‘older sister’. Bo’s wife saw every email as they were coming in and enjoyed reading them because OP sounded completely deranged. He blocked her eventually as she kept emailing him every couple of days.

Bonnets have origins in 17th century Europe where they were only worn by upper class women. They were LITERALLY a sign of being put together and dignified.

And he was an AH before he’d even told the story about the bonnet when he’s mentioning the amount of product she needs to spend to maintain her hair. I'm extremely glad you mentioned that you recognize his desire to learn, albeit it was after all of the inappropriate attitude he presented prior to that. I honestly learned a lot from the first story and have lived in the United States my entire life, but felt the three of them were part of the problem for ridiculing his desire to rectify the situation. If someone is choosing to be remorseful and learn, ridiculing their change will only discourage them from changing. I get he is being mocked for his verbage and that this is not new for Blacks living in America, but know that the mockery isn't productive.

Honestly, massive props to everyone with curly/textured hair. I've always thought curly hair was gorgeous, but I've also learned from my friends with those types of hair just how much work it takes to take care of and style it.
Nowadays, when I see someone's hair in braids, or dreads, wearing their hair natural, and/or has their edges laid in those little curls, I admire the style and the amount of work it took to get to that. The fact that laws like Crown Acts are still not across all 50 states and that POC (especially WOC) can be told that their hair in braids or worn naturally is "unprofessional", and yet I can be a regular wearer of the single ponytail or messy sock bun and no one comments on my hair smacks of hypocrisy.

They described almost my exact situation with my ex who broke up with me and kicked me out days before Christmas (minus the fact that I don’t have a kid). This was only a few months in. He’d get mad at me for sleeping in on my days off even though I have a very physically demanding job and rarely sleep, got mad that I hadn’t heard back from any of the better jobs I applied to even though I was trying, wanted me to work out at all hours of the night, expected sex all the time, would tell me I wasn’t motivated enough and say I was being dramatic or making excuses when he’d make me cry, and would pick me apart, but say he was just trying to better me and cared so much . I’ve been very depressed over the whole situation, but hearing basically the same situation being read out loud made me realize how much I dodged a bullet.

For the David story, I feel like if the sister was really worried, she would’ve gone to David himself, tell him what she’s heard about him and how that makes her feel about his relationship with her brother, because what she did will inevitably plant a seed of distrust in her brother
She would also write it a lot differently. It would be more like "I'm very worried about my brother's boyfriend. They've been together for 6months now, but I know he's slept with most of my friends, and there's rumours flying that he might have slept with most of the college and even some of the teachers. I slipped up and said that I thought my brother was just an experiment and it came out all wrong, and now I don't know how to help my brother so he isn't hurt by this guy. I hope he's genuine, but I can't get these rumours out of my head."
Or something along those lines.
Something to note about the last story: the guy casually brushes aside the fact that *coworkers died that day* like… this man has demonstrated a clear lack of a shit to give for the lives and wellbeing of other people, and then doubled down by yelling at his wife who was probably legit panicking because she thinks her husband is dead. She needs to divorce his uncaring ass
also he said that it "wasn't a real emergency"... the emergency is the *deadly fire at your workplace* that you couldve been in!!! he genuinely can't comprehend ppl (the wife) being worried about others (him)
I'm also shocked nobody mentioned the fact that he didn't ask if SHE was okay. Like, if I was them and my wife had called me 20 times and I had no idea why, I would be terrified that something had happened to her or our child
A third perspective, is how is the workplace even operational with its process of blocking employees from the outside world? I can understand needing to leave phones behind but him being written up for what obviously was an emergency in his wife's eyes is insane to me. How any employee or employer believes that his phone ringing in the locker is grounds for discipline does not live in the real world.
I feel like he could be working in a mine, then it would make sense that he has to leave his stuff above ground in a locker, but that's just a guess

The last story: why TF did the site manager not gather all the employees and inform them of the fire, and give them a moment to contact their families to let them know they're okay. Like people, who probably were their coworkers, died. Shouldn't management inform their staff when something so devastating is happening?!

It seems likely that this is something government related, dealing with classified stuff, or maybe something where the signals can cause interference with the work itself. Still, the site manager should *absolutely* have told them what happened and allowed them to tell their families they were safe, and yelling at her for being worried was totally out of line.

The craziest part about the first story is, if theres one place it is so acceptable to wear your hair covered in whichever way you choose its a beauty supply store or a sally beauty! They know why youre there and what youre doing working on your hair, you could walk into one in a shower cap or curlers theyd know youre in the middle of doing it and needed more supplies

The first story reminds me of the Reddit from a year or two ago. Where the white boyfriend didn’t understand why his girlfriend used a special towel for her hair. They went to visit his family and he was embarrassed by her “special hair towel” and removed it from her suitcase before they left. He admitted it to her after they arrived and she pasted a smile on her face for the visit. Then dumped him when they got home and he couldn’t figure out why.

Funny story,
I knew a couple that had their first date at a mortuary. He worked there and took her there to hang out. They are married, have 11 kids, and I found them to be insufferable 😂😅
A bonnet is great for curly hair.
As a man with curly hair it gets frizzy and dry from pillow covers, towels etc. bonnets help retain moisture and shape. A cap is a completely different fabric and surrounds the head giving no room for the hair
I’m not a person of color I’m a white girl with crazy curly hair, let’s just say I really respect People of color and what they go through with their hair. I was struggling to keep my curls from frizzing when I wanted to wear them the next day and a friend of mine actually suggested a bonnet at night. Honestly it’s been super helpful. I think the boyfriend is such an jerk, clearly he is living in his own bubble. I grew up in a small town with lack of diversity and even I know of the struggles people of color especially woman experience. It honestly pisses me off that I as a white girl can leave my house and have a bit of friz to my curls and nobody says anything but if a black woman did so she’d get called out

This series has honestly really been helping me out. I have autism so I have a lot of trouble communicating what I'm feeling and why. Hearing people talk about the emotional side of life in an almost analytical way is genuinely very helpful. I've learned a lot! I understand my feelings a lot more now. It's made me feel so much more confident.

That last story was wild, especially because OP didn't indicate that his wife calling him when she isn't supposed to is a pattern of behavior or something. The fact that she always follows the rule but went crazy that day indicates that there's something legitimately serious going on. I'm surprised that his first reaction was anger when seeing the missed calls rather than confusion or fear.
Because I might get it if it was a boy who cried wolf situation. I have family members who think I've been struck by lightning or eaten by a pack of wild hyenas the moment I step out of the house and will blow up my phone for basically any reason. So it's hard to know when their calls are actually meaningful.

The OP in my brother is an "experiment" story honestly sounds super biphobic. Like what does she mean "experiment" she said that David has already experimented and realized that he does like guys and girls. Then she seems to fully believe the stereotype that bi/pan people are just inherently cheaters. Not to mention the elitism with the birthday gift. She just gives me so much ick ugh. The man mad at his wife for calling and being worried for him really irritated me. My dad works at an oil refinery. It's an incredibly dangerous job, he's gotten injured and they recently had a bad explosion that injured multiple of his coworkers and almost killed one. They have fires and dangerous situations multiple times a year, but he ALWAYS finds time to at least shoot a quick text to my mom to let her know he's okay. We also have two main office numbers to call in the case of an emergency. If he knew there was a fire, he should have briefly excused himself to at least text her. She was understandably scared. There's no excuse for his actions OR for the actions of his supervisors.
He didn't know there was a fire, at all. The fire happened at Site B, which could be miles away or in a different city even. All he saw was that he has 20 missed calls from his wife, to which his frustration is understandable... "You thought I was dying, yet all you did was call my phone 20 times? You didn't call the office? You didn't come down here? You just sat in the living room at home and watched the news and called over and over again?" What if he was in trouble? He's not going to answer his phone if he's on his way to the freaking hospital, or worse. His wife's attempts at calming her nerves was immature, untrustworthy, and frankly inappropriate. I would have lost a lot of respect for my spouse if she treated me that way.

What is "reasonable" is remembering how phones work and calling a few times spaced throughout a short period, sending a text or two, or leaving a voicemail. Every single time she calls she makes a notification that she called, it has no impact on wether or not he picks up, especially since she knows he doesn't have his phone and knows he keeps it on silent mode. What's "reasonable" is being very worried, calling, looking for another way to get a hold of him, and trying to remember that he doesn't keep his phone on him. What's NOT reasonable is calling over and over and over and over and over and over like somehow he is going to pick up on the 12th call if he doesn't answer the 11th, or the 20th call if he doesn't answer the 19th. In reality, if he doesn't answer the 5th call, he's not answering the 50th.

Meh dude didn't give her an alternate number. Just said "She can look up the company name on Google and call the listed number. Eventually that person will get the message to me."
If he didn't want his phone blown up, he should have given her a local "In case of emergency " office number. It may be insanity to do the same thing repeatedly and expect different results, but the only option he gave her was to Google a corporate number and call for information that might take hours to arrive (or if he was in trouble days).
Worrying with no relief drives you to more unreasonable actions as time goes on. Is he more likely to answer the 5th call than the 4th? No. But not being able to get news on his condition makes that less likely to matter in her decision making. What she did WAS unreasonable, but only because reason goes out the window when you fear a loved one might be dead.
Moreover that office number was absolutely flooded with calls from the families of people who did regularly work at the second site. She WASN'T going to get through to the office for hours. Calling her husband's phone repeatedly was probably MORE likely to get a response than a corporate office dealing with media, authorities, and family during a major casualty event ever would be.
Tl;dr way to tell us you are a socially inept, inconsiderate a**hole, without telling us you are a socially inept, inconsiderate a**hole.
